Matthew’s impulsive, romantic and creative personality reminds him of himself.

Let’s face it, who would have been more likely to make the choice Philippe did regarding Ysabeau? She had the blood rage (a carrier), he SHOULD have killed her, he didn’t. If they were in the same situation, who would choose to disregard their duty in the name of love?

I’ve translated a couple of erotic novels (the kind where the male lead, who has some kind of violent profession, gets entangled in a boderline abusive relationship with the meek heroine), and I’ve noticed a recurring trope in those: at one point the heroine (who is also the narrator of the story to help the reader to identify with her) is presented with some expensive gift (usually designer clothes), and her immediate reaction is self-deprication and denial of the gift–of going down the road of “it’s too much, I don’t deserve this, you are actually placing me in awkward spot by giving this to me.”

This is, I believe, because two opposing forces clash here: the internal desire of the character/reader to be pampered and spoiled, and the external conditioning that tells women that of they accept gifts then they are gold diggers, hoes, etc. If you are eager to accept gifts then you are not demure and submissive, ergo you are a “good woman.”

There is nothing Matthew could ever want materially that he couldn’t easily buy for himself (he’ll have the most up to date computer and car but still use a one-hundred-year-old fountain pen). What he doesn’t have is magic.

I set it up to keep spoilers from those who don’t want to know any. It’s really important to me that things are not spoiled for fellow fans whilst allowing a scream vent for those who have seen it all.

Again, nothing will be posted on this blog that hasn’t already been aired according to US airdate. It sucks that other fans have been left behind by the airing schedule, especially our Australian brethren, who won’t get new episodes until Wednesday. I will tag ‘adows2spoilers’ when I post anything S2 related until such a time as we are all mostly caught up.

Things have sucked generally but we can still look out for one another! If content creators tag spoilers and followers blacklist spoiler tags we will get through this.

I adore this community and how we share Deb’s world of All Souls, the art, vids, gifs, fics, opinions and hottest takes, all of that minus fandom drama.
