When you ask Davrin if he misses his clan, he says he does, but he believes in some form that he doesn't deserve to feel sad about it because he made his choice to leave.
What if I say I think that a lot of his motivations is largely driven from guilt and regret?
Davrin says that when he first left, he ended up penniless, and became a monster hunster to make a living. He felt like he couldn't go back to his clan under the assumption that they didn't want him back (which I personally believe is untrue).
He felt guilty and I think at that low point, he believed he regretted leaving his clan. He wanted to go back - to me, Davrin is someone who longs for community (we'll return to this). But he felt the need to justify leaving before he felt like he could return, so it wasn't all worthless. To make his regret about his choice a little less shameful.
He needed a purpose and the Grey Wardens fulfill that. Now his purpose is to die in a blaze of glory. It wouldn't have been for nothing, it would assuage his guilt of leaving his community. He tunnel visioned on this. By the time we get to the Siege of Weisshaupt, he was fully ready to die.
He's said he hasn't built any deep relationships for a long time. Even with his fellow Wardens, though they fulfill that sense of community he longs for.
When you first meet him, his purpose is set. Davrin doesn't half-ass things, he's going to follow this through. He will die. That is his purpose now. In a morbid way, he feels it's what clears him of guilt.
But he doesn't. The thing he's spent all those years preparing himself for, his very purpose, doesn't happen. What now?
The guilt returns for sure. Grey Wardens DIE. Why didn't he? His fellow Wardens died at the siege but HE'S STILL HERE. It rocks his world.
What is his purpose now?
The Griffons.
But then there's Rook. He never saw them coming. He never expected to fall this hard. He wasn't supposed to. Because regardless of whether or not he died slaying the Archdemon, he still has taint in his blood. His expiration date is sooner than Rook's.
And now he's allowed himself to think - to WANT - a future. With Rook. When all he could think of beforehand was that he will die. Now he has to live.
Now I wonder. Does he secretly regret becoming a Warden? Does he feel guilt at the idea of leaving Rook and the Griffons behind?
Davrin's decisions to assuage or "fix" choices he regrets with something kind of extreme is so interesting to me. He's such a great character to microwave in your head.
I also think his relationship with Eldrin provides interesting insights.
I haven't run across much, if anything, about Davrin's childhood or clan life, but he says he spent summers in Arlathan with Eldrin, which seems to imply it's differentiating from time spent elsewhere. Eldrin not only mentions that Davrin used to sing to the halla, but greets him by teasing that he used to be "too small, even for an elf". So Davrin wasn't always this fit hunk we know and love, and he describes Eldrin has having taught him what to hunt and why, the philosophy of the Way of Three Trees, and he was tasked as being a sheperd for the halla for enough summers that he learned a very reliable trick to call one out of the forest. He says Eldrin was against him joining the Wardens ("too much darkness") so clearly he sought him out before joining - whether for advice or just a good-bye visit.
When I think about his dialogue, it sounds like Davrin maybe always struggled a little with where he was at - either to fit in or to find a purpose. The Wardens sound like they gave Davrin everything he was looking for - not just a community, but a general purpose (continued monster hunting, caring for the griffons), something of a philosophy (giving people a second chance in life - his dialogue about this is SO interesting), and an ultimate dream (defeating the "worst" evil the world has to offer, at the time he joins - an arch demon).
It's no wonder he has a crisis when those systems start failing - Weisshaupt (and all its symbolism) falls, all the griffons except Assan are stolen, he begins to find out the Wardens were corrupt, and even killing an arch-demon doesn't go the way he expects and he has massive survivor's guilt.
The man likes structure and a chain of command. He's the only one who calls Rook "the boss" that I can recall, even half-jokingly. He wants to know how things work so he can understand them as thoroughly as possible. I think chaos and the unknown bother him more than people realize.

Found these little lovelies while poking around in the game files. One for each companion, and they're all carved by Davrin, if the filenames are to be believed.
As far as I can tell, they only show up in the team assignments cinematic for the final quest (and pretty briefly at that).
Would have loved to see Davrin actually making them, instead of whittling at the same wooden block all the time. :'(

The way some people talk about Veilguard would make you think that the other Dragon Age games are perfect masterpieces but... They aren't. Every game in this series has its flaws and I'm tired of people pretending that the other games have no flaws to make VG look worse
