Seven
Soaking up these moments
these moments of seven
where life is simple
and life is clean
where body moves and it matters not
where hands become speckled and there is not a care
where fully present and complete and love is embraced
excitement and thrill
creation and discovery
seven
that face, this moment
a giving of myself
and sacrifice of time
yet I am the one to gain so much more
clarity of what truly matters
every day this is how I want to live
out of myself
out of my mind
out of my interest
out of my self
and into love
agape love
first felt and received
and now in power of God’s grace, given away
seven
love
a love like seven.
(written after spending precious moments with my seven year old nephew)
When I get honest, I admit I am a bundle of paradoxes. I believe and I doubt, I hope and get discouraged, I love and I hate, I feel bad about feeling good, I feel guilty about not feeling guilty. I am trusting and suspicious. I am honest and I still play games. Aristotle said I am a rational animal; I say I am an angel with an incredible capacity for beer. To live by grace means to acknowledge my whole life story, the light side and the dark. In admitting my shadow side I learn who I am and what God's grace means. As Thomas Merton put it, 'A saint is not someone who is good but who experiences the goodness of God.' The gospel of grace nullifies our adulation of televangelists, charismatic superstars, and local church heroes. It obliterates the two-class citizenship theory operative in many American churches. For grace proclaims the awesome truth that all is gift. All that is good is ours not by right but by the sheer bounty of a gracious God. While there is much we may have earned -- our degree and our salary, our home and garden, a Miller Lite and a good nights sleep -- all this is possible only because we have been given so much: life itself, eyes to see and hands to touch, a mind to shape ideas, and a heart to beat with love. We have been given God in our souls and Christ in our flesh. We have the power to believe where others deny, to hope where others despair, to love where others hurt. This and so much more is sheer gift; it is not reward for our faithfulness, our generous disposition, or our heroic life of prayer. Even our fidelity is a gift, 'If we but turn to God,' said St. Augustine, 'that itself is a gift of God.' My deepest awareness of myself is that I am deeply loved by Jesus Christ and I have done nothing to earn it or deserve it.

Goodbye
The paradox of goodbye
where pain and peace collide
was this my choosing?
was this your ploy?
did you know all along,
this relationship we’d destroy?
we pushed so hard we finally broke
misspoke
I threw down my fears
burning, blazing ran my tears
switch gears
live with this pain
hold it close
easier
than choosing to let it go
because loosening my grip on the hurt would mean the disappearance of you
a decision I’m just not ready to do
closer it feels than ever before
then I gaze over and see you laid across my floor
pictures, letters, moments of bliss
brushing your hair
stealing a kiss
miss
not a strong enough word to detail the grief
the isolating numbness of this disbelief
that you’re really gone
you’ve already moved on
and I’m here
moving not
frozen still
all alone
screaming my mind to kill
those memories of together
souls combined to one
obliterated
I’m stranded
left here
undone.
Override
Falling
No one has harder
My heart diving in
Than ever before, farther
The sight of you
This view of new
Hit my blindside
Override
I know not what to do
Then to surrender to this feeling
The taste of well being
My soul freeing
My lungs breathing
My all in all this believing
That the supposed impossible has happened
I’ve arrived at my home
My human place of being known
Fully and whole
Dedicated and sure
You, my John
are exactly who I’ve been looking for.

The someone created for me.
Effortless and free
could this possibly be
the person created for me
the long awaited mystery
believe
I have been searching tenfold
constantly attempting to mold
this person I’ve been told
is worth waiting for since 11 years old
bold
in my journey to discover
that significant other
be patient and constant says mother
and in deep hopes I’m smothered
lover
I stand firm and confident
proud and one hundred and ten percent
sure that you were years well spent
praying and dreaming for such a gent
content
I choose you and only you
to be the person I journey life with through
standing by your side in every move
my heart intertwined with yours I will prove
anew
this life we’ll build together
shaping and making each other better
faced with trials and stormy weather
still, hand in hand, leaving never
ever
I will be yours
I implore
I’m ready to explore
surrendered to whatever is in store
this life with you, my John, I ask for nothing more
Home again.
