Fred Mitchell, “To Be Alive,” 1962. Mitchell was an integral part of the Downtown scene in the 50s and 60s. His work appeared in the seminal Guggenheim Museum exhibition “Younger American Painters” in 1954. This was the first museum show to treat the subject of abstraction and effectively launched his career to a new level.
