What an incredible show at the Whitney! I could hear the bass and trumpet playing in these pictures, all filled with Jazz and Swing - almost like I was in the studio with Stuart Davis when he was making these. Great to see this work finally in real life!! Luc Tuymans, Untitled (Still Life), 2002. From the Pinault Collection. Seen at Unfinished, 2016, Met Breuer, New York. "The ostensibly banal depiction of a jug and fruit was inspired by the tragic, extraordinary events of 9/11, which Tuymans witnessed. The work was first shown at an especially polemical iteration of the international exhibition Documenta in 2002. There it defied expectations, rejecting the demand for social commentary and refusing to represent what Tuymans believed was unrepresentable. The work was inspired by an unfinished still life of Cézanne.
