Due to joining this group late as a second Analytical means that the way I perseave the data may be a bit different from the first Analytical of the group. But I will try the best I can to make sence of the Data given and collected by my  team mates.

Full warning I have refrain from reading any blog posts by the other Analytical group member to try and keep my self from copying his way of viewing the data and so this will be my interpretation of the Project as a whole. Also I should worn you that I’m pretty much completely confused with this project and so the way I do thing may be completely off the requested way of doing things. So yeah there's that to worry about. But I will try to do the best I can with a very confused outlook on the project.

I would have done more individual blog post similar to the other analytical person but my hands have been rather full with other assessments and things that where beyond my control.

Now that that’s out of the way lets get done to some analyses.

By comparing the information gathered by both qualitative and quantitative members I am able to see similarities in the information about what exactly instinct is. But through completely different means. Quantitative stated with a dictionary meaning while qualitative as per its nature went for a more personal approach and also asked individuals there thoughts on the mater. 2 very different was of finding information and although there data may seem different to some. There findings are actually very similar when you get down to it.

Both come to the same conclusion through there data of what instincts are but it doesn't stop there. 

To go a bit of topic but still staying on it. When you get done to it quantitative thinking actual sort of originated from qualitative thinking. All facts and theories started of as hunches and gut feeling. For crying out loud Newton was seen as a madman because his beliefs on how the world worked clashed with the norm.

So when you get down to it both quantitative and qualitative are two side of the same coin. the rational and the irrational kind of like instinct and how science can try ad rationalist it but there are always those things that contradict our theories. And this is where I start to talk about the theory behind all this. though I goes I already stated a bit early. Oops.

Theoretical group member dove deeper into the theory and origin of the term instinct I’m not going into too much detail about his findings because I don’t want to repeat what he has already stated. but I will analyse the theory behind it. 

Theoretical started going into a debate about what contributes as an instinct. This is due to that fact that he starts to describe people that where able to unlearn instincts and learn new ones. this is a sort of contradiction to what qualitative and quantitative came up with as in an instinct is something that is sort of hard codded into our genetic make up and so shouldn’t be able to be unlearnt or can they. You see instincts are to my understanding from the data gathered, things that our ansesters developed through stages in our evolution to better adapt and survive as a species. so what these people that are able to unlearn instincts is in fact a sort of next stage to our evolution as a species and so are in fact the perfect examples of human instinct due to the fact that they show that instinct can be sharpened and honed to a razzer tip and so are better suited for survival. This could very well be the next step in the evolution of human nature and instinct.

Theoretical also goes onto explain how a mothers caring for her children and putting them above herself being instinct is a contradiction to self survival, but then goes on to justify this as the mother subconsciously seeing the child as part of there own body and thus needed be protected for self preservation. And hes right in this respect and this connects with the quantitative findings on instincts being how we survive as a species for if the next generation dies out then we will go extinct.

Now this leaves us with the final member of the group the practice member.Now to be completely honest I dint find it very clear what he was supposed to do due to as I was reading his first blog post I found that hes was being more analytical than practical and that's my job! Then he went onto write a poem. ok not shore how this relates to our work but it might have bean explained in a meeting that I dint know was happening because I was exorbed in my DIY project so sorry about that. 

Now I always sucked at comprehension study when it came to poems. (O great I'm getting ptsd flashbacks already OK breath Jackson just breath everything will be OK). but from what I could gather from the poem and his description of it which I found a bit vague I seams to come off as a sort of story about how instincts are applied to in today's society not quite shore what a poem has to do with practicality but the message about controlling your instincts but not getting rid of them because you need them for survival I thought was brought forth well in the poem. and it did a good job in describing the natural evolution of a person. though being atheist I did feel a little uncomfortable about the religion mention at the end but to each there own.

In this blog, I will be analysing the conclusions made by red, green and yellow, respectively. I will be comparing their given view points against each other to deduce which points are valid and conclude on a final point of view.

