Spending the entire day crying and then crying yourself to sleep definitely wasn’t healthy. You couldn’t believe he had actually played you. The worst part was that he was the one who wanted you first. Looking back on it now, the whole thing felt ridiculous.
It had been three days since then, and you had barely left your bed. Well, aside from grabbing the food you ordered through DoorDash, brushing your teeth, and showering every now and then. Surprisingly, you were still managing the bare minimum.
You hadn’t meant to ignore Sae’s messages, either. He’d been texting you almost every day, asking if you were free or checking in to see how you were doing. But you never replied and you felt guilty about it.
Sae was your best friend. The last thing you wanted was for him to worry. You sat curled up on the couch, a box of Wingstop balanced on your lap as some random movie played on the television. Your eyes were puffy, your head hurt, and you felt exhausted despite doing absolutely nothing for the past three days.
Watching a movie seemed like the best way to distract yourself. Anything was better than staring at your phone and hoping for a message that wasn’t coming.
A part of you still wanted to believe there had been some mistake. Maybe he’d explain. Maybe he’d apologize. Maybe he’d tell you there was a reason. But deep down, you already knew none of that was going to happen.
God. If only you hadn’t been stupid enough to fall for him so easily.
You stared blankly at the television. Of course there was romance in this movie. Your chest tightened as the couple on screen held each other.
“You know I didn’t mean to hurt you,” the actor said. “My heart belongs to you. Only you.”
Immediately, your vision blurred. Before you even realized it, tears were rolling down your cheeks. Stupid movie. You grabbed the remote and shut the television off. Sniffling, you pulled the blanket over your head and curled into yourself. The faint scent lingering on the fabric only made your chest ache more.
You squeezed your eyes shut. Maybe if you slept, you wouldn’t have to think about it. Just as you started drifting off, a loud knock echoed through the apartment. You nearly jumped out of your skin.
“Delivery!” Another knock followed.
You frowned. Delivery? You hadn’t ordered anything. Confused, you pushed yourself off the couch and shuffled toward the door. Maybe one of the neighbors had gotten the wrong apartment number.
You unlocked the door and pulled it open. “Hi, sorry, I think you have the wrong—” Your words died in your throat. Standing in front of you was a pink-haired man who looked one inconvenience away from committing a felony.
“Sae?” For a moment, you genuinely thought he was the delivery driver.
Sae stared at you. Then he pinched the bridge of his nose. “For fuck’s sake.” Without waiting for permission, he stepped past you and into the apartment . “Why haven’t you been replying to me?” he asked. “I’ve been texting you for three days. You usually spam my phone so much that I have to mute you.”
You stared at him. Of course. Of course he’d show up. Because despite how cold he liked to act, Sae was always there when it mattered. You looked down at your feet. “I’m sorry,” you mumbled. “I’ve just been dealing with something.”
Sae’s irritation immediately faded. He took one look at your face and frowned. Honestly, you looked terrible. “You look like shit,” he said bluntly.
You laughed weakly. “Thanks.”
“No, seriously. What happened?”
You hesitated for a moment. Trying to explain it out loud somehow made everything feel more real. Slowly, you walked back toward the couch and sat down. Sae followed and sat across from you.
You stared at your hands. “It’s just…” You swallowed. “Something happened with a guy.”
And that was all it took because he tears came back instantly and your shoulders shook. “He blocked me, Sae.” Your voice cracked. “He led me on and then just disappeared. Like I didn’t matter at all.” You wiped furiously at your eyes. “He made me think he liked me,” you whispered. “I thought he actually felt the same way when we first had sex.”
Sae looked completely lost, not because he didn’t care. Because he genuinely had no idea what people were supposed to do in situations like this. Still, seeing you cry like that made something twist uncomfortably in his chest. “Y/n…”
You grabbed the front of his shirt which caused him to freeze. “I really liked him.”
Then, awkwardly, he wrapped his arms around you. The hug was stiff… awkward… and completely unnatural. But it was sincere.
“There,” he muttered. “See? Human comfort.”
You let out a broken laugh before immediately crying harder. “That was not comforting.”
“It was my best attempt…” He muttered.
Mascara stained the front of his white shirt and Sae looked down, looked away, then looked down again. He was trying very hard not to think about how expensive the shirt was. It wasn’t important! Definitely not important. Not like it had cost over two hundred dollars.
Eventually, you pulled away. The moment you noticed the stain, your eyes widened. “Oh my God.” You covered your mouth. “Sae, I’m so sorry.” And somehow you started crying again.
Sae groaned. How did people deal with this? He reached forward and grabbed your cheeks. “Hey.”
“Stop crying over a guy who looks like he’s fucked half the population.”
