I think that the only way Rukia marrying Renji makes any sense is as a way to maintain a plausibly deniable buffer in between her and Byakuya in an erotic context.
I think that Renji is more her brother than Byakuya ever was, having known each other since childhood, and that she is desperate for everything Byakuya has to offer, his attention, affection, commitment, and yes his sexual desire. The problems with that are 1) he is pining for the sister who abandoned her and died and will never tell her this out of fucked up obligation and 2) this fucked up sense of obligation has led him to introduce himself in to her life via the medium of adult adoption. Neither of these problems preclude Byakuya wanting Rukia badly, which is also obvious, just complicate it significantly.
To square this circle, enter Renji. Byakuya has an interesting relationship with Renji, as anyone who has noticed the relatively strong shipping community for them has noticed. Byakuya could find in him a person who isn't so deeply tied in to his dead wife trauma to connect with, if not for the fact they are basically both brother (one in name one in connection) to her more competent mini-me. I don't think it would be a romance for the ages personally, but I also don't think that invalidates the potential for real human connection there.
That all being said, I think from day dot Renji has always been willing to go as far as Rukia would have him if there had ever been any hint of a possibility there. I also think he would give himself over to Byakuya in his entirety just so Byakuya would know he isn't alone. Renji is giving in that way.
So here we hit on the dynamic I am interested in: Byakuya has a moment of weakness or realization depending on how you frame it and reaches out, breaches the divide between him and Renji just a bit. Rukia smells intimacy (emotional, physical, both) with Byakuya like blood in the water and starts something with Renji, to punish him for having what she has been denied, to feel closer to Byakuya by proxy, and to eventually make her move on Byakuya by adding herself to the Byakuya/Renji dynamic.
This is incredibly destabilizing to Byakuya but is rationalized by saying that he's not really doing anything with her, just letting her see him with Renji, just seeing her with him, just happening to be getting a hand job while she sucks Renji off. It doesn't count if he doesn't touch this woman who desperately wants him and looks like his dead wife and holds his heart on a string. It doesn't count unless he is fully inside her at least. Then it clearly doesn't count unless he is in her specifically vaginally, loophole of all time that one. But fucking her literally through another man does not count, obviously.
Renji is getting pulled from all sides too, Rukia who he can now at least admit to himself has been the master of his heart since childhood (I note the ageing differential for the world of the living residents vs soul society, ten to one, this is a hundred year old flame at the least) but she is not tender and is deliberately inconsiderate with him, first as explicit punishment then as a kind of shield/pecking order maintenance/extension of their existing dynamic/turns out it's pretty fun in the new context. And Byakuya is his literal boss, but he's also very hurt and very human under it all.
Rukia gets to treat Renji like a squeaky toy and finally have Byakuya, yeah not all to herself and yeah not without limitations, but it's insanely better than before.
But, well, the soul society definitely has some societal bounds, and Byakuya adopted her in to the center of one of its most prestigious families. But living all together wouldn't look so bad with just one little step more, one little to do and suddenly it all looks above outside reproach. Who would question her living at the family home with the man who just married in, who would whisper about it with her husband right there, who would suspect a man and his brother in law. She could even have kids, perfectly respectable genuinely not at all Byakuya's kids. But he'd still be head of the house of course and there's no reason to deny them time with their only uncle.
The advent of frozen hash browns on my life will have effects strong enough to be noticed by future archaeologists analysing my bones. I thinks trans people will do just fine.
IME one of the worst aspects of this site is genuinely the infinite petty feuds. I understand this place is PVP enabled, I get that whatever slights people are talking about are very real and salient to them, but I am not nor am I ever going to give a shit about most of these grievances.
On the one hand I kind of want 9pm pancakes but on the other hand the kitchen is so cold...
Nothing will warm the kitchen up quite like running the stove to make 9pm pancakes
Yeah but then I'll eat too many (it's hard to proportion one person's worth of snack pancakes) and feel all dense and weird inside for the rest of the night.
Pancake refrigerate surprisingly well. You can cook too many and eat only enough.
I'm just air frying some sausages instead. This means I can leave the kitchen while they cook and I don't have to go for a walk in the dark and wet to pick a lemon from the orchard.
Why would you need a lemon to make pancakes?
Gotta put something on the pancakes. I'm not gonna eat a plain dry pancake.
...but lemon?
Yeah lemon juice and sugar
i see you are experiencing the incomprehensible bluescreen some people have when informed of the Literal Best Pancake Topping Ever (my latvian friend had literally never heard of this before coming to ireland and for like 2 days around pancake tuesday was like "y'all are so fucking weird what even is this combo" about it being the default and beloved configuration here)
It's such a good combo that Americans make a whole drink out of it and people don't understand it on pancakes? It's like, THE classic pancake topping second only to maple syrup (which is way too sweet for me).
Iâve never heard of this, but it sounds incredible. Do you mix the sugar in with the lemon juice before pouring it on? Is it a lemon juice and powdered sugar on top situation? If youâre mixing the sugar and lemon juice before pouring on, is it enough sugar to make it thick like syrup, or is the texture closer to lemonade (American style like you referenced rather than the soda)?
I squeeze a wedge of lemon over the pancake like you do with chips and then sprinkle on a bit of sugar to take the edge off the sourness of the lemon. You can butter them first or not depending on moisture preference and how much you want the lemon to soak in.
Is this the time to share that I grate cheddar cheese into my pancake mix?
It is never the time to share such horrifying truths
Wait. Back up. What do you mean, "like you do with chips"?!
It's what the lemon is for. You squeeze if over the fish and chips. Or if you're like me and don't like fish, just the chips.
