[man, duncle is doing numbers very unexpectedly LMFAO. yall shld give my girl Gnome @inkpots-n-sass a follow :nodding emoji: she's my day one on this blog AND she writes a mean OC, i love her very much and Gai and Reni are about to have a baby. Well. Reni is about to have a baby out of wedlock and Gai, her spiritual brother, will be a good brother and help her out with it, and kind of become the kid's dad. duncle.]
Been watching the last few episodes of Naruto again, especially the final goodbye between Minato and Naruto and I've got to say, Minato really is a shinobi above the rest, and I mean that in the best and worst possible way, the only others I can think of that come close are Kakashi and Itachi. Let me explain my reasoning.
Minato is an amazing shinobi in the traditional sense, we know this. He's the fastest man alive, he can single handedly destroy platoons, can teleport away beast bombs, master in sealing jutsu, sealed away the 9 tails, highest ever records at the academy, tactical genius and so much more. He also comes off as kind and caring, he's light hearted, optimistic, funny, caring, bright and golden etc. So he really does come off as the perfect shinobi, but it's the other things about him, I think, that make him different.
First off, we don't know about Minato's family, or atleast I don't know, so it's highly likely that he was an orphan, and likely born during the second shinobi world war. He is essentially a war child. Sure, he jokes around, smiles, and loves kushina and does everything in his power to protect her, but, he is ruthlessly efficient at it. Even when he foils Kushina's kidnapping attempt, at 11 years old, killing the perpetrators, he is still serene as he holds kushina, because they were enemy ninja.
He has a loving girlfriend, but he fights ruthlessly in war because he is Shinobi. He teaches his genin team, he is playful with them, patient with them, but then turns around and puts them in dangerous situations because that's the sacrifice the situation demanded and they are all Shinobi.
He deals with the loss of his students and simultaneously moves forward because he is Shinobi, and this is their life. Obito dies, but they still take Kanabi bridge, because war stops for no one.
He puts Kakashi in ANBU because he doesn't know how to deal with the messy emotions his student is showing beyond teaching him to package them neatly and move forward, like he does. He thinks keeping being Shinobi should be enough.
When he becomes Hokage, it genuinely is a great decision. You can see it based on how well loved he was as a Hokage and a hero. I have no doubt he would hate Danzo and his policies and he would never allow them, or atleast work around them in a way that would be way better than whatever Hiruzen managed. He would never have stood for the cleansing of the Uchihas, because well 1) without the Kyubi and his death it never would have happened, but also on the off chance something like this cropped up in his reign, he would try to negotiate a peace deal, but if it fails, he wouldn't ask Itachi to kill everyone, he would kill Fugaku and the other leaders of the of the rebellion in quiet assassinations, and then turn around with smiles and try to negotiate again. Pure efficiency, because that's better as a Shinobi.
He's a loving husband and father, but when Kushina gives birth, he knows that his wife is in pain, but he has to reseal the nine tails before it comes undone, so no break. Then, the Kyubi attack puts him in an insane position, his newborn child and wife vs. the village, Kyubi and attacker, he protects the village, he has no choice, he is their Hokage, even though he could choose to leave it to Hiruzen and the others. The most he could do is give Kushina more time with Naruto. He and his family choose the village over their own family. When kushina asks him why he would leave such a burden on Naruto, he says it's because their family is Shinobi. It truly struck me, that while Minato is willing to put his life on the line always, he will not put his responsibilities or the village on the line. He would sentence his newborn son to the fate of Jinchuriki and die himself than leave the matter unfinished. Because he and his family are Shinobi and it had to be done. Eventually Kushina also agrees.
When his son accuses him of putting the Jinchuriki in him, we see that he feels sorrow for it, because he loves his son, but not regret, because it had to be done. During the war arc, he can see that Naruto is fighting a war and struggling, and fighting, but he also continues his duty and his own fight. It really struck me then, normally a father would hover around their son and try and protect them from the worst of it, but Minato doesn't, yes, he helps and puts his life on the line for Naruto, he doesn't stop his own fight and doesn't actively step in, he knows where the tactical advantage is and continues to press it. He knows he place on the battlefield and he stays there.
He loves Naruto and Kushina, you can see it in every aspect of his being, but he knows he is Shinobi first, he will kill the people he has to, fight the people he has to, make the sacrifices he has to. He can't give that up, and I love the Kushina sees and loves that too. In the last moments he says goodbye to Naruto, you can see his grief at leaving his son again, but he knows that he cannot stay, he cannot stay and deny everything else.
