oh I'm currently reading howl's moving castle and what's been Catching My Attention like a shiny is :
1. How effective Sophie's introduction IS. Since she was little she formed her understanding of the world on popular narratives - fairytales* ex: the three siblings trope where the eldest doesn't do anything extraordinary. Then she goes on to make hats and give them personalities and invent narratives for the wearers, literally giving a piece of appearence importance and story.
Meanwhile she herself on the outside doesn't look like her insides (an old lady in a young body) because it's a book about appearance and essence and IT'S ALL ESTABLISHED IN ONE CHAPTER DAMN IT!! BRILLIANT!
To underline this even more, her sisters switch places AND faces, literally switching Sophie's preconceived narratives AND their outward appearance to match.
And then Sophie gets transformed into an old lady to match her insides as well.
*and Howel is of course representing the heartless bad wizard that isn't heartless or bad but also. His appearance is pompous and dashing but he's actually a mess.
2. How Sofie as an old woman CONTINUES to defy stereotypes even if she herself doesn't realise it! It's a great piece of narrative device and perfect point of view usage. Sofie continually thinks about how being old frees her from the expectations a patriarchal society had put on her when she was percieved as a young woman. BUT all characters around constantly tell her how "unusually x for an old woman" she is. She is NOT acting like an old woman. She is acting like herself.
Anyway yes. Good good writing.

Plus plus - Howl comes from a very simple ordinary background (Wales. WALES) but when he slips away he quite literally takes up a new extraodinary identity and changes his name, which is in its own way a type of hat/ label. He names himself after a mythical hero, King Arthur Pendragon, who represents quite literally the anyman with A Title that makes him The Chosen One.
This book is so good.

I’ve been thinking about Howl’s Moving Castle and how Sophie’s curse is a physical symbol of her self belief of being romantically unlovable (especially after growing up with beautiful, sought after women in her family.) How Howl tries to undo the curse the moment she steps into his castle but he *cant* because Sophie doesn’t want it to be broken. How, in the film, Sophie gets so close to breaking the curse in the field, but hearing Howl call her beautiful went against her self views, so she reinforces her sense of self by turning 90 again.
And the way that her love and kindness make her younger again and again. How film Sophie sacrifices her long hair, perhaps what past Sophie would have seen as her only beauty, for Howl but she’s grown so much that she still remains young, perhaps even confident about her grey hair, showing that Sophie no longer links her appearance to her lovability or worth and she learned to accept herself as she is. I was so happy to work with colors again. Storyboarding is cool but sometimes I feel the urge to play with colors for no reason.
Spring is my favorite season and I’m sad that we’re more or less stuck inside… so I drew this piece imagining my own fantasy of a perfect springtime! I also tried playing around with a bit of a different style this time. My relationship with drawing has always been muddled with anxieties about performance, and it’s been especially bad this year. So I am resolutely trying to keep drawing “fun” and experiment with new things without worrying about the final product 😊.

Okay guys you have to know that Okami was a BIG part of my childhood. I loved that game so much! I played it all the way through 4 or 5 times. And this was when I had to take over the family tv to do so. (It really annoyed my sisters as you can imagine).
I always loved Issun and I thought I would try to draw more with ink pens in the process. I really enjoyed drawing him.
