as you get older years get shorter because every year is a smaller piece of your life. so it's half a lifetime from 10 until 20, but by 40 the years are whipping by and it feels like decades are gone in a snap. these days when i look back seven or eight years it's hard to make myself believe that was more than a year or two ago - i just can't believe how it flies.
so i just know when ilya said "summer before," yuna's Museum of Shane mom brain took four seconds to scan everything that happened the summer before his rookie season, and pinpointed that ccm commercial in her mind one half second later. she not only remembers that it happened and when, she remembers how the two of them giggled during the shoot and how frustrated she was with shane for being so immature in one of his first major brand spots. she thought it must've been rozanov's fault, knocking shane off his game somehow to sabotage him. that's part of the reason she brought the reeboks up with shane again, to remind him of his responsibilities - and she remembers how he was distracted watching ilya skate then, too, how unlike him that was. And she'll certainly remember bumping into Ilya in the elevator that night, and him saying "this is going up"
and that means, at some point, she gets to really realize that she was there. when they first connected, when they started tumbling. she watched shane, usually so professional and serious, get distracted and flustered by the boy he liked. she saw them both just a thousand percent unable to keep it together around each other, three seconds of eye contact so exciting and unsteadying that they were useless afterward and couldn't even continue the shoot. and it's like, yeah, maybe it makes her squirm a little to think of their relationship being mainly lovers for however long and what that means about the buttoned-up son she thought she knew, but ultimately she'll remember that she was there and she saw it happen. she was there when her boys started to fall in love.