“Seriously.” Sae leaned back. “He looks exactly like the type.”
For a second, you just stared at him. Then an ugly laugh escaped your mouth. It was ridiculous. Completely ridiculous. But somehow his joke worked.
Seeing you laugh, even a little, made Sae relax. “Good,” he said. “Now get dressed.”
“We’re leaving.” He looked at his watch.
“We’re leaving.” He interrupted. His tone left no room for argument. “I’m meeting Rin later.” He stood up and pointed toward your room. “You’re coming with me.”
“No.” He said immediately.
You stared at him. “…You’re really not giving me a choice, are you?”
“Nope.” Sae shoved his hands into his pockets.“Now go get dressed before I drag you out looking like that.”
You rolled your eyes. Maybe getting out of the apartment wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. You nodded and pushed yourself off the couch. Sae was right. Sitting around crying wasn’t going to fix anything. Besides, why were you wasting tears on a guy who had practically chased after you first?
The thought still hurt, but it was easier to be annoyed than heartbroken. You headed to your room and shut the door behind you. For the first few minutes, you simply stared at your reflection in the mirror.
You looked awful. Your eyes were puffy from crying. Your hair was a mess. Even your skin looked dull. For a moment, you considered changing your mind and crawling right back into bed. But Sae was waiting. So instead, you forced yourself to get ready.
It took longer than usual. Not because you couldn’t find anything to wear, but because it felt difficult to care. Every outfit looked wrong. Every hairstyle looked stupid. Still, you tried.
You washed your face, fixed your makeup, changed into something comfortable, and spent a little extra time making yourself look presentable. By the time you finally stepped back into the living room, nearly thirty minutes had passed.
Sae was sitting on your couch with one ankle resting over his knee, scrolling through his phone.
“I’m ready,” you said quietly.
His eyes lifted from the screen. “God, you took forever.”
You rolled your eyes. “Nice to see you too.”
Sae stood and stretched his arms over his head.
“Come on. Rin’s waiting at the park.”
“Park?” you repeated as you grabbed your keys.
“The one we used to play at when we were kids.” He said.
You locked your apartment behind you and followed him toward the elevator. The ride down was quiet but neither of you really felt the need to fill the silence.
Once you reached the parking lot, Sae unlocked his car and climbed into the driver’s seat. You settled into the passenger seat and buckled yourself in.
The drive itself was peaceful. The city slowly gave way to quieter streets. The sunset painted the sky in shades of orange and pink, and for the first time in days your mind wasn’t completely occupied by Otoya.
The cold air drifting through the cracked window felt nice. Eventually, Sae pulled into a small parking lot beside a field. From here, you could already see someone in the distance. A soccer ball bounced effortlessly from foot to foot.
“Hurry up,” Sae muttered while stepping out. “Before he starts bitching.”
You laughed softly and followed him. “What exactly are we doing?” you asked.
Sae shoved his hands into his pockets. “Honestly? No clue.”
“He wanted to train…” Sae groaned.
You stared at him. “So your plan is to just wing it?”
By then, Rin had noticed the two of you. He trapped the ball beneath his foot and jogged over. “Sae.” Rin glanced at you before looking back at his brother. “I thought it was just going to be us. His gaze shifted toward you. “Not that I mind.”
You awkwardly pointed at yourself. “Wow. Thanks.”
Rin shrugged. “I just mean… won’t she get bored?”
Sae scratched the back of his neck. “Actually, I was thinking we’d hang out instead.”
Rin blinked. “But I brought all this stuff.” He gestured toward the equipment scattered around the field.
“We don’t always have to spend time together playing soccer,” Sae said, his voice softened. “I think we deserve to actually spend time together.”
Rin stared at him. Then his expression relaxed. “Oh.” A small smile appeared. “You should’ve just said that.”
“I wasn’t going to complain either way.” Rin pointed toward the equipment. “Could’ve saved me from carrying all that, though.”
You laughed. “I hope I’m not interrupting brother bonding time.”
Rin looked over at you. “No.” Then after a brief pause— “You seem easy to be around.”
Your eyes widened. “Really?”
“I see why Sae likes hanging out with you.” The second those words left his mouth, your entire mood changed.
“Oh my god.” Sae immediately groaned. “No.”
“You think I’m fun?” You said, looking at Rin with sparkles in your eyes.
“You think I’m easy to be around?”
“Y/n!” Sae called out again.
“You think I’m amazing?!”
Before Rin could answer, you grabbed his hand with both of yours. Rin stood completely still. Honestly, he looked more confused than anything. “Uh…”
Sae covered his face. “Rin, congratulations. You activated her.”
“You think I’m amazing?” you repeated.
