(Purple) in Super<Matrix>natural
SAM : So, this scarecrow, from your musical, is it based on the one from the books ?
MARIE : No, I changed it. I got scared of a local legend, when I was a kid. There was this old creepy scarecrow, on an abandoned farm, oustide of town. Kids used to say, if it caught you, it would take you away.
MAEVE : Ok ! We're through the looking glass, here, people! Strike the wendigo set, let's prep the priests costumes.
(This is an Alice in Wonderland reference, but more importantly, gets referenced in The Matrix which will come back later)
So, Maeve gives us the heads up that things are off.
At this point we see:
Dean stays up top with a false!Sam.
Real Sam gets taken to the basement where he confronts Calliope.
Calliope in mythology and Borage (aka Starflower) don’t actually have anything to do with each other. At first, I just thought it a quirky writing choice because “purple means creativity.”
But then it hit me.
Yes, thank you Robbie&Phil…
Borage/Starflower is used In The Odyssey, as a key ingredient referenced in the mythical potion Nepenthe.
Nepenthe meaning "anti-sorrow." It chases away grief, anger, and painful memories, and fear, till only happiness remained…
Sounds like heaven….
PAMELA: You don’t believe me.
DEAN: No, I do, it’s just, you know. Spending eternity trapped in your own little universe while the angels run the show, that’s lonely. You know. That’s not Nirvana. That’s the Matrix.
PAMELA: I don’t know. Attic’s still better than the basement.
DEAN: Yeah, but (he holds his hand out) you know this place feels real, but it’s Memorex. Real is down there.
(5x16 Dark Side of the Moon)
And Regarding Dean 12x11 actually shows the real outcome of this.
(Along with tons of Matrix references. But that probably needs a whole separate post)
ROWENA: The two most powerful beings in the universe, wasting it on squabbling with each other. I thought, if—if they can't be happy, or at least satisfied, how can there be any hope for me?
DEAN: Why are you telling me this?
(Rowena smiles at him.)
ROWENA: Because I know you won't remember.
When Calliope is killed, the scarecrow under her possession blows up too. Covering (us) the audience in the mythical purple Nepenthe in goo. The happiness we’re seeing through this looking glass is off. We are seeing the Memorex ending.
And Sam down below looking up at the purple glow where Dean is….
SAM: You know, I gotta be honest. I was actually, uh, a little jealous at first…
DEAN: Of what? The curse that nearly killed me?
SAM: No, just, you know... some of the things we've done, we've had this weight for... forever. And seeing it gone, uh, you looked happy.
DEAN: Huh. Well, look, was it nice to drop our baggage? Yeah, maybe. Hell, probably. But it wasn't just the crap that got lost. I mean, it was everything. It was us, it was what we do, you know? All of it. So... that's what being happy looks like? I think I'll pass.
Poor Sam…Calliope says he, “Missed the show.” He tried to go up there…
But he was punished… and well…
Huh, Rat poison Hell… next to the Apple Pie Life.
Scarecrow: When given human sacrifice, can ensure the prosperity of its environment. Capable of possession. (SPN 1x11)
STACY: Try to understand. It’s our responsibility. And there’s just no other choice. There’s nobody else but you.
EMILY: I’m your family...
STACY: Sweetheart, that’s what sacrifice means. Giving up something you love for the greater good. The town needs to be safe. The good of the many outweighs the good of the one.
DEAN: I hope your apple pie is freakin’ worth it!
Oh Sam always stuck in basements…
