Melissa McCarthy got snubbed on Oscar’s night. And we’re not just talking about her award. In a new interview with Redbook magazine, the actress revealed that the perils of being a “big” big star are even worse than imagined. “Two Oscars ago, I couldn’t find anybody to do a dress for me,” #McCarthy said. “I asked five or six #designers—very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people—and they all said no.” Despite the fact that McCarthy is a wildly brilliant #actress and possesses such humor and talent that she has scored countless award wins and nominations, her weight has consistently been a target of both discussion and criticism—almost more so than her success. In 2013, The New York Observer’s Rex Reed even went so far as to call the actress “tractor-sized” and “a hippo.” “I don’t understand why if you’re a certain size, designers think your taste level goes down and you have less money to spend,” McCarthy said in Redbook, targeting today’s seemingly unprogressive fashion industry. “The quality and construction is often so bad. Finding a great T-shirt or a great cigarette pant in a good fabric is next to impossible. Plus-size clothes are often really cheap and either look young or incredibly old.” Unfortunately, we live in a “very size-phobic, sexist, racist, ageist fashion world,” Cameron Silver, longtime fashion historian and founder of West Hollywood vintage couture boutique, Decades, told The Daily Beast. Silver, who styled McCarthy for the 2012 Academy Awards in a light-pink Marina Rinaldi gown (a designer who specializes in women sizes 10-22), said that working with a plus-size actress, particularly one of McCarthy’s caliber, was a “non-issue.” “How brilliant would it be if Karl Lagerfeld made a dress for Melissa and she looked incredible?” he said. “What kind of spectacular statement and moment would that make? It’s not like Chanel would be pigeonholed as a plus-size designer. It would just show insight and talent. It’s not hard to make Karlie Kloss look good, but someone who we might see as having more obstacles to look glamorous—which is all in the eye of the beholder—to elevate their confidence and beauty is a really rewarding thing.

#Fashion is an industry that, despite it's seemingly symbiotic relationship with #queerness — in that the fashion world is full of queer designers, models, stylists, etc. — upholds binary notions of gender as rigorously as the most conservative industries. Clothes are for men or for women, and in some very rare (but exceedingly more common) cases they are unisex. But in 2016, a year in which we've seen transgender #models trample over societal ideals of the "perfect" body, shouldn't we be past the gendering of the rags, however beautiful, we put on our body? This past March, #Zara launched their first genderless clothing line, and the results were more than a bit "meh," largely seen as shapeless jeans and sweatshirts designed to hang limply from whatever body might want to fork over the cash for them. To Zara, their idea of genderless fashion was fashion with no identity, which is exactly what fashion isn't. #Clothing is one of the loudest ways we can proclaim who we are to the world, and Zara really took the "less" in genderless to heart. Thankfully, #brands like #TillyandWilliam are aiming to approach fashion from a perspective of gender fluidity. The brand, created by friends Tilly deWolfe and Tom Barranca in 2009, has become a hallmark of NYC more enlightened, fashionable gender deviants, those whose clothing celebrates their mercurial natures.

Jeremy Scott and Devon Aoki go way back. “I basically saw a photo of her when she barely started modeling at 13 and I was just mesmerized,” Scott said of Aoki, now 33. “I fought and fought to get her into #Paris to do my third show and that was her first fashion show ever.” Scott said he’s been nudging Aoki back onto the modeling scene, although “she may be a little reluctant.” Last month, he cast her to close his #Moschino resort and men’s spring 2017 show in Los Angeles, and now she’s appearing in the fall campaign for Scott’s own label, photographed by the designer himself. This marks the first time Scott has shot his own ads, although he has photographed Aoki before. Specifically, his nostalgia for the i-D cover for which he shot her in July 2007 for the 10th anniversary of his collection sparked their photographer/subject reunion. Photographed in the designer’s L.A. studio, with hair by Chris Appleton and makeup by #Kabuki, one ad features Aoki cast in the purple light of a neon Jeremy Scott sign. She’s wearing a trench decorated with pink landline telephones and holding a tote emblazoned with the words “Hot Line.” In another, Aoki is posed on the side of a couch that looks like the tail of a Fifties car. “There wasn’t a really big plan,” said Scott of the concept.”I just grabbed all the clothes and we were just kind of playing.” The campaign will run in fall issues of V, i-D, Purple, Another and The Daily magazines. Aoki isn’t completely retired but her modeling gigs are rare. Her last campaign was for Kenzo in spring 2014. She and her husband James Bailey have three children, and Scott is godfather to their eldest daughter. In addition to appearing in Scott’s campaign and the Moschino resort show, Aoki was also cast in Fergie’s ““M.I.L.F. $” video, which dropped last week. In this case, Fergie changed the acronym of M.I.L.F. to stand for “Moms I’d Like to Follow,” exemplified in the video by #Aoki, #Fergie, #KimKardashian, Chrissy Teigen, Ciara, Alessandra Ambrosio, Gemma Ward, Tara Lynn, Angela Lindvall, Isabeli Fontana, Amber Valletta and Natasha Poly, all neighbors in “#Milfville.”