“I didn’t say all that.” Rin looked away nervously.
“You implied it though!” You frowned.
“I really didn’t…?” He chuckled nervously.
Sae physically grabbed your shoulder and pulled you away. “Okay. That’s enough.”
You finally laughed for the first time in thrre days. “Sorry,” you said. “It’s just been a while since I felt this happy.”
Sae lit a cigarette. “The fuck?”
“Do I not make you happy?” He questioned.
You snorted and Rin laughed quietly. The three of you ended up standing around for a while, talking about random things. Nothing important really. Just small conversations. The sky gradually darkened above you, and then a cold gust of wind hit. Everyone immediately regretted being outside.
“Yeah, absolutely not.” Sae shivered. “Get back in the car.”
Within minutes, the three of you were back inside. Rin took the front seat while you sat in the back. The heater blasted warm air through the vents.
“Okay,” Rin said. “Where are we going?”
Sae looked at him then at you through the mirror then back at Rin. “I don’t know.”
You laughed. “Wow. I thought you had a plan.”
“You know I never plan anything.” Sae pointed toward you. “That’s why you’re usually the one deciding where we go.”
Before you could answer, Rin spoke up. “Can I ask something?”
“Depends.” You and Sae said at the same time.
“There was a rumor online.” Rin continued. “People think you two are dating.”
Sae groaned immediately. “Oh no.”
Then both you and Sae burst out laughing.
“Where did you even see that?” Sae laughed.
“Twitter.” Rin replied, confused on what was funny.
Sae groaned louder. “Of course it was Twitter.” He rubbed his forehead. “That app is filled with idiots.”
“So you’re not dating?” Rin asked.
“No.” Sae pointed between the two of you “We’re friends.”
“Close friends,” you corrected. “If it wasn’t for me, your life would be boring.”
“You guess?” You glared at him through the mirrior.
“I know.” He sighed, “Is that better Ms. L/n?”
“There we go.” You smiled.
Rin shook his head. “You two are weird.”
“Thank you,” you replied.
Sae sighed. “Now please tell me where we’re going.”
You immediately sat up. “Oh! I have an idea—an amusement park.”
There was a long silence, and both brothers looked concerned.
“What?” You replied, not sure what was the issue.
“It’s almost night.” Sae turned his neck to look at you.
“So?” You rolled your eyes.
“Do you seriously think an amusement park is open right now?—“Twenty minutes later, Sae was following your GPS anyway. And twenty minutes after that, the three of you found yourselves in the middle of nowhere. There were trees that surrounded the parking lot and warning signs were scattered everywhere. And it was hella dark.
And the entire place looked like the setting of a horror movie. Rin stared out the window. “Cool.”
“What?” Sae asked concerningly. “This is where we die! NOT cool.”
You groaned. “Can you stop?”
“I’m joking, not cool because—“ Rin pointed toward the dark woods. “They’ll find our bodies in a lake in there.”
Sae slowly turned toward him. “What is wrong with you?”
“I’m just preparing for reality, unlike you two.” Rin locked his side of the door.
“You need help.” Sae shook his head and unlocked all the doors.
You pinched the bridge of your nose. “Guys. Just because it looks weird doesn’t mean it’s dangerous.”
Neither brother looked convinced At all. Suddenly, Rin’s phone started vibrating nonstop. The screen lit up once. Then twice. Then again.
Sae glanced over from the driver’s seat and raised an eyebrow. “Who’s blowing up your phone this late?” he asked. “Your boyfriend?”
“Dunno.” He shoved his hands into his pockets. “Ignore it. Let’s keep walking.” Clearly, he had no interest in checking whatever it was. The problem was that the notifications wouldn’t stop.
Rin let out a long sigh. “Jesus Christ…” Finally, he pulled his phone out and unlocked it.
“Group chat,” he said after a few seconds.
“They’re talking about going to the beach in a few days.”
Your eyes immediately lit up. “A beach trip?” you gasped. “Sae, we should go too.”
Sae shrugged. “I don’t mind.”
“Actually, wait.” Rin said and looked around. “I need proof that Im with you guys.”
Sae scanned the nearly empty parking lot.
“There isn’t even anyone here to take a picture.”
“What are you talking about?” you asked.
You pointed toward the far end of the lot “There’s literally two people right there.”
Sae followed your finger and his expression immediately changed. “What the fuck?”
“This parking lot was empty ten seconds ago.” Sae said.
You exchanged a glance with Rin. “You’re being paranoid.”
“I’m serious.” Sae tried to sound convincing.
“You always say that.” Rin scoffed.
“No, seriously. There was nobody here.” The two strangers were already walking across the lot.
You snorted. “Get a load of this guy.”
