I do think people really whittle down Simon's relationship with Eden either by making him a total believer or a total nonbeliever.
Simon didnβt choose Eden but none of us choose our homeland. It is his great trauma and great comfort. His tattoo is a scar but when he sees it carved into the ship, sees proof that one of his people lived and died there, he stops to stare. The comfort of rhe pendant; he doesn't hesitate to wear it. When it breaks, it's both his fracturing mental state and his fractured belief. He prays to the same mother who put a knife in his hands. One day the people on Mars's space station turred around and their home was gone and they spent the rest of their lives trying to find some kind of meaning in the lack. How many parents do you think sent their children to war because they wanted them to die fighting for something instead of by starving? How Simon fought his brothers because he wanted to live and they didn't?

WE HAVE CONFIRMATION FROM THE MAKEUP TEAM OF IRON LUNG THAT SIMON WAS TURNING INTO ONE OF THE BLOOD EELS!!
I can be trusted with the fictional character. I Promise.
I lied. Fuck itβs dire yβall. Itβs Bad.
is it possible to tell approximately how long simon was in jail, based on the handcuff scars
They are not scars. Looks like dirt or possibly discoloration from rubbing against old metal. The cuffs were too tight. Definitely bruised.
Therefore, we cannot tell how long Simon's been "working" for the COI as a captive for sure. But, I can infer that these are visually symbolic of Simon being held captive for a hot minute. They would not have gone through the trouble of adding these marks if they meant nothing.

The fact that Mark liked the narrator in Frostpunk 1 so much that he got the guy to narrate for Unus Annus and Iron Lung is so wonderful to me.
Write it badly or it'll never be written

Someone put this against my head like a gun until I understand
Just how irradiated did Ava and David get?
(Been sitting on this one for about a week trying to find a solution with the variables available to me, and failing!)
At timestamp 00:31:49, the manual's radiation warning regarding the SM-13's x ray camera is on screen:
From the manual: "Upon activation, the camera discharges 7,400 millisieverts of radiation per ignition."
That's 7,400 millisieverts of radiation at the point of ignition. The fun thing about radiation is that it follows the inverse square law; double the distance from the source and the dosage received is quartered. So if Jack got the full 7,400 millisieverts (he didn't, there was at least some distance between him and the point of ignition so the dosage he received was probably slightly less than the full 7,400. But for now, I'm going to fudge it and say that he did to avoid the headache) then what dosage did Ava and David receive?
First have to figure out how far away Ava and David were from the camera. The only "definitive" point of reference that I have is David's/Troy Baker's height, which is 6'3"~ or 190.5 cm for my own sanity.
My first instinct would be to do a height/distance calculation by taking that 190.5 cm and dividing by the tangent of the angle from the camera to the top of David's head, however I don't have enough information to get that angle. I've been toying around with a few other ways to calculate the distance, but I'm usually missing at least one necessary variable.
Not giving up just yet, just taking a moment to bang my head against the wall.
Notably, if we establish that Jack was about 0.1 meters away from the camera and got hit with that full 7400 mSv, then if Ava and David were standing just 1 meter away from the camera, they'd only have gotten hit with about 74 mSv of radiation. That's about... 11-12 chest CT scans at once. For reference, your risk for cancer raises about 5.5% upon receiving a dosage of 1000 mSv.
So I guess for now the answer to the question of "just how irradiated did Ava and David get" is: not that much, actually?
Thank you for doing the math. <3
logging onto tumblr like heyyy i'm thinking about the same character i've spent the past few weeks thinking about. no change here. just wanted to let yall know
βMy son, those stars are already dead. Mere ghost light.β
Okay. So. Long post so most of this will be under a cut (Iβm not completely cruel), but I wanna talk about this, because itβs something that I frequently see people get wrong about the Iron Lung universe, and like Iβve said before, space is the one thing that will forever put me in βUHM ACKSHULLY βοΈπ€β mode, so thatβs what Iβm about to do. And you all have to listen or Iβm going to be very upset.