Firstly, I’ll be addressing the meaning of human instincts and background information about it. Red defines instinct as “an inborn pattern of activity or tendency to action; common to a given biological species” (2015). Green’s survey also says that it is a quality that humans are born with (Yu, 2015). Yellow, on the other hand, brings up an interesting theory that instinct is something that must be unlearned (Sincero, 2012). Taking this into account, how can we have instincts the moment we’re born if to gain instincts we must first unlearn knowledge? Unless we are born with a number of pre-set instincts and to gain more, we must unlearn knowledge that we've gained. It could also be that “unlearn” is the wrong term. Rather than unlearning a knowledge, it’s about learning it to the point that it becomes reflexive. This makes sense, referring to Yellow’s example of martial artists where they train for a long periods of time to ingrain the skills they have learnt till it is reflexive (Chand, 2015). With this analysis, it’s valid to say that humans come with a predetermined amount of instinctive qualities but it is inconclusive where these qualities are stored or come from. It is also possible to gain more instincts by learning it to an in-depth level that the knowledge becomes reflexive.

Red, then brings up the theory that human instinct is dependent on the person and so different people would have different instincts (Kleinos, 2015). Yellow then talks about how parent and child alike gain instincts from each other. Because Red did not explicitly say that it depends only on the person, it’s valid to say that the experience that people undergo nurtures and shapes the instincts that they have. This is apparent when you compare a writer against a painter when you ask them to express themselves. Each one would instinctively choose their own field to express themselves because that’s what they've been exposed to.

Lastly, in one of Red’s conclusions, he said that people can be manipulated by knowing their instincts (Kleinos, 2015). This is supported by the example of martial artists, brought up by Yellow. In knowing how people would act in a fight, martial artists are able to react to their actions and defend themselves. This concept can be further explored with the idea of blackmail. Most blackmails are successful due to people exploiting others’ reactions to certain situations such as revealing secrets or protecting their family. The victims would instinctively opt to be blackmailed because their instincts tell them that those secrets must not be released or a protective instinct. It is, therefore, valid to say that people can be manipulated by knowing how they would instinctively act in certain situations.

To conclude, looking at the topics that at least two of the group members looked at, I was able to analyse and validate some statements. These statements are:

We are born with instincts

We gain instincts through extensive learning

Instincts gained differ from person to person due to experience

Manipulating people can be done through knowing the victim’s instincts.

Collectively made by the Mark’s group

Throughout his life, Marks suffered from Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). But, One day he became curious of his human instincts. He always knew that he had them, yet at the same time he knew nothing about them. As a result, Marks set out on a quest to solve this mystery. Throughout the process, he realised that we’re multiple different ways of gaining this knowledge; which resulted in each of his personalities taking on specific role.

We as the independent personalities, aim to achieve a deeper understanding of human Instincts. By investigating the matter with Qualitative, Quantitative, Theoretical, Practical and Analytical approaches; from a multidisciplinary perspective. Ideally, we intend to play our respective roles and remain within our assigned stereotypes. This will be important in our individual research techniques and presentation of information on our blog. Whereby, using factual information from articles and journals will be more suitable for the Quantitative personality. While, on the other side of the spectrum; the Qualitative personality will depend more on their own emotions and that of others to develop their understanding. Our Theoretical personality, will look at the meta-meaning on theories that surround Human Instincts; he will need to depend on discussions over experience. However, the Practical personality will reflect more on experiences they had throughout their active approach to knowledge. Finally, Our Analytical personality will analyse the compiled information and draw relevant conclusions. Hence, we tackling the same issue; but with entirely different approaches.

Throughout the process, we will each explore and reflect on our respective roles; while having no knowledge on our final artifact. We will continuously, discuss our findings and share our thoughts on human instinct. Where, we hope to know what instincts are, how they work, and why we have them. While simultaneously, develop an artifact that reflects the knowledge gained. Overall, we hope that the final outcome will give us an understanding on the dogmas of knowledge and solving problems that stem within this endless disciplinary.

