A handy navigational aid as we steer a course through the stormy seas of social media...
News from the US that Nielsen's rival comScore is tracking digital viewing across multiple devices. This quote says it all:
“The question that I get every single day is: ‘Where have all the viewers gone?’ “ Mr. Wurtzel said. “The reality is, they really haven’t gone anywhere. They’re simply consuming video content differently.”

What was that about? Denis Welch explains what really happened in Hobbitgate
In last week's lecture on production I mentioned the Hobbit industrial dispute, but didn't go into a lot of detail because it's a fairly complex issue that we didn't have time to explore adequately.
'Hobbitgate' is still very much with us. The issue re-surfaced last year when Kim Dotcom released an email purporting to show Warner Bros leveraging the Hobbit deal to secure the extradition of Dotcom to the United States.
Here are a few links if you'd like to find out more:

"Hobbit jobs row buried four years on", NZ Herald, 22 Aug, 2014
"Dot com email is a fake - Warner Bros", NZ Herald, 15 Sept, 2014

Once a rarely used key on the typewriter, the graceful character has become the very symbol of modern electronic communication
Here's a slightly tangential footnote to Wednesday's lecture on Media Texts.
I talked about fashion as a medium in our first lecture. Here's a blog that explores this very topic! There are some very interesting posts here.
Glenn Williams, Cate Owen, and Vaughn Davis discuss what technology media will take advantage of, and be pushed into in 2015.
I enjoyed this discussion on media technologies in 2015 on Radio NZ last weekend. Well worth a listen!
A class-action settlement intended to ensure that Facebook obtained consent before using people âas images or other data in ads is about to receive another legal challenge.
"It's one of the ironies of our branded age, that unbranded space. Public space, or pseudo-public space, is now a luxury item that is only really available to the very rich. Once you move up the class hierarchy, things get a lot more tranquil and quiet, and you sort of pay not to be marketed to. HBO is the same in a way. You pay extra not to be advertised to. Bahamas bans McDonald's. When rich people get together, they want to be protected from the brands that they got rich creating."