Rin looked equally unconcerned. Sae stared at both of you like you were the crazy ones.
Before he could argue further, you waved at the strangers. “Excuse me!”
The two men looked over. One of them raised a hand. “Yeah?”
“Would you mind taking a picture for us?” You asked politely.
“Sure.” The taller one accepted Sae’s phone and gestured for the three of you to stand together.
You immediately grabbed Rin’s arm and pulled him closer. Rin looked mildly annoyed but Sae looked even more annoyed. Just as the picture was about to be taken, the second stranger casually walked over and stood beside Sae like he belonged there.
Sae slowly turned his head. “…Why are you in the picture?”
The stranger shrugged. “Thought it’d be funny.”
“It won’t.” Sae narrowed his eyes.
You elbowed Sae. “Be nice. They’re helping us.”
Sae looked like he wanted to argue. Instead, he forced a smile that looked more painful than pleasant.
The flash went off then another picture then another. As the stranger stood beside him, he suddenly leaned closer. Just enough for Sae to hear him. “I know you.”
Sae froze. The man immediately stepped back as if nothing had happened. The strangers handed the phone back. Then they simply walked away into the amusement park.
Sae stood there staring after them. “…Okay.”
You and Rin had already started walking.
“Did you guys not hear that?” Sae called out.
“He said he knows me.” Sae said.
You stared. “Well… You’re famous.”
“That’s not the weird part!” Sae raised his arms up.
“Then what’s the weird part?” You questioned.
“The way he said it?!” Was Sae going crazy? Was he more crazier than THE Bachira?
Rin looked completely unimpressed as he sent the photo in the groupchat. “You sound insane.”
“I know what I heard.” He shouted.
Neither of you looked convinced but you and Rin walked away from the Sae.
Sae ran a hand through his hair and laughed nervously. “Great. Fantastic.” By the time he caught up, you had already reached the front gate.
You looked up at the giant sign above the entrance. Then your smile slowly disappeared.“…Oh.”
The three of you stared at it for several seconds. Then Sae let out the biggest sigh of the night. “I fucking knew it.”
You scratched the back of your neck. “Okay… that’s weird.”
“We drove all the way out here. FOR NO FUCKING REASON?” Sae was technically pacing back and forth.
“It said it was open online.” You said, frowning.
Rin glanced around. “Didn’t those two guys go inside?”
“That’s what I was thinking,” you said. “Maybe they’re security?”
Sae threw both hands into the air. “Why is nobody listening to me?”
Neither of you answered. You were both too busy staring through the locked gates.
Sae pinched the bridge of his nose. “I think we should leave.”
No response. “Seriously.” Still nothing. “Let’s go get food?”
You immediately turned around. “That’s a great idea.”
Sae stared blankly. “Oh, now you two want to listen.” Neither of you acknowledged him.
The three of you headed back toward the parking lot. By the time you reached the car, Rin was already texting in the group chat again.
You climbed into the back seat while Sae got behind the wheel. A few moments later, the engine started. As Sae backed out of the parking space, he glanced at you through the mirror. “Y/n.”
“Where did you even find this place?” He asked, staring at you.
You hesitated. “…Instagram.”
The silence that followed was immediate.
Sae slowly nodded. “Okay.” You already knew that tone. “Never do that again.”
“No. It was literally closed! Who knew if those two guys were even real.” Sae said.
You crossed your arms. “You’re no fun.”
Sae ignored you and focused on the road. A few minutes passed before he noticed Rin had gone unusually quiet.
The younger Itoshi was staring at his phone and his expression looked irritated.
Sae glanced over. “What?”
Rin locked his screen. “Nothing.”
“That doesn’t look like nothing.” Sae pushed further.
“Just someone saying stupid shit.” Rin said with an annoyed tone.
Sae considered asking another question. Then decided against it. Whatever was happening in that group chat could stay in that group chat.“Can’t wait to get out of this place,” he muttered.
The headlights swept across the empty road as the car finally left the parking lot behind. The ride to the burger place only took about twenty minutes, but the rest of the drive was quiet.
You rested your head against the cold window and watched the city pass by in a blur of streetlights and traffic. Unfortunately, that only gave your mind room to wander. Without meaning to, your thoughts drifted back to Otoya. The way he always managed to make you laugh. The endless phone calls that somehow lasted until three in the morning. The stupid messages he’d send throughout the day just to annoy you. For a few hours, hanging out with Sae and Rin had helped you forget about him. But only for a few hours.
No matter how hard you tried, he still lingered somewhere in the back of your mind. You didn’t even realize you had arrived until Sae opened his door and stepped out of the car.
“Hurry up,” he said, glancing back at you.