#yank alert#they probs thought you meant Crisps
Confusingly, we also call those chips
also the sugar is commonly icing sugar so it sprinkles properly but I suspect Derinâs using table sugar.
Do I seem like the sort of person whose life is together enough to own more than one type of sugar
YOU ARE A PUBLISHED AUTHOR. that seems like the kinda person to own more than one type of sugar????????
Writers are not known for high incomes or for generally having our lives together.
"But what about -- " whoever you are thinking of is Spiders Georg. We're disasters, as a group.
I generally have multiple types of sugar and am technically a published author, but I'm also not trying to make a living off the writing, as one can't do that with short stories anymore.
It doesn't make me any less of a disaster, though; I'm just the type of disaster who owns more than 100 cookbooks.
I own one type of sugar, a coffee grinder, and a jar of molasses. So I can make most types of sugar as needed if I happen to be bothered. Which I usually don't.
If a recipe wants raw sugar it can get fucked.
why is the coffee grinder involved here. do you grind molasses to make brown sugar. is that how? inch er esting.
Molasses is a liquid. You grind plain sugar to make caster sugar.
Are we just not gonna talk abt the cheddar cheese pancakes?
Correct, we're gonna gloss right on past.
I love how you call high-income writers Spiders Georg instead of. you know. an outlier.
As a writer, I know my audience.
#australia really did get the worst of all worlds on the fries chips chips crisps front#not fries and chips or chips and crsips. chips and chips đ#RIP
Sometimes we differentiate by calling one of them 'potato chips', but they are both made of potato, so
So is there one kind of chips that is more commonly refered to as "potato chips"? Which one is potato chips? My guess would be "fries"-chips, because "crisps"-chips are not necessarily made of potatoes.
I hate to say this but unfortunately you guessed wrong
The fries kind are sometimes called hot chips though, which means that I used to interpret "eat hot chip and lie" very incorrectly.
Wait, it's not about eating hot chips but about spicy crisps? That's insane and way less appealing a lifestyle.

I really love how the Funny Halflife Machinima Guy has become such a dedicated and important advocate for consumer rights making real strides against predatory business practices. Wouldn't have seen that coming a decade and a half ago.
Sometimes you make some funny half-life videos for a comedy website and then you start reviewing old games to fill in the gas between episodes and trying to find some of the games gets you really into game preservation and really mad about scammy live service models and then you're suddenly being asked to come and speak at EU parliament (you are not European)
Come on, fellas. Let's get it together.
Itâs incredible how much women do behind the scenes. I know a realtor who relies strongly on his girlfriendâs charisma, beauty and personality to gain clients.
Iâve just been reading The Glass Universe by Dava Sobel, about the Harvard women who supported the bulk of astronomy research there over the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While many of them did receive public and academic credit as well as pay - although the university always resisted making any of them faculty until the 1950s - almost all the male astronomers featured were married to accomplished women in their own right, many of them scientists, and you can bet their husbands werenât putting them on all their papers.Â
Which has bled into the modern academic world, where many people are expected to do what was essentially a two-person job (filled by male academic + wife) by themselves, or while married to someone else trying to do the same thing. The lack of acknowledgement of womenâs work fucks everybody over.Â
#people who want a return to the mythical prior era #when women did not work #do not want women to stop working #they want them to stop getting credit and pay for it
This reminds me of how early film history, it was always the male directorâs wife who did the editing of the films, because the cutting and connecting of film strips was considered a lot like sewing. Of course, anyone who knows anything about film and editing can tell you it changes how good a movie is very easily.
Donât believe me? Look at the differences between the famous Jaws as the publicâs release of it (insisted upon by the female editor) and spielberg, the male directorâs version of it (missing basic suspense methods, shows the phony shark too much, etc). Same goes for almost every tarantino film. Editing makes or breaks a film and even today, you can bet your socks editing âthe invisible artâ was pioneered and is still pushed by women.
^^^^^^ This is so true! And once film editing began to be recognized as an actual art form, women were shoved out of the editing room so that men could be artistic or whatever.
Also Tarantino referred to his favorite editor as being kind of like his mom or something and I swear to god the more I see of him, the less I like him.
The âfemale editorâ for Jaws was Verna Hellman Fields, who cut many other notable films, including American Graffiti along with Marcia Lucas.
Tarantinoâs âfavorite editorâ was Sally JoAnne Menke who edited all of Tarantinoâs films until she died.
Because naming and credit is important, especially when youâre talking about women not getting credit and recognition of their work as named individuals.
If you want to know more about women in early filmmaking (emphasis American) and the sociology of how different roles were divided, gendered, and re-gendered in the first decades, I highly recommend Women Filmmakers in Early Hollywood by Karen Ward Mahar. Â
There are a number of other books to follow that, but itâs 2am and Iâm tired so hit me up later for them.
You know what happens when women type? They EDIT. It is a service they are expected to provide invisibly - not to let a mistake or imperfection show to their husbandâs audience, but also not to intrude upon his sense that this is all his ideas and his labor. Wives are the unacknowledged story and script doctors, and often co-authors for so many supposedly male-authored works.
Also, I second Women Filmmakers in Early Hollywood. Mahar was my history prof for three or four courses and she is incredibly knowledgeable and engaging.Â
Considering making a graph o how fucked up I expect each treegrave story to be so that the discord can have fun witnessing how wrong I am
Not even gonna try to rank how long I think each one will be, I know my limitations.
Here it is. The chart.
I support author's rights to get fucked up with it for real. Genuinely hell yeah.