The best part about Minato is that he loves his family, but not enough to forget his responsibilities. He still finds time to make further sacrifices as well, he gives more time to Kushina with Naruto, even in the seal, he devotes more of the chakra to Kushina, even though that means to some extent, he has trapped Kushina with the nine tails and himself with the shinigami.
Minato is the antithesis or someone like Madara or Obito, who couldn't give up their grief and burned the world with it, also the antithesis of sasuke. He has his mistakes, his trauma, his grief, but he knows his duty first and foremost.
What makes him amazing is that despite probably seeing the worst of Shinobi life, he's still bright and golden, and I don't know what that makes him, a sociopath with his emotions locked up, or something else entirely. It's even more amazing when you realise, all those years trapped in the shinigami stomach with the worst of Kurama's hatred, and nothing but darkness and his mistakes and his grief, he doesn't loose to Kurama, but instead manages to control and bond with him. Like that's crazy, even Naruto struggled with it.
That's why I love Minato, his downsides and his upsides. He truly is a Shinobi beyond everyone else. Kakashi comes close, because for all the grief his village has given him, the death of his father because of the village's hatred, himself being called friend killer Kakashi, and his years in ANBU. He's still stupidly loyal to Konoha, he still uses the last of his energy to protect Choji to get a message to Tsunade before he dies in the Pain attack. Similarly Itachi, who is happy dying as a Shinobi of the leaf.
Anywho this is just my rant of how much I love Minato.
he’s so destructive 🥰
constructing arbitrary “if this happens then i will do that” not just as punishment, but as a way to manifest his preferred outcomes
trying to carve out the future by sheer willpower
this man embodies extremity and delusion and is lucky it works out for him most of the time
Lee is lucky it worked out for him, with a sensei like that, idolising him without knowing better because he never had anything better. if he’s wise, he’d look back when he’s grown / at Gai’s age and be like “what the fuck, sensei?” —> you can love them, but still know that they were wrong and did you wrong. well, unless Lee is genuinely as ill as him (also possible but slightly less fun)
it’s a wonder that his loved ones can stand him at all (they cannot)

I would burn the whole world down if it meant keeping you warm.
It was easy enough to hide the symptoms as they mirrored others she already had that was until her constant sickness grew suspicious, and her uniform grew a bit too snug so she couldn’t wave off the questions and concerns any longer. Not to mention bribing the medical staff was getting expensive so coming clean was right, but her fear came true when she was put on leave from work.
All for what? A stupid mistake, a misstep in trust, for seeking comfort in someone who she thought felt the same way as she did? He didn’t because when she told him it was too much, and in less than five minutes she left her reeling alone at the unplanned turn in life.
It wasn’t unpleasant just not what she envisioned but in the aftermath of the war the only plan she truly had was to be next to her father by now, so could she really say this wasn’t to plan? Still work had sustained her, given her something to focus on, and now that was gone she was like a boat without a moor, nothing to hone her focus and she was spiraling some as the reality of her decision settled in. The idea of motherhood petrified her more than facing death had, and she wondered if someone who didn’t have a mother themselves could even pull this off? Someone without anyone left at that?
Even if she wasn’t coping she had to tell people before gossip got there first yet out of those on her list Gai was the worst of them all. They weren’t back to the way they were before the war, and she wasn’t exactly sure he wouldn’t judge her and honestly his judgment felt too close to home. Too painful especially if he confirmed every doubt she had herself. If she truly was making the wrong choice by choosing to raise this child alone and to forge through all the shit that was about to come about because of said decision.
And yet in the middle of her spiel about independence and finding a way through she found herself throwing up her guts for the fourth time that day and leaning against the cool title in his bathroom.
Gai simply offered her a glass of water and such sappy sentiment which only made her feel like throwing up all over again but at least she didn’t feel so alone now. Felt a bit of earth under her feet for the first time since she found out.
“You are ridiculous,” she sighed exhausted “Please be that ridiculous to your future niece or nephew.”
This is going to sound stupid but when I was drunk and thought I was a stripper where I did toss my pants?
Texts From Last Night Starter Sentences
Eyes flicked him up and down keeping her face neutral though she was laughing so hard inside. The image of him sans pants was stunning almost as stunning as him playing stripper for the entire bar and giving everyone a good show. Gai must have walked away with a week's wage after that stunt. He had a career path if he decided to give up the shinobi life. Crashing out on her couch after they staggered home the whole ordeal was worth the slight headache she felt this morning more from his snoring than the alcohol but still it was worth it. Casually flipping the page in her book before she dryly responds to the inquiry "I'm holding them hostage until you turn in your late mission report."

