remember: ghosts are typically immune to physical Things, such as fists or spears, because their bodies are not made of things. experts suggest using un-things when facing them in battle, like an un-spear, or a mildly breezy afternoon, or Concepts
*sucker punches a ghost with the feeling of longing*
More than just ‘Jealousy’ (although that’s certainly part of it), I think one of the big through-lines of Chapter 5 is ‘You Can’t Make Someone Love You’. That relationships are complicated and mutual things dependent on personalities and history, and can’t (or shouldn’t) really be ‘forced’. That’s part of the reason for the constant Dating Sim references this Chapter, and it’s something that’s been kinda brewing through the whole game so far. It connects to the recurring ideas of deconstructing video game tropes (notably here the gamification of interpersonal relationships) and your choices not mattering, and also Divorce. How Asgore constantly fails to make Toriel ‘feel what she used to feel’ for him and probably making things worse through these constant attempts.
And to Ralsei’s original naïve ideas of ‘how to be a friend’. Them thinking it’s a simple matter of always ‘being nice’ - paralleling ‘Relationship Mechanics’ in games that are mostly about choosing the friendliest and most placating options, and that's really all you need to 'max out' your relationship with whoever.
Only for them to realize that it’s more complicated than this as they grow closer to Susie, someone who absolutely is not the person who chooses only the ‘nice’ options all the time, and realize that they love her for it. But also at the same time, their sweet and passive demeanor seems to have pretty much failed to endear them to Kris, despite their best efforts.
That relationship only progresses when Ralsei stops trying so hard to be Lovable….
And then also Our Choices Don’t Matter meaning that there’s no Choice a Player can make that can meaningfully change Kris’s most important relationships. These relationships also don’t depend on simply picking ‘positive’ options (because if one likes Kris, that also goes hand-in-hand with liking some amount emotionally detached teasing and pranks). AND the most important moments of relationship development happen of Kris’s own volition, and they will rebel against words that are either too cruel or too sappy to their own taste. Which in previous Chapters was mostly a positive, hopeful thing. No matter our influence, Kris’s friends will always be Kris’s friends first and foremost. We don’t have enough power to ruin their most important relationships or to make their friends love them for something that they’re not.
But in this Chapter, there’s a new melancholy wrinkle added to it. Through the whole Festival Sequence, you’re presented with a bunch of choices that under standard ‘Game Logic’ might be expected to influence the relationships between Kris, Susie and Noelle - but in true Deltarune fashion, regardless of your choices, Susie and Noelle always start their romance at the end of it. But while this could be a heartwarming story about Cute Teenaged Lesbian Love triumphing over a manipulative Amoral Time God… the whole situation also makes it very clear that even if Kris was able to make choices freely, there’s nothing they could choose that would make Susie love them either. No matter how close they and Susie get, she just doesn’t seem to be attracted to them that way.
You can also add to it the way the Flowery Final Boss plays on the ‘Power of Friendship’ bit that’s generally expected at the end of a Pacifist Run…
Where Flowery has his own Recruits that instead seem to team-up with Flowery and against you, regardless of your choices. Because the cute little ACTs you did to Recruit them were nice and all, but were they really enough to make them truly love you more than they already loved Flowery and the other Flowers? More then they loved their Dark World?
And then there’s Flowery’s whole thing. Like in many other aspects of their characters, he and Ralsei are two sides of the same coin. If Pre-Character-Development Ralsei is like someone who tries to please and befriend everyone in an RPG, Flowery is someone trying to powergame his way through a dating sim. His (and the other Flowers) constant showering of Asgore with admiration, gifts and ideal hang-outs/dates that are all just perfect for him are partly just trying to repay Asgore for the kindness he’s given them and making him happy… and also to try and make Asgore choose Flower Kingdom and his Flower Family over Hometown and his Light World Family.
As much as Flowery teases Ralsei over their jealousy of him, his behavior often reveals that he’s jealous of Kris, for being part of that family that has, from his perspective, have given Asgore nothing but grief, and yet he still seems to love more than the Flowers. Kris is a living demonstration of how his gifts and dedication to Asgore is secretly just as ‘useless’ as his fake made-up overpowered stats. Flowery is also well aware that Kris is the one that opened the Fountain in the first place, and that they seem to have some sort of hidden agenda that’s not beneficial to their dad, and Flowery still feels like Asgore will always choose them over him.