I can feel the creeping of peace
the potential of free
the rest and ease
as I’m falling to my knees
I’ve been missing
plastered my face on that carton
and I resumed to stay
the loneliness I had bought in
Resorted to feeling so numb
forgetting there could be another way
a choice to choose
but complacent, succumb I stay
But wait
gentle hands gripping my heart
bringing me back to the start
refocusing my eyes to the mark
exposing my hurts and inward parts
I can feel it
the potential
the sun graze my cheek
there is a closeness
a hope
a possibility
a need
So do I jump in
do I believe
take a risk
my soul to cleave
to another life
and change of heart
an offer to again restart
a gift
a morning
an unexpected grace
right now in this moment
I’m blessed with a taste
haste
I’m all inÂ
give me your way
touch me, move me, pull me, control me
and old this clay
a surrender
a white flag
but with no loss or fear
there is nothing but love in the extension here
clear
crystal glass smoothing over my mess
cluttered with distraction
all my dirt I confess
released, removed, and redeemed
I am new
I am not as I had seemed
and this not a dream
in this place I am welcomed to stay
Oh God, never again do I desire to stray
so weak
my feeble flesh crumbles under weight
my follow through depends on the reliance of your strength
please
I beg
don’t let me go
without You, I have no hope
awoke
and here I stand
these glimpse of grace held in my hand
I’ve accepted the offer
I’ve chosen Your way
Following Jesus
My peace, rest, and stay
home once again
my Lord, my friend
my beginning and end.
Cultural Cage
I refuse to be locked in the grasp of the cultural cage
Nose up, brows raised
Assumption, expectation clear for this stage
I perform, I dance, I tick away at the standard
I’m here looking all pretty flapping my wings like a caged bird
Now I’m not talking defiance
I’m not saying rebel
But come on, let’s do this
Let’s shake their grasp and yell
Tell. Tell it like it is
Expression please
Face their faces, side stepping their paces
I’m displaying my heart on my knees
To look like this
And do like that
Individuality desire but wearing the same old hat
Fit the mold
Mold
Feels like straight up mold
Suffocating in the repetition and bland
In striving to be different we all look the same
Yet not united
A part so far with spaces so wide
Alone, misunderstood, with no one to confide
Take my hand
And together stand
and let this labor cease
breathe in sighs of peace
I. I have a long way. A long way to go. But I. I am not the same. Not the same as before. So I. I will be patient. Patient with this growth. . . #growth #change #blooming #process #journey #embrace #thankful #healing #learning #discovering #believing
Survival. Thankful for the chaos of pain, trial, failure, and loss. For without these, one would merely remain the same. Unstained and untouched by change and the possibility of growth. And in these.. we are never alone. . Walk steady my friends. Don't run, hide, or jump. Just walk. Eyes ahead, stepping along. Hands released and heart free. Letting it be. . . #peaceinchaos #paradoxofgoodbye #trial #survival #change #beautyinpain #embrace #letitbe #growth #neveralone #walkalong #thankful

Reciprocate.
Reciprocate Haste with words before I self medicate Self hate Disintegrate. This pressure on you being nothing new Unfair to beg you to change my colours from blue All wrongs I thought I was making right Turns out I only had short sight Fists closed tight Now laying down my fight Tonight. I'm wasting away Watching this hope slowly fade Dismay Disarray Playing with fire, only to later pay This heat These flames Rising higher, screaming your name Untamed. No further casting blame Look See what has became I wait here Steady without shame Claim. Me back for your own Caress my mind, body, and soul Behold. Cursing the day I did as I was told Mold. Back to the person I was meant to be Sifting through sweet memories Rising my plea Honoring what my eyes see A creation of misery Now set off to sea Alive and yes.. Finally free.
I’m not trying to change the world. I'm just trying to create a ripple. . . #imjustme #letitbe #rawjourney #rippleeffect #shadows #healing #soulconnections #loveothers #shine #light #embrace #livefull #nature #breathedeep
Re-creation.