“Oh.” You blinked and quickly unbuckled your seatbelt before climbing out after them.
The restaurant sat on the corner of a busy street, glowing with bright neon signs that reflected against the windows. The moment Sae pulled the door open, the smell of grilled burgers and fries hit you immediately.
Your stomach growled. “Okay, maybe this was a good idea,” you admitted.
“Obviously,” Sae replied.
Rin pointed toward an empty booth near the front window. “Should we sit there?”
“Works for me,” Sae said.
The three of you slid into the booth. Through the glass window, you could see cars pulling in and out of the parking lot while headlights swept across the pavement.
You already knew what you wanted to order, so the three of you spent the next few minutes talking about random things while waiting.
Eventually, a waitress approached the table with a notebook in hand.
“Hi! Welcome to Fumi’s Burgers! Today we have a special deal on our burgers and—“ She suddenly froze and her eyes widened. “Oh my God.” You already knew where this was going. “THE Itoshi Sae and Itoshi Rin?!”
Rin immediately sighed and Sae rubbed his forehead awkwardly.
The waitress practically looked ready to pass out. “I’m so sorry,” she blurted out. “I’m a huge fan. Like—actually a huge fan.”
The poor girl took a deep breath and tried to compose herself. “Ahem. Anyways! We also have our new Blue Lock Meal promotion today. Can I start you guys off with drinks, or are you ready to order?”
“Blue Lock Meal?” Rin repeated with visible disappointment.
You immediately sat up. “Sae.”
“No.” Sae said immediately.
“Sae, we have to get the Blue Lock Meal! As a sign of appreciation for your little brother,” you added dramatically.
Sae stared at you for a second before nodding. “You know what? That’s a great idea.”
Sae looked back at the waitress. “We’ll take three Blue Lock Meals. Extra bacon.”
The waitress looked thrilled. “Coming right up! Three Blue Lock Meals with extra bacon.” “And drinks?”
“Let me guess, you have matching drinks that come with the meal too or what?” Rin said sarcastically but Sae elbowed him after.
The waitress looked at him nervously, “That is… correct! The drink represents the amazing famous Isagi Yoichi!” “It’s basically just sprite mixed with pink lemonade!”
“Isagi?” Rin’s head snapped up.
“There are other drink recommendations based off of Bachira, Reo, Nagi–”
“Give me that one. I don’t care about the other stupid players.”
The waitress blinked. “Just that fast?”
“Yes.” Rin replied, as he fixed his posture.
You immediately covered your mouth to stop yourself from laughing.
The waitress quickly wrote it down. “And for you two?”
“Water. Lemon slices if possible,” Sae answered.
“Perfect! I’ll be right back.” She said, and proceeded to leave.
The second she left, Rin leaned back in his seat. “This is stupid.”
You immediately pointed at him. “Aww. Rin wanted the Isagi drink.”
“No I didn’t.” He mumbled.
“Because it sounded normal.” He glared at you. “Imagine what the fucking Bachira drink was.”
“Mhm…” You knew he was only lying to save himself from embarrassment.
Sae glanced up from his phone. “It’s pretty cute, Rin.”
Rin looked personally offended, faced his direction at the window. “Both of you are annoying.”
Your laughter trailed off as you absentmindedly spun a ketchup bottle across the table while the conversation faded into background noise. The music playing through the restaurant speakers suddenly seemed louder. Or maybe your thoughts were. Before you knew it, memories began creeping back in.
The way he stared at you as if you were his only main focus. The way his hot breath touched your neck or even the small kisses he planted onto your shoulder. You shifted in your seat and stared down at the table.
Don’t think about him. Think about literally anything else.
Your eyes wandered around the restaurant. Families! Groups of friends! Couples…? Way too many couples.
Your attention settled on a younger couple sitting a few booths away. They were laughing over something on one of their phones, completely caught up in their own little world. You chest began to hurt and you looked away immediately.
You didn’t respond but it was clear your focus was on somewhere else.
This time you jumped at the loud call. “Huh?” You said.
Both Sae and Rin were staring at you. Sae then frowned at you. “Are you okay?”
“What?” You asked, confused or mostly embarrassed.
“You’re crying.” He muttered.
Your hand immediately touched your cheek. You froze. Sure enough, your face was wet. “Oh.” Heat rushed to your face. “Sorry.” You quickly wiped your eyes. “I didn’t realize.”
Rin glanced toward the couple you had been staring at before looking back at you. His expression softened slightly. “Is it about him?”
“Him?” you repeated. Then you remembered. Right. They knew exactly who you were talking about. You looked down. “Yeah.” You answered, “Otoya.” Silence followed after.
Sae only sighed before running his hands over his hair.