And, well, the resolution to the Flower Kingdom arc is a mixture of that (especially considering how much he was motivated into exploring the Dark Worlds out of a belief that it will magically make his family life ‘go back to normal’…. Literally pushing the Flowers away for the sake of that goal...)
But also, it’s kind of a matter that Asgore does absolutely love the Flowers, just not in the way they wanted to. The Flowers wanted Asgore to love being around them so much, he’d choose their fantasy even if it means their deaths, but Asgore loved the Flowers so much that he wanted them to live.
And in way, that’s also kind of a mirror to Kris’ situation with Susie. She definitely loves Kris, they just feel like she’d never love them the way they’d want her to.
And then, the way Pink interacts with the whole Dating Sim Pastiches adds in some wrinkles of important nuance. She’s the one notable occasion (well, outside of the other even bigger exception we’d get to in a moment) where the Gamification of Relationships is actually useful, both for the Player to progress and beat the Fight and for Pink’s Body and Ghost to solve their relationship issues. In a way, it’s kinda like saying “Well, of course, just because you can’t make anyone love you, that doesn’t mean Choices don’t matter at all in relationships, obviously. Making Choices of consideration and healthy communication is important.”
And even then, part of the resolution is Pink’s Ghost accepting her Body’s needs even if it means she won’t necessarily have her all for herself. She there’s still there’s this undercurrent of accepting that you can’t make people love you the way you want them too.
But, of course, the biggest and obvious exception of the concept of ‘You can’t make someone love you’ is, well, the same as what seems to be the biggest exception to the concept of ‘Your choices don’t matter’, and that’s the Weird Route, of course.
The Weird Route is the one exception to the idea that we and our choices can’t have a meaningful affect on Kris’ relationships, and it very intentionally uses a lot of the Tropes and language of, like, going on a Romance Route with a character in a Video Game, complete with a supposed ‘climax’ when said NPC decides to invite you to the big romantic Festival, and it also uses every storytelling tool in its disposal to showcase how it’s utterly creepy and manipulative and wrong.
It’s adding to the point of ‘you can’t make people love you’ with ‘also, even if you can make people love you, you probably fucking shouldn’t”.
But I suppose, in many ways it is still a case of one not being able to control how people love them…
Interesting analysis! There's a part I think you glossed over, though, and that's Susie's own feelings about having to make someone love you. She frames love as something you feel when someone else already loves you, and has several sequences in the Dark World where she does things, sometimes ones she really doesn't like, because she thinks that will make Noelle like her more. It's sad that she can't break out of this transactional mindset when she has other people who love her no matter what.
Chara poisoned themselves because taking their life was a means to an end, Kris will poison themselves because taking their life is the end itself.
Chara poisoned themselves because they were consumed by hatred for their own kind; Kris will poison themselves because they’re consumed by hatred for themselves.
Chara poisoned themselves because they wanted to reach the absolute; Kris will poison themselves because they think it will give them absolution.
Chara poisoned themselves because they felt solely responsible for fulfilling everyone’s hopes; Kris will poison themselves because they feel solely responsible for destroying everyone's hopes.
Chara poisoned themselves and took advantage of someone they loved to fulfill their plan; Kris will poison themselves because they’re sick of being forced to take advantage of the people they love to fulfill their plan.
Chara poisoned themselves because they believed everyone would be happy and safe if they obtained the power to reshape the world; Kris will poison themselves because they believe everyone will be happy and safe if they remove themselves from the world.
Chara poisoned themselves because they believed it would make them worthy of everyone’s love; Kris will poison themselves because they believe they’re unworthy of anyone’s love.
Chara poisoned themselves because they wanted to rid the world of humanity; Kris will poison themselves because they believe they're losing their humanity.
The Demon Who Saved a God: An In-Depth Analysis of Chara's Salvation
Artwork commission done by @bewalkedi which was paid for by me!
Gather here, young UTDR fans. And let this old, grumpy veteran of the 2010-era Undertale fandom tell you about the day the Chara Wars were won.