The wall of stone has a masterpiece all its own Beautiful and rigid Righteous and steep A wealth of honest strength in its walls to keep But leap A faith A fault A change A willingness for the ingenuity of pain Came crashing down those same sturdy walls And all will never again be the same The rebirth and discovery of edges anew The washing and power of water breaking through Beaten down and broken Then smoothed over and woven Into a creation those walls craved to be A breath A moment A masterpiece Of possibility A sight to see A lesson of free Of movement and wind and an intricately directed plea It’s frame can never return It’s walls can never unlearn The reshaping and hurt The pangs of rebirth Yet sorrow is felt not Nor the wishing of rewind In the whisper of wind In the cool of water All is fine Released and restored In its time
When mono becomes a gift.
Angry. I was so angry. How could I get mono? Scientifically, yes. But in my reality, no. I have no time for mono, for slowing down my busy life schedule. Then gradually, my body became a crumbling weak mess which I could no longer manipulate and control as I was used to doing. I always chose how I ran it - it obeyed me. The one thing in life I could dictate and alter as I pleased. Gone.
Spending more time in a horizontal position, at the mercy of whoever would be handing me my next popsicle to ease my swollen throat and lymph nodes, I was shown my fragility. Daily I had grown accustomed to my schedule of twelve hour nursing shifts as a critical care nurse, hours of school work in earning my next degree, and the mix of running my world with cleaning, meetings, and exercising my body. All of that has come to a standstill as my body has grown weaker and increased in pain. And now my daily schedule looks much different. It's now filled with little movement and very few words due to the exhaustion and pain. This, you could imagine, has not been easy for me to digest.
I've been through an array of thoughts and emotions. Disappointed, depressed, frustrated, angry, bored, apathetic, hopeless, lonely, guilt-ridden. But now, through my obligation to stillness and nothingness, I am beginning to see that I have been stressing and working and rushing from event to event in my life.. and for what? Placing my energy in these "things" that I'm trying to build.. instead of in myself.. the person I want to build. I've been seeking these accomplishments. Striving for perfection and completion. All the while, missing the beauty of the journey because of the toppling weight and high standard I've placed upon these things in life. Not to say they're not important or worth while endeavors.. But I have grossly misplaced their priority. I have shuffled my own well-being deep beneath the objectivity of success and productivity. With mono, I have no choice but to realign my heart and mind to that which truly matters in life.
In the slowness and quietness of my days, I have more time than I would have wished to just THINK. To watch. I watch the wind move leaves and limbs on the trees outside. I feel its soft, cool touch graze my cheek from the window as I sit in my dad’s chair. It’s amazing the simple beauties of creation that I have become so in tuned with and thankful for during this time. And I wonder.. why did any of those obligations in my life matter so much to me? Why did I feel like I had to be plugged into so much in order to feel value and important? Did I.. could I.. have intrinsic value and worth.. simply for the fact that I exist. Is humanness alone, the act of being alive, enough to give a person significance? Do we need any external accomplishment or person or object to increase our worth?
The existential quality of humans alone is more than enough to give each soul purpose, value, and significance. Every person - regardless of what they are doing or saying or changing or accomplishing - has worth - intrinsic, whole and full worth - completely set apart from any other piece in life.Â
So if this is true.. then me.. just me.. laying here, doing nothing but writing and sleeping and reading.. not out saving lives or writing a twenty page research paper or training for a marathon or having an intentional interaction with another person.. myself alone has significance. I have worth and purpose and value - intrinsically - for the fact that I exist with the breath in my lungs and beat of my heart and thoughts in my head and a soul spirit residing within me.