Rin scratched the back of his neck. “No wonder he was saying all that.”
Your head immediately lifted. “What was he saying?”
Rin instantly regretted opening his mouth.“Nothing…”
“Seriously Sae? I dont want to hurt her feelings. We’re having a great time.” Rin said.
You looked equally curious now. “What did he say?”
Rin refused to look at you, but the longer you stared at him made him uncomfortable. “Fine.” He sat back in his seat.
“Look, Otoya was just being stupid. We were talking about the plans of the beach but he mentioned how he was excited to go to the beach just for the girls. I thought it was weird because he was completely obsessed with you. I didnt butt in until my name was brought up and I was clearly busy with the two of you earlier. So once I told them all I was with you he started getting all defensive…” He said awkwardly. “…and accused you of sleeping with Sae...”
Your expression flattened.
There was silence. Then a loud laugh came from you. Well it was more of a concerning laugh. “Me?” you wheezed. Rin and Sae exchanged a look and forced a laugh with you.
“ME and SAE?” You started laughing harder.
Sae stopped laughing and looked offended now. “Why am I catching strays?” “Okay it’s not funny anymore.”
Neither of them seemed convinced that your laughter was genuine. But eventually, you wiped your eyes. “Even if I was sleeping with Sae, why would it matter?” You continued. “Suddenly he’s so worried about what I do.”
“Rin, I’ll pay you to beat the fuck out of him.” You looked directly at Rin.
The waitress then came back with the three meals and placed them onto the table.
Rin stared at you for a second and then proceeded to scratch his face. “I guess? If you want, I’ll do it for free.” Rin replied.
The waitress didn’t want to butt in, so she focused on Sae who seemed he wasn’t involved. “Any straws?”
“No, that’ll be it.” Sae replied, ignoring the tension happening there.
“Alright… so, that’ll be 25.40!”
Sae nodded, and pulled out a wallet. He placed two twenty dollar bills. “Keep the change. You’ve been an amazing waitress tonight.”
“Ah! Thank you Mr. Itoshi! Its been a pleasure, please have an amazing rest of your night.” She then left.
Sae then looked back at you two, “Rin you’ll be in deep shit.” He said, eating a fry.
“It’s clear how much of an issue he had been to the majority of us. Someone has to do it otherwise.” Rin muttered as he stared at the oddly… blue burger bun that had a number 11 carved into it. “Okay, is all of this Isagi themed?” Rin questioned.
You laughed nervously, you didn’t expect him to agree. But you guessed there was no getting him out of this. “Guess so? Is your boyfriend that better than everyone?”
“I mean yes, except for me of course.” Rin took a bite of his blue burger.
“Sure… also how are you getting out of trouble?” Sae said.
“The real question is, Sae how are YOU getting Rin out of trouble?” You joked.
“Me? Fuck that.” He scoffed, “That fucking bowl cut man scares the shit out of me.” Sae stared at you.
“Look, he’s literally… very… chill.” Rin said. “Well, to those he likes.”
Sae rolled his eyes and groaned. “Oh yeah that sounds very convincing.”
You couldn’t help but giggle, atleast they made things better for you. “You guys are dumb.” You laughed.
“Oh says the dumb one? The one who let some guy fuck after like—a few months?” Sae muttered.
You blinked multiple times, “Mind you he was—let me just shut up. Otoya is dead to me either ways.”
“Sure.” He said sarcastically.
You, Sae, and Rin spent the rest of the time chatting and eating. Afterwards, you all went back to Sae’s car.
Rin spoke about his time in Bluelock and how he somehow asked Isagi to be his boyfriend. Sae then spoke about the fact that he’ll be going back to Spain in a few months for some “unfinished business.”
“Okay, Y/n, we’ll drop you off first,” Sae said, reaching over to lower the music.
You looked up from your phone and frowned. “Aw, and here I thought we still had more things to do.”
A small laugh escaped him. “As much as I’d like to keep hanging out, I still have to drive Rin back to where he’s staying.”
“No, no, I get it.” You waved him off. “I was kidding.”
“Don’t worry, Y/n.” Rin glanced over his shoulder. “We’ll hang out again soon. I still need to go over the beach plans with everyone anyway.”
You gave him a thumbs-up from the backseat.“Good. Then make sure to tell me everything.”
“Sae can do that,” Rin said.
“Yeah, yeah,” Sae muttered.
The rest of the drive passed quietly. The radio played softly in the background while the city lights blurred past the windows. Eventually, familiar buildings came into view.
A few minutes later, Sae pulled up in front of your apartment building and shifted the car into park.
“Well,” he said, resting an arm on the steering wheel, “here we are.”