On a quiet Sunday evening on September 21st, 2025, the Undertale fandom was struck by what can only be described as the Tsar Bomb of truth nukes. In a single instant, a decade’s worth of bad takes and bogus fanon was completely and thoroughly annihilated.
The warhead that caused such great and terrible devastation was made of a simple 9-word-long sentence:
To those of you who are new to this fandom, it seems like nothing more than a neat lore drop. But for those of us who’ve been fans since the mid to late 2010s... we all felt like the Rebel starfighter pilots watching the 2nd Death Star blow up. We all knew what it meant: our favourite rose-cheeked, cocoa-loving freak was finally free from the clutches of media illiteracy!
With this statement, Toby Fox demonstrated that they were no less deserving of salvation than every other character in Undertale. That they were anything but an irredeemable megalomaniac that saw everyone as instruments to be used and wanted nothing more than to spread misery, havoc, and destruction wherever they went.
The war was finally over! They beat the allegations! And Toby Fox ensured that anyone who dared to utter the phrase "Chara is evil!" would be ridiculed, roasted, and ratioed to high heaven.
And yet... something about this whole thing kinda bothered me.
While I was certainly euphoric to see Toby Fox confirm Chara’s salvation, I couldn't help but wonder how exactly it all happened. But sadly, it seemed like nobody knew how it went down either. No matter where I looked on Tumblr, Twitter, Reddit, or any other corner of the fandom, no one had a definitive answer as to how Chara was saved.
It seemed that, in true Chara lore fashion, this was something that Toby Fox would forever leave shrouded in ambiguity and uncertainty. Maybe the truth is that this was just cheap fan service or some half-baked retcon, made without any care for how it would affect the story of Undertale...
...OR IS IT!?!?
After a good few months of research and analysis, I've come to the conclusion that Chara's salvation in the Pacifist Run was not as brilliant or well-thought-out as you think it is.
IT'S EVEN BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You thought Chara's character was fantastic before? Oh, my fellow hellsite user, you are in for a heck of a treat! You DO NOT have the FAINTEST IDEA just how much the phrase "Now there is one person left to save... Chara" does, for not just their character, but for the narrative and themes of Undertale as a whole!!!
So it's with great pride and greater pleasure that I present to you in deeeeeeeeliciously autistic detail (and yes I am autistic thanks for asking!) the ABSOLUTELY FANTABULOUS REDEMPTION ARC OF ONE CHARA DREEMURR!
Chapter 1: "At first, I was confused."
Now, before we can get into how Chara changed for the better, I think it's important that I demonstrate to y'all that they were capable of change in the first place.
wait please continue talking about padmé and anakin and their similarities and also just padmé in general everything you said in that last ask was GENIUS
mostly i view anakin and padme as existing on a sliding scale - two people who, under similar life circumstances, probably would have adjusted to those circumstances in broadly similar ways, but life experiences have forged them into two opposite ends. i’ll explain.
padme is a deep believer in peace, but she’s also, clearly, a believer in using violence to attain that peace; she’s good at it, she does it often, she can more than handle herself. AOTC goes out of its way to show that padme, while not being force sensitive and not a warrior monk with cosmic power, is clever and knows how to fight. quick aside, the scene where she kisses anakin’s cheek after she hoists herself up on the beast he tamed with the force is elite, and it means everything to me, side note over. padme doesn’t condone war, but she condones violent opposition to it, or, in essence, she’s exactly the sort of person who would’ve backed the rebel alliance, because that’s who george lucas wrote her to be; not a pacifist but not indulgent in violence, neither afraid of it or excited by it. her approach to her usage of violence never strays from the fact that it’s a means to an end.
anakin, despite everything, is not actually dissimilar from that - repeatedly, he states order is the path to peace, that through immense and horrific violence he’s bringing peace to the galaxy, because anakin, though an extremely effective war machine, doesn’t actually want to be one. his own purpose is to make himself obsolete, and even as vader, his most famous speech has him stating “together we can end this destructive conflict.” anakin’s stated goals in life never include general or supreme commander, and even though he takes pride in his lethal skill, it’s never something he states he wants. he becomes so extreme, though, in his views on what’s okay to actually attain peace, and what’s considered liberty, that he ends up hitting a point where his day job is slaughtering his way through the galaxy justifying it internally to himself as Palpatine’s Grand And True And Kind Vision. violence becomes not only something he’s good at, but also literally his purpose for existing, at all points hobby, outlet, and job; he becomes the tool itself, embodies the warmongering he sees as the one path to peace, both internally in himself and in the external galaxy around him.