In this short thinking topic I would like to measure data and compare Quantitive and Qualitive type of people. Try to imagine our world without science and progress. Knowing artists I guess we should stuck somewhere between Stone Age and cave drawing. Undoubtedly all art deserves a place in the world but only if you are tired and you need to give a rest for your brain and read another non scientific book about some feeling. Every scientist in the world know that workaholism can slow down your important research in this world full of scientific secrets and puzzles which noone have never solve yet. And only here appears an art and design to appeal your clever mind and with the renew strongness get to work.

Alright I’m a Quantitive person can understand as I mentioned in first paragraph that only purpose of art is relaxation after hard work. But there is no logical explanation why the hell appear this modern art where artist drawing like a two years old baby or even eat paint and than puke into the canvas or even worse example which homo sapiens (Latin: “wise person”) will have never even mentioned in the rational society.

Finally the most important part where you will understand why I started to talk about qualitative. Let me ask you a direct question what art related people do you know about instincts except that “I feel fear that’s why I'm running”? Human body is strong complex system which contain itself millions microorganism which are working together like an ants or bees. How do you artist can even live with this and don’t care about scientific progress? It remind me wild animals which can hear only their instincts but being human it means being an explorer and try to conquer new spaces.

I know its weird its supposed to be about instincts and someones experiences of the different perceptions of instincts - biologically integrated, learnt, controllable/uncontrollable etc... anyway yet to be continued and context changes throughout the poem from survival - civilized daily life where instincts exist.

Instincts

Sweat, pain, fear, we have yet to control,

Not one, not two or three but all of these reactions.

Do we seek control?

Or submit as a whole?

Listen to the gut I say, listen to the gut.

The thunder comes, I shiver, I hide, I run –

Cover my ears, the boom, clap, clap of the angry deity is followed by the tears of a goddess.

I’m drenched. A splash of sea spray sticks to my raw eyes, water-falls from them.

Uncontrollable.

 **

I’m starving, stomach rumbling in rage.

I hear a voice, it tells me

“Don’t give up,”

But I’m lost, I’m lonely – dispirited like god’s empty cup.

I hear rummaging through the bushes,

My eyes spin, my skin ripples with bumps.

I try to pace my breathing, so loud it dampens the sound around,

And it stares, it glares, red eyes like a pair of blood moons make me sweat.

I cannot help but feel myself give into adrenaline,

and before I know it i’m hit by a huge force.

But I forget the pain, what pain, no pain, I run.

I reach a sandy shore -the sun beaming in my eyes,

Hope I see, hope, but my gut tells me lies.

I can’t help but squint from the bright light,

It beams down as exhaustion gets to me,

Oh no more, no more, my body drifts to sea.

I wake up in a hospital my brain in a mix; my senses dull.

A figure in a white coat asks me - 

“Do you remember anything?”

But my mind is a mess a colorful blur

I don’t want to answer, I want to deter.

The truth...

My heart tells me yes,

my mind tells me no,

but it’s not right to lie,

isn’t that so?

It’s too late, I've lied

and as much as I didn’t want to

I know that my honesty has died.

That’s life away from society,

living in the wild, one lone child.

I taught myself, taught?

It came to me, the power,

the need, desperation, it got to me

and naturally, without thinking,

I became one with the tree,

nature and life.

10 years later, here I am.

A new being, a purpose in life,

something they call religion,

my soul as free as a pigeon,

Given the role of the ‘practical’ member of the group, there was quite a large responsibility in the sense of ‘making’ things. In group discussions there has been in particular a lot of emphasis towards other roles, however enjoying the ideas that were flowing within the discussions, I attempted to engage myself in the tasks. 

The biggest aspect that I consistently queried in my mind was “what are we making” and though I was desperate to know I guess it was equally important to understand the thought process that lead up to the decision. A few ideas prior to the current chosen idea of “’human instincts - poetry’ included installments to do with space, and even the idea of what is like to be first coming into the world from a babies perspective through Oculus Rift. Though I found the other ideas somewhat fascinating, thew new idea chosen by the group of initially ‘instincts’ was a topic that I felt I could discuss in depth. However mindful of my given role, I was careful not to go to far in discussion, instead take a step back and listen to what others had to say.