You unbuckled your seatbelt and grabbed your purse. Before getting out, you paused and looked at both of them. “Seriously, thanks.”
Sae raised an eyebrow. “For what?”
You smiled. “For today. For dragging me out of my apartment. It really helped.”
Sae looked away toward the windshield. “Yeah. Try not to lock yourself inside for another three days.”
You rolled your eyes. “No promises.”
“Annoying.” Sae muttered.
You laughed before opening the door “Goodnight, guys.” You stepped out, shut the door behind you, and headed toward the apartment entrance.
Sae didn’t drive away immediately. Instead, he waited until he saw you disappear through the building doors. Only then did he let out a quiet sigh and glance at Rin.
His younger brother was already looking down at his phone, typing something… again. Him and that damn phone.
“Who’s texting again?” Sae asked.
Rin barely looked up. “Isagi.”
Sae groaned immediately. “Of course it is.”
“He wants me back at Blue Lock.” Rin muttered.
“Right now?” He looked at him confused.
“Apparently they’re trying to figure out the beach plans.” Rin locked his phone and shoved it into his pocket. “Mind dropping me off?”
“Yeah, sure.” Sae started the car again and shook his head. “God, I really didn’t want to drive all the way out there tonight.”
The drive to Blue Lock took nearly an hour and a half. About twenty minutes in, Rin had already fallen asleep. Sae glanced over occasionally to make sure he hadn’t somehow rolled into the center console.
The rest of the drive was quiet. Without the conversation from earlier, his thoughts kept drifting back to you. He didn’t like seeing you like that. It bothered him more than he wanted to admit.
Eventually, the familiar Blue Lock facility appeared in the distance. The massive building sat in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by darkness and empty land.
Sae had almost forgotten how isolated the place was. As he approached the gate, a security guard stepped forward but Sae rolled down the window.
“Good evening. Do you have any business—”The guard paused and his eyes widened. “Ah—Itoshi Sae.” He straightened immediately. “Sorry about that.”
“Just dropping off my brother.”
“Funny. A lot of the players have been coming tonight.” He stepped aside and gestured toward the road ahead. “You’re good to go.”
“Thanks.” Sae drove through the gate and up the long hill leading to the facility. A few minutes later, he pulled over near the entrance and turned off the engine. Then he looked over at Rin, who was still asleep.
“Rin.” He said, but there was no response. “Rin.” Still nothing… Sae reached over and shoved his shoulder “Wake up. We’re here.”
Rin groaned and slowly opened his eyes. “…Fuck.” He stretched his arms above his head before unbuckling his seatbelt.
“Hurry up and get out,” Sae said. “I’m trying to go home.”
“Nice to see you’re still a terrible brother.” Rin yawned.
Rin sighed dramatically and opened the door. Before leaving, he paused. “Thanks for the ride.”
“And the food.” Rin continued
“Sure.” Sae had his palms on the steering wheel.
“And—” Rin almost continued.
Rin snorted. “Whatever.” He stepped out and shut the door. “See you later.”
“Hopefully not.” The second the door closed, Sae drove off.
Rin watched the taillights disappear down the road. “How rude,” he muttered.
Turning around, he looked toward the brightly lit building. And here he thought he wouldn’t be back until next week. “What a hassle.” The words left his mouth before he immediately cringed.
“God.” Who did he think he was? Nagi? Shoving his hands into his pockets, Rin headed inside. The hallways were mostly quiet, but he could already hear distant voices echoing through the building. Which meant everyone was probably gathered in one place. The cafeteria? Unfortunately.
Following the noise, he made his way down the hallway. The closer he got, the louder it became. Rin stopped outside the doors and rubbed his forehead. He had only been back for five minutes. And he already wanted to leave. Slowly, he pushed the door open and stepped inside, deciding not to announce his presence just yet.
The air in the room had been thin for hours, stretched tight like a wire about to snap. Bachira bounced on the balls of his feet, energy crackling off him like static electricity, his eyes too bright for the hour. “Guysss!! Are we missing anyone!?”
Chigiri sat cross legged on the low couch, fingers working through the last section of his hair with practiced ease, weaving it into a neat braid. He didn’t look up. “Bachira, please. How are you still this wired at two in the morning?”
Bachira grinned wide enough to show every tooth, his voice lilting and manic. “My monster’s wide awake! It keeps whispering that something fun’s about to happen—”
Otoya cut him off with a lazy scoff from the opposite side of the room. He lounged between Yukimiya and Karasu, one ankle hooked over his knee, posture deliberately relaxed. “No one gives a shit about the crazy shit you see, Bachira.”
