There's always a moment of intense cultural whiplash whenever I realize I'm talking to someone who thinks "legal" and "illegal" are meaningful categories and ascribes innate goodness to following the law. It's like meeting a space alien.

it’s actually quite easy to take over a small local government group if you really want to, bc if you volunteer consistently people will just put you in charge of whatever. I’m now one of like three people at a nature preserve making official decisions about trails, events, putting in a prairie, and designing a series of illustrations for a storybook trail etc., and it’s just because last summer I started coming over once a week to help the naturalist out for a couple hours. Mine now. you too can steal an organization and shape it to your will 🫵

Two of my friends and I have taken over the local guild that runs a large portion of charity events in our town. We’re changing bylaws and setting new policies and coordinating with other groups. All we did was volunteer, and they practically strongarmed us into accepting the president, vice president (me) and treasurer positions. VOLUNTEER, KIDS. YOU TOO CAN LET THE SMALLEST AMOUNT OF POWER GO TO YOUR HEADS.

To speak very seriously for a moment here. I do hope all queer Jewish folk are able to feel safe and comfortable here. I've seen a lot of queer Jewish people talk about feeling unsafe or uncomfortable in queer spaces due to rising antisemitism, or even having to leave for their own safety (or getting forced out of their local community). Saying it is awful doesn't even begin to describe it. I want this blog to be a place where all Jewish people are welcome. This pride month, I hope to see many queer Jews being able to enjoy the celebrations in safety and surety that they belong. Speak up for your fellow queer folk and protect them. Go out of your way to make sure Jewish folk feel safe and welcomed in your space; go out of your way to listen to them when they are speaking on the issues they face, including (and this month, especially) in queer spaces. No one left behind.