So thank you mono. Thank you for striping away my external parts - of work and accomplishments and successes and goals - of relationships and items I own and the way I look.  Thank you for taking away my abilities and energy. Thank you for ridding me of my voice and my movement. For without this, I am not sure I would have discovered these eternal truths that may just save me from a path I was unaware I was traveling down. I have wasted far too much life under a weight I didn’t need to bear, a hindering burden I’ve placed on my own shoulders. But this too, had a purpose of its own. I suppose I’m the type of person that needed to be laid down, quite literally, for months in order to have the weight lifted from my shoulders and blinders removed from my eyes. There is always room for growth, much of the time in areas we didn’t realize we needed it. And the gift of mono has given me just that.. space, quietness, solidarity - in which to bloom.Â
Perspective. Always perspective.
When life gives you Mono:
I’ve been sick for roughly one month now. I don’t mean that I am sick beyond function or chained to a hospital bed.. but I have been limited substantially enough. I have been set back from progressing at my new job - to the point where I now have been forced to file a leave of absence. I have been in pain. I have experienced more sleepless nights than not. I have missed out on life events - bridal showers, retirement parties, casual Sunday afternoon family dinners and more. I have not been able to run - my mechanism of physical and emotional release. I’m not sure which is worse - the physical abruption to my life or the overall apathy and depression taking place within me. You would think that all of this would cause me to want to take greater care of my body and my soul. Nope. In anger I went for a four mile run the day after my diagnosis. I paid the consequences of that action. Paying for consequences. A place my mind has drifted to again and again. I can’t help but feel the heavy weight of my deserving of illness. It’s a story.. But the short of it is that my own poor choices have brought me to the state I am in now. So how could I be angry? We reap what we sow. And have I sowed carelessly. I do NOT intend to play the “woe is me” card. I am not a victim. Like I had said, this is a reaping and sowing affect. I understand my decisions have built upon one another to place me here. I expect no pity, nor do I desire it in any form. Rather, I would prefer to be left alone. For people to not even be aware of my happenstance. I am not foolish to believe that I have it the worst or that life is oh-so-terrible for me. If anything, this has made me much more sensitive to those who battle with chronic illness. The torture of feeling suboptimal on a daily basis while people around you have not a clue is classic characteristic of chronic illness. The loneliness and sadness that comes along with being unable to do the things you love and participate in community the way you desire. For this increased understanding, I am thankful. I am also thankful, in my brief moments, for the opportunity to slow down. Today I laid in the grass in the coolness of the evening. It is the first time since I can’t remember when that I do not have a place to be, a person to be with, or an obligation to fulfill. I have no topic in which my mind must be engaged in - a moment I have avoided with my cover of school and work for quite some time now. I just lay. Barely moving. Feeling the bugs leap on my skin with their tiny legs. And in the brevity of this moment I enjoy stillness and simplicity and the nothingness which is allowing me the space to take notice of life. Life around me. My own life. I know this moment won’t last and soon I’ll be antsy again at all that I cannot do and the discontentment of my circumstance. But mono is no short process.. So maybe I’ll come to the point where these realizations and feelings reside longer in my heart and mind. Maybe. They will even have the chance to become a part of my worldview. Perspective. Always perspective.

believe.
Belief is powerful. Your actions, your results, your entire world is shaped by the lens you choose to wear. I am caught off guard as voices cause me to turn my head, slapping those viewing glasses from my eyes. Neck twisted and vision blurred, I grip and stretch to grab hold of a stabling force. Something to direct and give me sight, But all end in black night. Until at once I succumb to pity that this is all life is - A hopeless darkness of shadows and hallow pits. But belief. A touch of sun grazes my cheek, Begs me to sway my head to its heat. Those shadows dig in my skin as I plead to let the light in. Fighting. I'm reaching at those frames I have settled to wear. With a glimmer of hope I maintain my fight. I will die before I give in to that hopeless night - The bitters I've believed as being all the offers of life. Until finally there's a break - a moment of free. My eyes gaze up with this new found light I see. My journey has wavering trails, Each with their own lens to derail. Calling my name and whispering poison with their fingers laced on my skin. My head twists to begin Down another path I didn't intend. I will drift and I will wear frames of lies. I will sink deep to a low where even myself I despise. But graced again and again I will be, By the truth that screams and cries to set me free. A sun. A light. A lens. A belief. Of eternity.
