i have a theory about pjo tv. Look up 'second screening' or 'second screen viewing'. netflix is the only large company i think that has been confirmed to be working with this mindset that they must dumb everything down because people are going to be on their phones, but pjo tv just feels so incredibly spoonfed that i would not be surprised if they're using it to defang any true interesting part of the show.
there's a lot more to it of course, i've gotten into actually comparing the show to the books and i think very few of the characters are actually similar to their book counterparts, which is wild because rick said this would be a faithful adaptation, but whatever...

i just finished st5 and i'm not like in the fandom - i was just "forced" to watch it with my family bc my brother likes the show and blah blah blah whatever but like. i really noticed it with s5 that they treat the audience like they're stupid. it probably happened in previous seasons too but that was so long ago that i don't remember. but like they flashed to hopper's dead daughter a million times like. yeah bro. we get it. leave the subtlety in his expression and body language. have him reach for the bracelet from his daughter that he gave to el only to have his fingers meet air. why am i seeing this dead kid's face every three frames. I GOT IT omllll
and honestly the show does it too but almost worse bc they have the characters say it all out loud to explain it to you. like. bro. leave it between the lines. the real fans will find it and praise you for it.

thinking of percy going to school as a small child. learning that some of his peers talk to deceased family members in their heads to cope with grief. and deciding to take the time each night to talk to his father. telling him a funny story of how mom laughed so hard, milk came out of her nose. of how he got a near perfect score on his third grade spelling test. of each time he got expelled from school and how much he knew it made mom sad. of how his stepfather is the meanest bully he's ever met. of how he wished the two of them had more time together so they could share s'mores and stories around the campfire. of how much he grieves the father he never had. and thinking of poseidon sitting in his throne atop olympus. tears threatening to fall at the sound of his son's voice. mirroring the grief of a child he never got to raise.
In the end Akhlys did succeed, because feeling like a monster for what he did when fighting her makes Percy more miserable than death ever could

So we all, anti-Percabeth/Annabeth, agree that the problem with her is her arrogance and sick need to control everyone, right? That's of course due to Rick's poor skills to write women and his creepy beliefs that powerful women insult and physically hurt their boyfriends. But I constantly think about how all of that could make Percabeth such an interesting couple. Anties think that they should just break up but I genuinely believe it could work out if Rick even tried. It would be interesting and sweet watching them grow together. They can, they love each other so much they're willing to heal just to be together.
Just imagine Percabeth's normal toxic relationship but actually being handled for what it is, a toxic relationship as a result of all their trauma that just increases their tendency to relapse into their fatal flaws. Annabeth's pride and arrogance treating Percy poorly and (TW for Percabeth shippersš«©) abusive and Percy's self loyalty, low self-esteem and fear of losing his loved ones ignoring this and allowing and excusing Annabeth's treatment... Now that's an interesting plot. It's already difficult for demigods to continue their lives after a bad mission, now imagine after going through Tartarus and surviving wars.
If Rick wasn't so full of himself and tried to give a second thought to his misogynist beliefs Percabeth would be such a powerful and healthy relationship. I'm really furious because it really has the potential to become my favorite couple. š„¹š
Two kids that grow learning that they won't even make it to adulthood, that their existence will inevitably bring them the worst type of suffering, learning that the only way to survive is to always act like a warrior in the middle of a battlefield, leaning to each other and trying to deal with their traumas the best they can to not fall into madness, of course, leaving them very confused and wrong about how to deal with their feelings and how to treat other people, always in constant tension and caution ready to attack at the minimum inconvenience. These kids are so messed up and it SHOWS, even if it wasn't Rick's intention. But I really wish Rick would notice this and write about it because how great and touching the story would be.
Percy and Annabeth love each other sooo much, it shows, but they do have a toxic relationship.
i have this headcanon that percy and rachel reconnect after his first year at new rome. he visits camp half-blood and runs into her. they talk for a few minutes and agree to see a movie together as friends. and within a week. they're back to finding comfort in each other's presence. having inside jokes. and bi-weekly painting sessions. and late might conversations about their hopes and dreams for the future. just a really healthy friendship that they've needed since they were fifteen.

i am not understanding rick's thought process behind the characters consistent mockery of percy's intelligence. especially in light of knowing that the characters do value percy as a friend and demigod. he was the child of the prophecy. he jumped into the river styx to better prepare for defending olympus. he used his gods-given wish to build a better future for demigods. he plays an active role as camp counselor at chb and is a respected confidant at cj. he is evidently held in high regard in his absense. but the surrounding characters seem to treat his presence like a hinderance to their peace. it's rather disappointing to read.

I still remember being excited when the Pjo tv show's first chapter came out. I was sooo happy that I completely ignored horrible mistakes in the first chapter... I should've known better and seen the red flags :')
I knew some things were wrong but the moment I watched the second chapter and saw Percy's joke about Thalia I KNEW the show was shit.
One of the things I love about Percy so much is his empathy. Percy almost CRIED when Grover told him about Thalia's sacrifice, he admired her and felt so bad for her, and even felt ashamed he couldn't do the same with his mom... And you're telling me that when he finds out in the show he literally just MOCKS HER?! HE MOCKS HER SACRIFICE? I just know the writers were clapping each other's backs and thought: "Hahaha Persassy" EXCUSE ME? That's NOT sassy, Percy was acting like a motherfucking asshole! Why would he (or anyone) joke about a little girl being killed!
And MY GOD, Annabeth just saying "don't laugh, she met a hero's fateš„ŗ" and then she just brushed it up and kept walking...GIRL? He's mocking your best friend's DEATH! SLAP HIM!!!!

The "not my type" line has been misinterpreted and memed to death for the past 10 years, but it's important to recognize what Percy was really saying during that scene: "I didn't even realize you were intoĀ guys. Frankly, I kind of thought you still hated me. How did IĀ missĀ this?"
The "not my type line" read very much like a confused echo. He might have been wondering who Nico's typeĀ was, but that would have been more due to curiosity than anything else.
The way the fandom has somehow twisted it into Percy being offended about not being Nico's type always annoyed me, and the fact that it's become the basis for most of their fanon interactions drives me up a wall. There's so much more to their dynamic, and I feel like this is one of the cases where canon actually fleshes their dynamic outĀ moreĀ than popular fanon does. Canon shows a friendship that transforms, drastically, from hero worship, to grudge induced hatred, to an unsteady alliance (on Percy's side) and a conflicted crush (on Nico's), to a tenuous but slowly solidifying friendship that's backed by years of complicated history.Ā
But so many of the people on Tumblr and Pinterest still reduce it to a dumb "not my type" meme.

Percy Jackson is one of the most unreliable narrators in YA fantasy
Especially because he might be the most dangerous demigod to ever live and the only reason we donāt all see it is because of his narration
Think about it, in Heroes of Olympus, Percy is a living weapon. Heās the kid who drowned an entire volcano, toppled a titan, held up the sky and yet if you only read his narration, youād think he was just some guy with a sword and a bad haircut.
He downplays everything. Heāll casually mention taking down a fleet, then go off on a tangent about blue food or how awkward he feels around Reyna. The boy is walking Greek nuclear power and he sells himself short.
Itās not false humility but rather a shield. Percy has always narrated from the back foot, using sarcasm and understatement to keep the world from realizing how heavy it all feels to carry. The Gods know what he is. His enemies know what he is. Even his friends sometimes pause, look at him and are in awe of him.
The wild part? We still see him as an underdog because he wants us to. He never lets the narrative turn into āThe Great Percy Jackson, Savior of Olympus.ā
