Day 1 at Kumbh Mela is known as Shaahi Snaan (The Royal Bath). Folks across the country (this year around 2 Cr.) take a dip into the Ganga to get rid of all the sins. Well, according to me one can get rid of all the sins by taking a dip in Ganga at any time of the year. So why 2 Cr. out of 133.92 Cr. Indians come with all their heart and soul to submerge themselves into the Ganga? Let me start with the name itself. Kumbh means a pot. So as per the Indian mythology several several years ago all the Gods lost their strength. So they negotiated with the devils to churn the primordial ocean of milk for the immortality nectar. This was to be equally shared amongst them. Devils thought why must Gods have all the fun all the time, so a tiff took place between the them which went on for 12 human years. During the battle a celestial bird named Garuda flew away with the Kumbh containing the nectar. During the flight the drops of immortality nectar is said to have fallen in the places where Kumbh Mela is now held - Allahabad, Haridwar, Nasik, Ujjain. Hence, the humans now are taking a dip to brim into the immortality nectar diluted in the Ganga. Irony is few years back we humans had littered Ganga to the extent that even the mortal living beings inside Ganga had died. And we’re now dipping our selfish flesh to attain immortality and wash off all the sins.
