How to Fix Underwriting
1. Slow down at emotionally important moments.
Big emotions need space to land. If a scene feels rushed, pause the plot briefly to show how the moment affects the character.
2. Add reactions, not explanations.
Instead of explaining what a character feels, show it through physical responses, hesitation, or small actions that reveal emotion naturally.
3. Ground every scene in the senses.
If a scene feels thin, add one or two sensory detailsāsound, texture, smell, or temperatureāto make the moment feel lived-in.
4. Let thoughts interrupt action.
A line of internal thought can deepen a scene without slowing it too much. Thoughts show stakes, fear, longing, or conflict beneath the action.
5. Expand consequences, not events.
You donāt need more things to happenāyou need to show what matters. Focus on how events change relationships, decisions, or self-perception.
6. Strengthen setting where emotion peaks.
The environment should echo or contrast the emotion of the scene. Setting is not decorationāitās emotional reinforcement.
7. Add specific details instead of general ones.
Underwriting often relies on vague language. Swap āthey arguedā for one sharp line of dialogue or a specific breaking point.
8. Let dialogue breathe.
Short dialogue exchanges without pauses can feel flat. Add beatsāsilence, gestures, interruptionsāto give the conversation weight.
9. Show transitions between scenes.
If scenes jump too quickly, readers feel disoriented. A brief transition helps establish time, mood, and emotional continuity.
10. Clarify stakes early in the scene.
If readers donāt know what can be lost, scenes feel empty. Make sure the character wants something specific and fears losing it.
11. Use the āwhat are they feelingĀ right now?ā check.
After each major beat, ask what emotion is dominant in that moment. If itās missing on the page, the scene is likely underwritten.
12. Expand scenes that feel ātoo clean.ā
If a scene resolves too neatly or quickly, it probably needs more tension. Messy emotions and unresolved feelings add depth.

Reblogs in a chain now get their own notes
The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve.Ā
Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, youāll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.
If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.
Past notes will stay on the original post ā we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.
This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out ā stay tuned!
Itās very clear that you all have strong feelings about Tumblr and about this change. We hear you. The passion people have for how Tumblr works is one of the things that makes this place special.
As this rolls out over the next few days and you explore it, weāll keep reading your replies and reblogs, so please keep sharing your questions, concerns, and ideas.
Your creativity has always been the heart of Tumblr, whether youāre the original poster or adding something brilliant in the reblogs,Ā and nothing about this change is meant to limit that.
If youād like to talk directly beyond the comments, leave a reply and weāll follow up with as many of you as we can. We want to work with you to make Tumblr better.
Tumblr is (or was) about community, about sharing ideas with others and building upon them, about collaborative effort, about the joy of human connection, about blogging a song one line per person and collectively cheering when the post is complete
This update of yours completely goes against that. It's yet another strategy focused solely on individualism, and god knows we already have plenty of that in society. It's not why people use Tumblr, in this world filled with giant social media companies fighting each other by trying to be the biggest, smartest, most personalized option in the field. We don't want that. If we wanted that, we wouldn't be on Tumblr anymore
We want a platform that facilitates connection instead of isolation, collaboration instead of individualism. So stop trying to divide us

my dadāalso a writerācame to visit, and i mentioned that the best thing to come out of the layoff is that iām writing again. he asked what i was writing about, and i said what i always do:Ā āoh, just fanfic,ā which is code forĀ āletās not look at this too deeply because iām basically just making action figures kiss in text formā andĀ āthis awkward follow-up question is exactly why i donāt call myself a writer in public.ā
he said,Ā āyou have to stop doing that.ā
āi know, i know,ā because itās even more embarrassing to beĀ embarrassed about writing fanfic, considering how many posts iāve reblogged in its defense.
but i misunderstood his original question:Ā āfanfic is just the genre. i asked what youāre writing about.āĀ
i did the conversational equivalent of a spinning wheel cursor for at least a minute. i started peeling back the setting and the characters, the fic challenge and the specific episode the story jumps off from, and it was one of those slow-dawning light bulb moments. āiām writing about loneliness, and who we are in the absence of purpose.ā
as, i imagine, are a lot of people right now, who probably also donāt realize theyāre writing an existential diary in the guise of getting television characters to fuck.Ā
āthatāsĀ what youāre writing.Ā the rest is just how you get there, and how you get it out into the world.Ā was richard iii really about richard the third? would shakespeare have gotten as many people to see it if it wasnāt a story they knew?ā
so, my friends: what are you writing about?
Wellā¦.. fuckā¦now that you put it that wayā¦.
i almost finished 300,000 words before i realized i was essentially writing about how hard it is to make friends after age 35. and how much i need to.
Iāve been stalled for nearly a year but Iāve been writing about found family and escaping your trauma and coming into yourself as a young adult in a life you never expected to have, and Iām writing about love and loyalty and letting yourself heal from the things that have hurt you, and Iām writing about identity and how to find yours in the face of discovering youāre not the person you didnāt years thinking you were.
ā¦. Holy shit man I donāt know what to do with this knowledge.
Iām writing about the impulse to build our future into a better world, even as the past can hold us back, and fear and greed can destroy it.
Iām writing about the woes of tethering yourself to the person/power that āsavedā you and devoting yourself entirely to one thing, even if it causes you insurmountable amounts of pain and anguish and isolates you from the rest of the world.
Iām writing about reclaiming your destiny, your future, a search for safety, and being what you want to be no matter what that looks like. Also how affection and attraction can be expressed in unconventional ways.
I'm writing about learning that some people will love you unconditionally and that it's okay to ask for help and let them take care of you.

What? I can ship both Amethyst Ocean and this. There's no rule in Walker's rulebook that says I can't. XD (Wish their romance lasted just a little bit longer. They would have had a fun Sly Cooper/Carmelita Fox like dynamic. š)

āyouāre a writer, right?ā
me, staring at the one sentence iāve managed to add in the last hour and the 12 open tabs on the specifics of shoes in 1845 Ireland: In theory.
No, no, and NO.
AO3 does not live in āthe cloudā because that is other peopleās computers, and other peopleās computers are vulnerable to censorship.
AO3 is on its own computers. It does still have to be housed somewhere, and I suppose a determined enough hater could try to find that place and go after it, but itās a lot harder than sending spurious complaints to Amazon or whomever going āBadWrong things are hosted on your cloud service!ā
Owning the servers is a core tenet of OTW/AO3.
Warming up a new database serverā¦.
When people involved with AO3 talk about āthe cost of serversā they donāt mean āthe cost to pay Amazon for space on their servers.ā They mean, like, the cost to physically own them, and eventually replace them with new ones. And the operating costs to run them.
AO3 is not āin the cloud.ā AO3 is stored on physical machines that the OTW owns.
While this is not a solution that can work for everyone who wants to deal with controversial content, it is why AO3ple sneer at alt-righters who complain about getting thrown off hosting platforms.