He doesn't know what this is about. Maybe he's seeking advice about leading a mission? Or perhaps more relationship discussions? Gai doesn't mind -- he's promised to be there whatever it would be about.
With the patience of a man who's obviously isn't dealing for the first time with an emotionally repressed shinobi struggling to acknowledge his feelings, Gai stands, and waits with a genial smile on his face. He could ask Neji to sit, but if Neji wanted to sit, he'd have done so.
When Neji speaks, Gai blinks at him. "... Huh?"
He has no idea what Neji is talking about.
A deep, heavy sigh. He wanted to chalk it up to being early morning but that would be a lie. He had been thinking about this since the day he walked out of Gai's apartment after that conversation. And it finally clicked.
The embarrassment had hit him in the middle of a work out, mid-crunch. He had never told Gai that it was him and Tenten who had engaged in extracurricular activities on the training grounds.
Gai had somehow known - or even worse, he had just guessed correctly.
"How did you know it was Tenten?" But the look on Gai's face told him he would have to explain more. He closes his eyes tightly. Another quiet moment. He was attempting to will away the rising sense of embarrassment he could feel burning along his shoulders and ears.
"... when I was here the other day, do you remember what we spoke about? You knew. You knew it was- how did-" He pinched the bridge of his nose. He was grounding himself, give him a moment.
Neji hasn't completed his thought, but Gai ... the frown on his face slowly morphs into a wide-eyed, starry expression as the realisation now hits Gai, too.
"Oh. ... OH!" Gai claps his hands together, and grins goofily at Neji. "You are right! You didn't say it was Tenten, did you?"
A bark of gleeful laughter breaks out, and Gai folds his arms across his chest. Smug, yes, but also fond, as he regards his pink-eared, resentful student. "But surely-surely it couldn't have been anyone else. It was only a reasonable assumption for me to make. The affection you share for one another is as apparent as the rays of dawn, growing stronger and brighter as time passes!"
@unmeikatte asked:
Neji is, once again, knocking at Gai's door. It's an early 6AM visit - but he has business he has to take care of before he can start his daily yoga routine. After Gai doesn't answer immediately, Neji is already pulling his copy of the door's key out.
It's obvious who's behind the door -- three sharp raps, not urgent, not rushed. Not too quiet, either. It's precise, controlled, even the same timbre as before. It's Neji. Gai is already dressed, and has just put away the last of his dishes, but by the time he reaches the door, Neji has already turned the key.
They stand face to face, two early risers unfazed by an interaction at dawn. "Good morning, Neji, my lifelong and treasured apprentice! To what do I owe the pleasure of your generous visit today?"
Neji steps inside of his apartment. He looks at him - and immediately, his face is telling. Narrowed eyes. Slight frown on his lips. Eyebrows slightly furrowed. He shuts the door behind him quietly.
He stares at him in silence.
They can both hear the song of morning doves outside of the window. The sun rising overhead, bringing the world to life.
And Neji is still staring at him in silence.
Irritated.
Annoyed.
Miffed.
And finally - the silence is broken, after a long, drawn out silence.
"I never said it was Tenten."
He doesn't know what this is about. Maybe he's seeking advice about leading a mission? Or perhaps more relationship discussions? Gai doesn't mind -- he's promised to be there whatever it would be about.

"Would you rather be tin foil, cling film, or baking paper? I would be cling film because I will never abandon my loved ones!"
"Tinfoil. Study, versatile, fire-resistant, and good for potatoes!"
".....you're both idiots. With way too much free time. I need to give you more work."
"Wonderful answer, Genma! Tsunade-sama, I patiently await your response, which I'm sure you're deliberating deeply upon."
"Would you rather be tin foil, cling film, or baking paper? I would be cling film because I will never abandon my loved ones!"
"I would be baking paper so I can be toxic to people and leak PFAS. ♡"
"Great answer, Orochimaru-sama!"

"Do you do tongue workouts often?"
"I wouldn't say I have a particular regimen to strengthen my tongue, but it is indeed incredibly agile and strong because of my years of experience!"
Gives Gai those Hyūga doe-eyes.
What an intense gaze! How deep do those Hyuga eyes go? Gai rarely gets a chance to admire the famed ivory eyes at length. They're truly mystifying, aren't they?
"Sh-shinju-san, how may I assist you?"