I made suggestions seeking clarifications, one being - what instincts are we looking at? And also of course with relevance to my role, how are we going to display instincts as an outcome/medium? The first ideas that sprung to mind after hearing the topic of instincts was animal instincts and human instincts. I was discussing the Kong the ideas under animal instincts and in fact how they tie in with human instincts at times. One aspect that we discussed in further depth was the idea of a ‘peeking order,’ the rankings - one of the most commonly talked about examples would be in a pack of wolves and how they have the Alpha followed by Beta, Delta etc. Though we as humans are civilized in nature due to the law and social expectations, there is still evidence of dominance and ways of differentiate class and status in a way of hierarchy. There also came the discussion of senses that somewhat are responsible for our instincts - touch, smell, sight and hearing and how the contribute to our instincts, essentially boosting what could be said as ‘skill of awareness and judgement.’

Thus the idea of instincts are much like Sujay and Marlow discussed. They had done some research into the idea of instincts finding crucial information that supported our understanding of the term. An example that was provided throughout their research was with regards to martial arts was ‘reflexes.’ Reflexes in the sense that it becomes instinctive without necessarily making the conscious thought process, thus the reaction is instantaneous rather than something where we consider and think about in depth before the point of reacting. The way I therefore perceive the term is skills that become one with us - essentially the information and knowledge infusing with a being to the point where it is second nature - like breathing. I think we will know when something is instinctive when there is the transition from consciousness -> subconsciousness. Sujay made a valuable point and a phrase to go with instincts - “instead of moving against the wave, moving with it” - showing that it is an intuitive process, the level of progression so advanced that before we think, it is there, because our instincts have hit. “Leaping before you Look.”

Furthermore as to why I see this as not only a great topic for discussion but of incredible importance is because instincts themselves are a large reason for our survival today. Instincts are what have guided us not only through survival but also with innovation. This is a matter that can be strongly related to as students of COLAB since we must rely on our gut feeling, the instinctive feelings that are formed from our experiences and knowledge. It is great to know the instincts will constantly evolve and grow as we encounter more problems or issues and progressing to the point where we do not have to ‘think’ about everything we do.

Moreover, there has also been discussion with regards to the downfall of purely relying on ‘instincts.’  Instincts we could say revolve more around the feelings and emotions and as results overrides processes of rationalization...

After reading and listening into discussions I have come to think that instincts should be balanced out by understandings to substantiate our actions, especially within the world today. The structures of society establish the reasons why we must control instincts - this said they are not something we can necessarily throw away and neither should they.

Yellow looked at the underlying meaning behind human instincts and the philosophy surrounding it (Chand, 2015).

Yellow brought up a proposal made by William McDougal, that an instinct must be unlearnt. He elaborates on how society has nurtured the behaviour of thinking about the consequences of our actions before doing them. This proposal suggests that instinct is when we have ignored this behaviour and act without thought. He relates it to how martial artists can react by reflex through training.

He continues, saying, “Technically, we are unlearning how to think before moving; as a result we develop an instinct.” (Chand, 2015).

This is a valid conclusion as he has provided an effective example with martial artists. Instinct is the act of reacting without thought but knowing how exactly to act. Also, he inadvertently concluded that instinct can be nurtured and taught. Therefore, instinct isn’t necessarily natural or embedded in our genes. It can rest within something else. That’s given that we can’t program or embed an act into our genes through experience.

Yellow proceeds by exploring if instinct is self-focused. He elaborates by using mothers’ natural instinct to protect their children as an example. He talks of how mothers’ see their children as an extension of themselves, so one’s instinct isn’t just reserved for one’s self. He also talks of how a child’s instinct is determined by the relationship they had with their parent(s). He didn’t make a conclusion but rather made statements. Relating it to his previous conclusion, because instinct can be nurtured then the statement that instinct isn’t self-focused can be true as it can be nurtured to be focused on other people.

Green looked into the idea of instinct through asking people about their opinions on it (Yu, 2015).

The majority says that instinct is natural and a few add that it’s embedded in our genes. They also go into saying about how you are born with it but it was inconclusive if it was changeable or not as it wasn’t well discussed. Given that the majority of the opinions says it’s natural, it is valid to conclude that instinct is viewed as natural. With that said, the conclusion of instinct being embedded in our gene is questionable as only 2/9 people mentions it.

