not-so-mini rant about Evil Dead Burn **SPOILERS AHEAD**:
do i think it was a good movie? artistically, yes.
will i ever watch it again? unlikely.
to me, it retained almost nothing about the original trilogy (except of course the Necronomicon deadite thing), which i completely adore, especially the second and third films. it felt like Hereditary emotionally, which i almost could not finish. i think i'm in the small camp of people that thought it was too much.
they KILLED the FUCKING DOG. hated that. (although i'll admit that zombie dog kind of reminded me of the dogs in Resident Evil 2 which was neat i suppose?) and oh boy the second alternate ending with Ellie from Evil Dead Rise killing the kid?? completely undeserved. she didn't even know anything!!
oh and i basically hated everyone except the grandma, Alice and the two people who were killed off at the very beginning of the movie. even though the grandma was kinda mean, i think she had dementia or something. so i can't really blame her entirely. i did feel bad for the father bc he lost his kid. when he tried to open the coffin to "save" him, my heart kinda hurt for him. i'd have probably done the same thing. but it was hard to like him once more came out about the family later in the movie. i just feel like he knew something that he wasn't telling anyone or he just didn't give me the greatest of vibes.
my few highlights were:
- the two second cameo of Bruce Campbell being the grandpa in the pic. very nice. "we love you Bruce", we all say in unison
- it was actually scary with some nice gore
- the acting was really good imo and the deadite makeup was well done; nice to look at in a gross way
- satisfying ending where the final girl gets to fucking demolish her abuser. very cool Alice, good job.
*edited* - i will also say the title delivered. there was in fact a lot of burning in Evil Dead Burn
and you're probably gonna say "well Zero, what did you think of Evil Dead Rise then? did you not know that this would carry a similar tone?"
yeah i figured as much, especially with the first 10 minutes of the movie. but tbh, i haven't really gone back to rewatch Evil Dead Rise either. i enjoyed it, sure. i'll probably rewatch it if i do a series rewatch. but i still greatly prefer the first three Evil Dead movies. (no, i haven't seen the 2013 remake, yes i'm gonna watch it at some point)