Isagi’s soccer ball stopped spinning on his toe. He lowered his foot, the ball thudding softly against the floor, and his gaze locked onto Otoya. “Shut the fuck up, Otoya. You always gotta insert yourself where nobody asked.”
Otoya’s smirk sharpened, a blade glinting under fluorescent lights. “Just because everyone kisses your ass doesn’t mean I have to listen.”
Hiori’s voice sliced through the rising tension. “Otoya, shut the fuck up. Now.”
Isagi stepped closer, ball tucked under one arm and his jaw tight. “No, Hiori—it’s fine. If he’s got something to say, let him say it. Fucking. Say it.”
Bachira’s shoulders curled inward. “Guys…? Ego’s gonna be pissed if we start something. Please, let's just—”
Karasu shot him a sharp, silencing look. “Bachira. Shh. Don’t.”
Otoya leaned forward, elbows on knees and stare locked on Isagi. “Remember how you said I’m all bark and no bite? You’re lucky your boyfriend isn’t here to defend your gay ass. Where is he, anyway? Did he finally realize what a whiny little bitch you are?”
The room went dead silent that you could hear the hum of the vending machine down the hall.
Yukimiya’s mouth fell open, his hand pausing mid-gesture while Hiori stood up so fast the couch cushion squeaked and backed toward the wall, eyes wide. “I don’t know him,” Hiori muttered under his breath.
Otoya raised both hands in mock surrender, the smirk still plastered on his face. Then he lunged forward, faster than anyone expected, and grabbed Isagi’s face.
His fingers dug into his cheeks, squeezing hard enough to leave red marks. “I mean, look—it’s written all over his face. You can smell it on him. Like a little fag.”
Isagi shoved him hard, stumbling back. “Don’t fucking touch me!”
But Otoya seized the sprout of hair on Isagi’s head and yanked, twisting him around to face Karasu, forcing Isagi to crane his neck at an awkward angle. “Don’t you think so, Karasu? Am I lying?”
Karasu’s eyes flicked past Otoya’s shoulder to the far corner of the room. His face paled. His voice dropped. “Dude, you’re going too far. I wouldn’t—just stop. Please.”
Otoya laughed, the sound ugly and brittle. “Stop? I’m just getting started.”
Footsteps pounded across the floor. Then Rin’s fist connected with Otoya’s jaw before Otoya could even turn his head.
The impact snapped Otoya’s head sideways with a sickening crack; blood sprayed from his split lip. Rin didn’t pause. He grabbed two fistfuls of Otoya’s shirt and slammed him to the floor, knees pinning his hips, the full weight of his rage pressing down.
Isagi shouted, “Rin! Rin, stop!”
Rin didn’t look up. His knuckles were white and his breath ragged. He drove another punch into Otoya’s cheek.
“Fucking bitch! Didn’t you hear him tell you to let go? Didn’t you hear him say no?” A third punch split Otoya’s eyebrow and warm blood coated Rin’s knuckles, trickling down his wrist.
Otoya bucked, trying to roll free, his shoes scraping against the floor. “Crazy asshole—get the fuck off me! Get off!”
Rin’s forearm pressed across Otoya’s throat, heavy enough that every breath rasped, every word came out strangled. “Yet you also insulted him,” Rin growled, “You think that shit’s funny? Calling him a faggot?”
Otoya wheezed, “It was a j-joke! Just a joke, you psycho!”
Rin’s eyes burned darker onto Otoya. “Oh? Was it also a joke when you fucked with her feelings? When you made her cry? When you told her she meant everything and then walked away like and lied?”
Otoya’s pupils blew wide. The room seemed to tilt around him. He stopped struggling and his body going limp under Rin’s weight.
Chigiri’s voice cut through the silence, sharp and desperate. “Someone get Ego! Now!”
Karasu and Hiori grabbed Rin’s shoulders, but Rin didn’t move. He stayed straddling Otoya’s limp body. His hands trembled, still clenched around the fabric of Otoya’s shirt.
Rin took a ragged breath, and his voice dropped to a whisper. “She wanted me to tell you something. She said you’re dead to her. Dead. Do you understand?”
The words landed like another blow. Otoya stopped struggling entirely. His chest heaved once, twice. Then a broken, wet laugh bubbled out of him, “Dead… to her… that’s… that’s funny…”
His hand twitched, reaching toward his own face, smearing blood across his cheek. He stared up at the ceiling, vision blurring, ears ringing. He thought about regret.
What was he thinking? Did he think you’d actually be nice to him? That you’d still love him? That you’d forgive him? Were you really dead to him? Forever? Was he regretting it now? About all the things he’d said that he couldn’t take back?
And then he laughed again, softer this time. But Rin’s fist came down one last time. Otoya’s head snapped back against the floor and his eyes rolled back.