“Instincts”, they are something we all have; yet struggle to truly grasp. The term was coined by Wilhem Wundt in the 1870s (Sincero, 2012), As time commenced, the concept was refined to suggest it was a human motivational force. However, by trying to understand the underlying concepts; confusions and debates arose. Matters became more mystifying when different types of instincts were realised; such as animal, natural reactions, street smarts and etc. But for our discussion, human instincts are the main focus. 

According to Robert C. Birney and Richard C. Teevan, the motivation of instincts are automatic, irresistible, triggered by environmental occurrences and do not require training (Sincero, 2012). This means that they primarily stem from nature; rather than nurture. However, many athletes and martial artists have managed to develop instincts through training; whereby they no longer need to think about actions before execution. Evidence, like these contradict certain claims made on the concept; due to motivation developing from training. On the other hand, William McDougal proposed that an instinct must be unlearnt, universal in a species and uniform in expression (Sincero, 2012). Referring to McDougal’s point on “an instinct must be unlearnt”, this implies that something is an instinct; if we manage to unlearn that action. Throughout life we are thought how to think and consider the consequences of our actions. Thus, martial arts aim to un-teach us to think before moving. Technically, we are unlearning how to think before moving; as a result we develop an instinct. So, the true debate is what constitutes as an instinct?

Instincts can be seen as genetic programming, that is embedded into our brains (Sincero, 2012). These abilities become apparent when our survival is at risk. So, from these points we can conclude that they are self-focused. But, mothers have a natural instinct to protect children. Wait a moment, protecting another life-form does not contribute to one’s own survival. By looking at the subtext, mothers see their children as an extension of themselves and are driven to shelter them from any possible threats. Subsequently, the quality of  the parenting figure one has as a child can influence their level of instincts. For example, those that grew up with good role models instinctively see the good in people and are more trusting; because they are used to positive responses towards their actions. On the other hand, those that grow up with a negative role model are more protective and their instincts are more reactive in dangerous situations

Today I would like to talk and analyze some of our previous ideas. As I said instinct was not our only one idea we also thought about space and being a baby. This three ideas are similar in being scientific, mysterious and also emotional; however, no one cares about the last one. Here is research which I did for the rest two ideas:

First of all space is the void that exists between celestial bodies, including the Earth. It is not completely empty, but consists of a hard vacuum containing a low density of particles, predominantly a plasma of hydrogen and helium as well as electromagnetic radiation, magnetic fields, neutrinos, dust and cosmic rays. The baseline temperature, as set by the background radiation from the Big Bang, is 2.7 Kelvin (-454.81 °F). Plasma with a number density of less than one hydrogen atom per cubic metre and a temperature of millions of kelvin in the space between galaxies accounts for most of the baryonic (ordinary) matter in outer space; local concentrations have condensed into stars and galaxies. In most galaxies, observations provide evidence that 90% of the mass is in an unknown form, called dark matter, which interacts with other matter through gravitational but not electromagnetic forces. Data indicates that the majority of the mass-energy in the observable Universe is a poorly understood vacuum energy of space which astronomers label dark energy. Intergalactic space takes up most of the volume of the Universe, but even galaxies and star systems consist almost entirely of empty space.

The instinct,possibly, is the reaction and purpose of all creature’s behavior. A large proportion of people holds the opinion that the instinct comes from nature. In scientific domain, the scientist can explain how the instinct works around people in a biological , genetic and psychological way ; that is to say, scientist has the ability to explain how those chemical elements inside creature’s body can affect the situation for example the hormone play an important role influencing creature’s physical and mental health. But there is no evidence to suggest that where on earth is the instinct from in scientific domain. I personally will believe the god probably creates the creature’s instinct or the whole nature,although it sound funny or stupid. Let me give an example, all the researches that scientist is doing for explaining scientific phenomenon are like opening a mysterious door at the same the another door is waiting behind to be opened, I think that is the reason why there is no limit in science, which there is an example to demonstrate my assumption, if why the people, no matter what is their race, culture, background, religion, region, language or even age,are pursuing to be in love with someone who is suitable, yes I definitely know there must be something scientific to say because of the effect of brain’s hormone or other chemical stuffs. It seems that all human beings are still searching for the natural source around us, it is quiet interesting to hear such a bold assumption like me to challenge science according to current stage.

