It had seemed like everything was going smoothly at first, but things suddenly took a turn for the worse. The hospital room became a frenzy of noise, the heart monitor beeping rapidly, the doctors’ and nurses’ voices. Mike found himself ushered out into the waiting area.
This couldn’t really be happening, could it? Amid the quiet murmur of the waiting area’s television and other occupants, the feeling of utter terror began to creep into him. What he feared most seemed to be coming to pass.
The love of his life was in this same building, struggling for his life. There was nothing he could do. He had never felt so helpless.
Mike pressed his hands to the sides of his head and began to cry quietly.
After what seemed an eternity of cycling through a number of painful emotions, Mike was drawn out of his thoughts by a voice.
“Mr. Wazowski…?” a nurse called out, scanning the waiting area. “Mr. Wazowski?” Mike felt a sharp pang of anxiety shoot straight through the center of his body as he looked up and caught the nurse’s gaze. Her face seemed to hold no emotion.
But as he stood up from his chair, she smiled, and Mike felt his heart skip a beat. He stumbled a moment before moving towards her.
“Is…? A…are…?” His hands were trembling.
“Don’t worry, Mr. Wazowski, everything is just fine,” the nurse assured. Mike felt a great burden lift from his being, though its departure left his knees weak, and his mouth hanging open. “There’s someone very special waiting to meet you.” Mike closed his mouth and nodded, and allowed the nurse to lead him down the hall.
As they entered a room, he was greeted by the most amazing sight.
There was Olaf, cradling a small bundle. The snowman looked weak and haggard, but he was alive. He had made it. By god, he had made it!
“Oh Mike…,” Olaf whispered as his lover approached the bed. “She’s so beautiful.” Mike rested a hand on his lap and stared speechlessly as Olaf shifted the blankets so he could see their small snowy baby.
Mike choked back tears. She was the most gorgeous thing he had ever seen. “Hey there Emma,” he cooed, placing his other hand on Olaf’s shoulder. “Happy birthday…”
