Apollo and Dionysus by helium_raven
tried my hand at @creatingblackcharacters 's dionysus redesign DTIYS! go check out the other entries on their page bc they're really cool
design notes: - i gave him leopard eyes bc dionysus is associated with leopards - he also has retractable claws - i was trying to lean into the god of madness aspect of him with the birthmark/pattern on his body, i wanted it to look kind of delirious & like an oil spill - i made him less muscular than the original because i don't think that body type makes sense for him - D is known for lounging around and being a diva - i made all of his colors warmer/redder to emulate red wine

Dionysus' childhood.
Behind him are the dead temporary caretakers, and Hermes is about to take him on the next leg of his journey.
Mrs. Musters as Hebe (1782) by Sir Joshua Reynolds (English, 1723–1792), oil on canvas, 239 cm (94 in) x 144.8 cm (57 in), Kenwood House, London
I never wondered about the fact that whoever is the cup-bearer of the gods likely also has to give drinks to the animals of Olympus....
Hebe, the Goddess of Youth, daughter of Hera and Zeus, was the cup-bearer of the gods before she married the deified Heracles. It was Hebe's duty to serve ambrosia and nectar to Zeus and the other gods.
To be a royal cup-bearer in the ancient world was to hold an exalted position, trusted with the health and safety of the ruler - and the eagle in images of this particular trope is generally construed not as the messenger of Zeus but actually Zeus, the King of the Gods, taking the form of the eagle.
So, no, bringing water to the actual animals of Olympus was not part of her duties.

Not enough people associate Zeus with dance—specifically war dances.
During his infancy, Zeus was surrounded by the war dance of the Kouretes, and in his adulthood, he's described as shaking his aegis: an action which isn't awfully dissimilar to the choreography of dancing warriors.
But wait, there's more!
Zeus as War-god seems to be a rather unsung aspect in our modern, popular culture. One that you'd think would have more acclaim, given how prevalent he is in both myth and cult.
On the literary/artistic side of ancient Greek religious history, we see Zeus depicted as a warrior early on in both the Titano- and Gigantomachy—two myths, which were incredibly popular in antiquity, as evidenced by the sheer amount of representational art that survives of them.
These war myths were especially influential when it came to Zeus's iconography because they were most closely associated with the image of Father of Gods and Humans rearing his arm back to throw his fiery thunderbolt.
On the cultic side of things, Zeus was worshipped at his most famous cultic site—Olympia—as a war god.
Many of the votive offerings dedicated to him there were of horses, figurines clad in armor, spear points, etc. He was routinely offered war booty from across Greece, and people would fashion poles on which to display armor, either from fallen soldiers, enemies, or retirees, if I had to guess.
Pausanias additionally describes that the Zeus statue present in the Heraion at Olympia depicted him as standing and donning a helmet.

a quick psa to anyone recently getting into greek mythology and is a victim of tumblr and/or tiktok misconceptions:
-there is no shame in being introduced to mytholgy from something like percy jackson, epic the musical or anything like that, but keep in mind that actual myths are going to be VERY different from modern retellings
-the myth of medusa you probably know (her being a victim of poseidon and being cursed by athena) isn't 100% accurate to GREEK mythology (look up ovid)
-there is no version of persephone's abduction in which persephone willingly stays with hades, that's a tumblr invention (look up homeric hymn to demeter)
-as much as i would like it, no, cerberus' name does not mean "spot" (probably a misunderstanding from this wikipedia article)
-zeus isn't the only god who does terrible things to women, your fav male god probably has done the same
-on that note, your fav greek hero has probably done some heinous shit as well
-gods are more complicated than simply being "god of [insert thing]", many titles overlap between gods and some may even change depending on where they were worshipped
-also, apollo and artemis being the gods of the sun and the moon isn't 100% accurate, their main aspects as deities originally were music and the hunt
-titans and gods aren't two wholly different concepts, titan is just the word used to decribe the generation of gods before the olympians
-hector isn't the villain some people make him out to be
-hephaestus WAS married to aphrodite. they divorced. yes, divorce was a thing in ancient greece. hephaestus' wife is aglaia
-ancient greek society didn't have the same concepts of sexuality that we have now, it's incorrect to describe virgin goddesses like artemis and athena as lesbians, BUT it's also not wholly accurate to describe them as aromantic/asexual, it's more complex than that
-you can never fully understand certain myths if you don't understand the societal context in which they were told
-myths have lots and lots of retellings, there isn't one singular "canon", but we can try to distinguish between older and newer versions and bewteen greek and roman versions
-most of what you know about sparta is probably incorrect
-reading/waching retellings is not a substitute to reading the original myths, read the iliad! read the odyssey! i know they may seem intimidating, but they're much more entertaining than you may think
greek mythology is so complex and interesting, don't go into it with preconcieved notions! try to be open to learn!

I think that the resurgence of love for Hades is reflective of how much Hades loves humanity. Even after his image was slandered by christian society, getting reduced to “the greek equivalent of Satan”, and being made into the villain of countless pieces of media- people still love and talk about Hades.
And as they should! He is Nekrôn Sôtêr (the savior of the dead). He accepts everyone into his realm indiscriminately and gives them a home to spend the rest of eternity in. He rules by love, not fear. He keeps all of the monsters and cruel beings locked in Tartarus where they can’t hurt us. He gave his wife equal power and authority to him. He is the god of all the beauty in the earth, from the fertile soil with nourished the seed-grain to the mined wealth of gold, silver and crystals.
I adooooore Hades! and so should everyone !