Just as Sujay said, there is an actual physical blue object under the exposure of the ray of light,if we put the object in the gloomy space or room, does this object can keep the same color? theoretically it is blue, but practically it is not by perceptual intuition. For what I mean is that everything is contradictory or dialectical, this philosophical theory still fits for the instinct. The instinct, such a wired thing,  can instructs creature to do something or express the feature of the creature(facial, emotional, motive action), is an natural outcome stored inside the creature.

For this blog, I’ll be referring to the writer of the blog by their designated colour to make it easier to criticise them with minimal bias. For the Quantitative, I’ll be talking about Red’s view on the matter (Kleinos, 2015). Because Red made the blog before we narrowed our topic down to Human Instincts, his topic was based on instincts in general.

I’ll be analysing Red’s conclusions from the information that he has set out within his blog to see if he’s justified himself well and if his conclusions are valid. I will be doing some research to validated or disprove some of his conclusions if necessary.

Red referred to the definition of instinct from the dictionary to justify its meaning (2015). Given the source of the definition, this is a valid conclusion as to what instinct is. He then continues to talk about how instinct is a form of behaviour which can’t be educational. My understanding is that he is stating that you can’t teach instinct but he later talks about how the meaning of instinct is not only operated by scientists but also by religious, philosophical or political units. If the meaning of instinct can be operated, meaning can be changed, by multiple parties, then wouldn’t that mean that instinct can be taught? A religious party would nurture a different instinct from those of a political party. Therefore, the conclusion that instinct can’t be taught is invalid.

He expands on the concept of instinct by saying that if people can predict what others’ instincts are, they can control those people. This is a valid conclusion as it is a basic concept of observation. If you know people act at certain situations, then you can manipulate the situation and environment to make them act the way you want them to.

Red then talks about the complexity of people’s behaviour when instinct gets mixed with emotional shift, saying that their actions become a form of reflex, where they don’t consider what they are doing. It is true that emotion can cloud judgement and so it makes it easier for the body to move autonomously. Having said that, little to no reference of a study done on emotions and irrational choices so the validity of this point is questionable.

Continuing on with the idea of irrational actions through instinct and emotional shifts, he elaborates on how we can lower the risk of irrational thoughts and actions by satisfying certain needs. He lists activities that are related to primal activities such as creating shelter, parenthood and sex. Then, he mentions that these activities provide a complex form of behaviour A study has shown that cutting wood releases more testosterone than playing sports (Borreli, 2013) . This can be interpreted that the body instinctively gets more stimulation from doing a primal activity which then increases the chance of the subject doing something instinctive but unknown to us. This is a somewhat confusing statement as it isn’t very clear. He’s correct about the connection between instincts and primal activities but everything else is inconclusive.

Asking people for answering the underlying thought of the instinct is much easier than directly searching on the internet.On some extent,their answers are more reasonable.

According to dictionary instinct is an inborn pattern of activity or tendency to action common to a given biological species. Often people call instincts behavior which can not be educational. Because of this scientists can not explain nature of this behavior. Also all the facts that instincts is in our gene is more fashionable explanation without understanding real nature of this behaviour. That’s why I can easily say that meaning of instincts operated not only by scientists but also by other people sometimes even in promotion of religious, philosophical or political units. Knowing this people can turning on instinct (enemy reaction) in the system appear physical feeling of uncomfortable (inside or outside irritation) which people can predict and try to control us. More complex is the reaction with sequences and if you also add some emotional shift our instinct will precipitously increase upwards. But we are able to decrease this by satisfaction of needs. This mechanism provide complex forms of behavior. For example, the instinct of building place to live, parent, courtship, sex, protection, food and others.
