not knowing what romance is, not being able to define romance, not knowing whether you experience romantic attraction, etc. is a very aromantic experience.
“what if i CAN experience romantic attraction, i just haven’t yet?” what if you can’t?
you do not need to wait and see if romance will magically make sense to you. you do not need to shape your life around a potential “one day” that may never come.
before i accepted i was aro myself, i always thought aromantics had a firm grasp on romance, and that’s why they could confidently determine whether or not they were aro. i kept on waiting and waiting for the one day that romance finally made sense to me, so i can truly confirm whether i was aro or not. (that day never came)
being able to determine the absence of a feeling (especially one as convoluted and cultural as romance) is difficult. it always felt like some sort of inside joke that i never got, and i don’t think ive ever met an aromantic who truly ‘got’ romance either.
all of this to say, you’re allowed to be aromantic. even if you’re not completely sure, or even if you’ll never be sure; you’re still allowed to be aromantic. <2