he is in a lot of ways the very end of the sliding scale padme’s squarely in the middle of; they wanted the same thing, and had wildly different ideas of how to go about it. the one thing they shared very consistently was that they wanted the galaxy to be a better place, but anakin feels that to create that better place he has to pass it off to someone worthy of controlling it, because that’s more or less the only solution anakin ever has to any of his problems, and meanwhile padme believes more strongly in the republic’s democracy, which, ironically, fails her entirely when she needs it the most. general values aside, padme is similarly reckless and impulsive - she risks her life often to do things technically considered below her station, and pretty much never demonstrates thinking for a second before jumping directly into the middle of something. in TCW, she gets roped into the drama surrounding jabba’s lost son simply because she could and she felt like it; in another episode she violates the law to investigate a murder and drags bail organa with her to go chase down the killer with guns blazing, absolutely no brain cells firing. her path of finding the murderer is literally “walk up and ask people if they killed someone recently” and at the end of the episode she knocks the actual killer out cold with one punch as a massive Fuck You. maybe she’s not on anakin’s level of reckless and impulsive, but, really, the level of reckless and impulsive that is “in the span of a week i can burn down the galaxy, my home, everyone and everything i know and also myself in stunning fashion, hold my beer” should really only be reached by one person at a time. so again, where padme exists, anakin takes that existence to the very extremes.
because the point, narratively, i believe, was to demonstrate that they were never actually all that different - that their similarities connected them, not their opposites, and that’s what makes the concept of who anakin finally becomes resonate so much harder. because he comes to represent a morally depraved caricature of everything she’d found kinship with in anakin - she’d found someone who perceived faults and wanted a change, except his idea of changing it was to burn it down over and over until it finally grew right. there’s a comic panel where vader calls himself mercy, because he’s offering people the ultimate out - death. padme met anakin as someone who wanted to help people, that’s what she’d known him as, and then later on he took it to horrific, evil extremes where his version of help is mass slaughter. both reckless, impulsive, dangerous and prepared to be dangerous, but circumstances have created a divergence where one of them can take that to obsessive, unhinged extremes, and the other can rein it in. anakin never demonstrates the capability of buying into the more abstract concepts padme lives her life by - liberty, for example - because abstract concepts like principles or morals are things that, from a young age, most people have violated in his direction. principles don’t matter if no one has principles. by comparison, padme’s early life was literally dedicated to developing those principles and developing them so well she can speak on them and broadcast them to an audience, and that’s really the difference - padme believes in something, and anakin believes what other people believe. on mustafar, his words, his grand speech about how he’s fallen, they’re not even his, they’re just lifted from what palpatine had told him.

