The relief depicts a Greek soldier in combat, sword raised to kill an unseen enemy. The detail depicting the soldier and their armour suggests in had been part of an Athenian state memorial to the dead. The figures wears a body molded cuirass and a Corinthian style crested helmet, worn on the forehead in the heroic style to show off their face. Athens during this time was part of the League of Corinth under the rule of the Kingdom of Macedon. Athenian armies had suffered heavy defeats from the Spartans and their allies in the previous century and the Macedonian forces of this time. Depictions of soldiers in Classical armour was perhaps a way of holding on to previous victories.