molly brown (or deadlymelodic) answered some related questions about the eel
So, I have a game lore-based theory...
I determined in my timeline-with-evidence post that Simon had been doing labor for the C.O.I. for his entire young adult life. We know he originally was going to be in Ava's standard-issue jumpsuit, we know that sixteen years between Filament Station and the events of Iron Lung had passed, Simon's very familiar with the C.O.I. (probably more than he'd like to be), but not with this specific crew or tow ship.
But... we don't really know what they were using him for.
There's an implication in the game lore I think a lot of people are skipping over:
If all planetary bodies winked out, and what was left were only asteroids, the first thing they'd be doing would be sweeping for these asteroids for chemical matter to synthesize and build with. They're asteroid mining.
Hypothetically, water processed from ice could refuel orbiting propellant depots. Almost every single precious resource we have in our planetary crust right now came from space; from a rain of asteroids. Gold, cobalt, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, osmium, palladium, platinum, rhenium, rhodium, ruthenium, tungsten, etc. [ 1 ]
If humanity has been in space for close to 378 years at this point, there was definitely an entire industry for this. Did you know we're already mining asteroids today? No shit, in 378 years this would have been mastered.
And if I suddenly came into possession of a man who fucked humanity over, who was a strong-arm willing to do what it took to survive, and I needed to send that motherfucker to my space gulag for punishment, where am I gonna put him that's going to give humanity the best possible outsourced labor? What job am I going to spare one of my citizens of?
Mining.
I'm sending his ass to the mines.
My theory:
This is asteroid dust.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
my friend and i were talking yesterday about how funny it is that the Iron Lung/BloodyMary fandoms make Simon some kind of eldritch eel creature, like, i fear y'all lost the plot of the movie a little bit. don't get me wrong, Eel Simon looks badass or whatever, but Simon resisted becoming part of the Eel so wholly that he became a tree and everyone still said, "yeah but what if the eel became part of him anyway make him a scary feesh". y'all that man is a Plant. the Plant Simon Truthers corner of the fandom canNOT be so small as just my friend and i, where are all my homies who love Plant Simon and his green eye and his arm made of vines. all my homies love Plant Simon who lays in the sun and drinks plenty of water and grows little flowers in his hand.
Actually, rewatching the ending of Iron Lung, I think I finally understand what happened.
The final shots we see of Simon show him being assimilated by the blood ocean. We hear Simon's screaming gradually distort into a roar, and there are fang-like teeth growing on the side of his face:
The blood is mutating him into another monstrous fish. This implies the voice speaking to Simon had once been human too, but had since become the monster we've seen throughout the film, having burst out of (not bitten into) the SM-8.
The voice says, "We can save everyone, within us!!" which makes sense if we recall the line from earlier in the film about the blood ("It's us"). It's stated that the blood is human blood, and may even be what remains of the humans that were taken in the Quiet Rapture. As people (like the woman from the SM-8, and like Simon now) are sent down into the blood ocean, are irradiated, and mutate, they are absorbed into a sort of hive-mind connection with the blood itself. (It's sort of an antithesis to the repeated refrain of "It's bigger than us"...no, it literally is us.) Simon and the ship are already part of it--an iron lung, built by what is found in blood (perhaps distilled from it) and refilled with oxygen as if the blood is a body using it to breathe.
Then we follow Simon under the surface of the blood and see the following shots (I've taken down the saturation for clarity). The tree pendant cracks and shoots out tendrils:
Simon resurfaces, and his eye (below) flashes and changes color, becoming more like the giant eye we've seen throughout the film. His mutation seems to be progressing.
It cuts to black and the voice says, "We live." Then it cuts to an exterior shot of an explosion, ripping through the monster, and dark shapes start to shoot out from the center of where the ship had been.
Some people have interpreted this as the completion of Simon's transformation, but it isn't. This isn't a fish or even a tentacled sea creature. It's a tree. The trunk is the upper portion, and the roots are the tendrils spreading out towards the screen.
Simon's choice to hold onto hope allowed what was intended for evil to be used for good. The piece he carried of the Last Tree touched the blood, and, as if to fulfill what Eden had said ("our bodies will become the soil"), used it to grow, destroying the monsters as it did. The blood can nourish something now ("we live"), as it is meant to, even if (just as with the data) we don't get to see what it becomes.
Simon is gone, but the Last Tree lives again. And thanks to him, maybe humanity can too.
You mean at the end he becomes a tree with the pendant !!???!?! V scream crying throwing up

I love a man who's been dead from his very beginning
extras:
The scene in question:
BLAME SHIFTING. THE MOTIF IS BLAME SHIFTING. OMG thank you, this meme just helped me connect some lore dots!!!
The stripe over the eye! The blind eye! The light! All the characters have in common is that they are BLAME SHIFTING.
They are ignorant and blind towards THEMSELVES AS PEOPLE. THE DENIAL THAT THEY ARE ALL MONSTERS.
Ava blames the COI's mission for her cruelty towards convicts.
Simon blames his own Eden Brothers for Filament Station.
The monster blames Ava for her monstrous nature, and Simon for "forcing her hand" against Ava.
The God, The Eye. THE EYE IS NOT BLIND. THE EYE SEES THE TRUE PERPETRATOR IN EVERY STORY AND JUDGES FROM THAT.
That's why...! OH MY GOD.
THAT WAS THE MISSING PIECE I NEEDED. YEAHHHHHH BABY.
