i do think what gets ignored about carrie as a character is that she’s an incredibly easy target to bully; she’s a chubby, sheltered acne ridden teenage girl who wears frumpy grandma clothes and regurgitates the jesus freak shit her violently abusive mother tells her. she has violent thoughts about her classmates and is uncomfortable to be around. she’s far more interesting being a victim that’s somewhat uncomfortable to be in the head of than a tragic waif. she’s not a martyr, she’s a child and a child who’s been victimised her whole life shouldn’t have to be kind and angelic to be recognised as a victim. suffering teenage girls shouldn’t just be presented on screen as toned down glamorous thin ophelias, suffering teenage girls can be fat and poor and think violently. i do think we need to examine why culturally we need teenage girls to be beautiful and kind to valorise their suffering and treat it as bad

The idea of it itched under his skin. He had always wanted to be better than other men, after all. It felt easy enough to do in business, when other young men seemed content only to work for their fathers or do as they were directed instead of pushing forward into something new. He had never considered the other arena of life as a place where he might be compared unfavourably to other men, or if not entirely unfavourably, merely found to be the same. That idea itched at him too. He had no intention of excelling in one area and being utterly average in another. A good marriage would provide that.

George Russell seemed to always insist on turning up where Bertha least expected him to be, but she would hold firm in not letting him distract her. First in Newport, where he had insisted on diverting her attention towards him, but she had remained focused on making the right connections. Then at the opera, where he had so distracted her during the intermission that she could hardly pay any attention during the second act, but she had still managed to keep Mrs Webb's good opinion of her. And now, here he was again at the train station, apparently waiting to board the same train out west as she was.

He’d told himself that he’d forget about Bertha now that they’d returned to the city. He’d forgotten girls before, after all, some who must have been far prettier and far more willing to go against their mama’s directions for chastity, not that he could think of any at the present time. When he tried to picture them, his mind could only conjure images of Bertha.