Anakin: [dramatic and villainous] Join me, Master! I’ll give you one last chance! Obi-Wan: …fine. Anakin: I – [Dramatic John Williams Score cuts out] Wait, what? Obi-Wan: I said all right, then. [puts his cloak back on] Anakin: [mouth agape] Wh– no, Master, you – Obi-Wan: You offered, didn’t you? I mean if the Jedi Order and Republic are over, as you say, I suppose I’ve got to find employment somewhere. Anakin: [with gears visibly turning in his head] Well – but – it’s just. I’m talking about the Dark Side, Master, you know that, right? Obi-Wan: Yes. What else could you have possibly been talking about? Anakin: I…right, of course. So…you’re just, fine with becoming a Sith Lord, just like that. Obi-Wan: [smoothing out his sleeves] Hmm? I mean, I suppose, you know. Whatever you want to do. Anakin: That…this doesn’t make any sense. Obi-Wan: See, those were my thoughts exactly! Anakin: [confused as hell] …yeah, so…why… Obi-Wan: [scrolling on his phone] I, too, thought to myself “goodness! That certainly looks like Anakin pledging his life to a Sith Lord, but that, that makes no sense whatsoever! We were just about to win the war, and at any rate I just saw him only a handful of hours ago. Becoming a Sith, at this moment of all moments, would be possibly the stupidest, least-thought-through decision he’s ever made, even including that time he ate those leftovers that had been in the conservator since before we left for Christophsis.” Anakin: [makes a face] Obi-Wan: But then I thought, “well, Obi-Wan, you’ve known Anakin a very long time, surely if he’s doing something this drastic, it must be for a very good reason indeed. A reason that is based on solid facts that he has thought through at length after having gotten many hours of restful sleep. It’s not like he’d turn to the Dark Side because he’s panicked about something and refuses to talk to anyone about it in any actionable detail, and has decided to place all his proverbial eggs in one basket that happens to belong to a Sith Lord who orchestrated this entire war from the start!” Because of course that would be idiotic. And if that were the case, Anakin should probably just shut up and get on the ship and go help his wife before I have to do something I very much wouldn’t like to have to do to him. Anakin: [opens his mouth] [closes it] [unintelligible mumble] Obi-Wan: So, very well then. Sith Lords it is. Do I need to do anything immediately, or shall we just get on to murdering people?I I must say I don’t own many dark colors, but I’m sure we can stop at a store at some point during our killing spree. Anakin: W– no, I mean, Obi-Wan, you can’t…like…be that way. That’s not…you’re…you. Obi-Wan: What way is that, Anakin? Did you or did you not ask me to join you? Hmm? I said I accept. I presume you are a man of your word. Whom shall I kill in cold blood? [draws his lightsaber] Anakin: I…you should. I just. [mumbles again] Obi-Wan: What’s that? I couldn’t quite hear you. [leans in slightly] Would it bother you to see me behaving in such a way? Would it disappoint you, or possibly even tear your heart into pieces to watch your Master fall so far and do such terrible things? Would you do anything, forgive anything even though that is objectively insane, in the off chance that I might see reason, because I am behaving so far beyond anything you know of me? Anakin: [looks away and stares] [more mumbling, scuffs his boot on the ground] Obi-Wan: …well?! Anakin: [pouting and picking up his cloak, already walking away] I said I’ll get in the ship!
I infinitely prefer this kind of roasting of Anakin to the way that Definitely Didn’t Happen In Canon No Siree.

Take a sneak peek at the upcoming 35th Anniversary short form animation, Sonic the Hedgehog: Memories and Beyond!
i’d love to see more fantasy/sci-fi worlds where a species lifespan difference between a married couple, or between friends, is a normal factor of life. i’m tired of dramatic angsting about it, i want to see how people cope with it when it’s just an everyday part of the world
how does it affect ideas of marriage when you are not, in fact, expected to be able to live out both your lives together? do certain species have specific traditions for mourning their shorter-lived friends? are interspecies friendships and relationships more avoided or more valued because of this? do longer-lived species form bonds with whole families, part of their lives for generation after generation? how does it affect society’s ideas of age/maturity if some people will never reach certain ages? are comparisons between different species’ relative ages argued about? how would it affect a political landscape if people with vastly different lifespans lived in one place?
i want “help, i know this is normal for humans but my husband decided to spend ALL the rest of his short life with me and now i can’t cope with how much i love him”. i also want “fuck, i killed a guy and i have to pay a wergild for his life but it turns out he had a lifespan 50x a human’s and the court here says i have to pay 50x as much, please bail me out”
“extortionate rates? ma’am, i am merely a humble artist. if you don’t want the very finest job done preserving the visage of those who will be gone in a mere flutter of a butterfly’s wings—pardon the expression—then by all means seek a cheaper option”
“our local ruler is from a species that endures hundreds of years longer than us. my children’s children will not live to see the end of his tyranny. unless we put an end to it ourselves”
“oh, that’s my uncle! he’s been a friend of the family for twenty generations. my ancestor saved his life in battle, you know how it is, he’s supposed to stay until he saves one of our lives in return. but we’re mostly shopkeepers so now he’s just kind of here. gives great birthday presents”
“sweetheart please stop making me put off writing a will. we both know you have no life skills so you are going to be provided for when i die or so help me i WILL make you learn how to cook”
