There is the context of him being mostly non-verbal and the fact he was so moved and emotional he was able to circumvent it for that moment, but yeah people not knowing how to word and contextualize that situation, or just being positively-ableist, fucking sucks.

It's an understandable mistake, but he actually isn't non-verbal.

Non-verbal Learning Disorder (which is poorly named on multiple fronts, as it's also not its own disorder, but rather a proposed categorisation for what is effectively a specific symptom cluster) is a term applied to people whose core deficits impact their non-verbal skills. In fact, many people with NVLD have advanced verbal intelligence/skills, which results in some of their other deficits being dismissed or overlooked.

I haven't personally had this term applied to me, but given that I have ADHD, autism, dyscalculia, and dyspraxia, which are all overlapping disorders that are affiliated with NVLD (which, again, isn't officially a distinct thing; it's not in the DSM-5), I wouldn't be surprised if I qualify, as I'm highly verbal but have deficits with spatial awareness, fine motor coordination, processing numerical information, etc.

So anyway, yeah, there's really no reason to bring his ND into this, because a teenage boy crying because he's welling with pride and love doesn't need to be explained away!
