i'm talking, more specifically, about annabeth telling percy not to use his (for lack of a better word) bloodbending ever again?

cuz i feel like that was sooo ooc for her!

especially cuz of the fact that she's known she was a demigod for like forever and managed to survive a year out in the wild with thalia and luke. so she definitely knows that anything that demigods can use to tip the scales in their favour is free game, so i don't understand why she reacted the way she did

I think this is one of those scenes where there are just too many factors involved for us to be totally objective. Both Percy and Annabeth were completely valid in how they acted and what they said. They were in horrible mental and physical states. Percy even said he felt like something inside him snapped when it happened—so clearly, he wasn’t acting like his usual self. Annabeth saw that, and it scared her.

Personally, I think Percy was fully within his rights to do what he did. (And yeah, I also think it was cool as hell.) That goddess was going to kill them and make them suffer. The gods have already messed with his life so much, and he was done. They’d hit his last nerve. In my opinion, Akhlys deserved it. So yeah—what he did was totally justifiable.

That said, Annabeth was already completely terrified and worn down by Tartarus. Seeing Percy—her safe person, the sweetest guy she knows—do something like that was understandably upsetting. It probably reminded her of Luke, too. And I really don’t think it was the act of turning Akhlys’ poison back on her that bothered Annabeth. Percy does something similar in Wrath of the Triple Goddess, when he reverses the paralyzing potion Phaedra throws at Annabeth and paralyzes Phaedra instead—and Annabeth doesn’t seem bothered at all. If anything, it’s kind of implied she’s impressed. He also manipulates his and Grover's bodily fluids to save them from poison (and accidentally dehydrates them lol) and again, it's not a problem. So no—it wasn’t the turn-poison-back-on-the-posioner action itself. It was the fact that Percy was enjoying it. Akhlys was shrieking and wailing and choking... and Percy looked like he was getting satisfaction out of it. That’s what scared Annabeth. Especially in the nightmare environment of Tartarus, when her anxiety was already through the roof.

Also, earlier in Tartarus, after he kills Arachne, Percy says “she died too easily” and “she deserved worse.” Annabeth internally notes that his tone unsettled her and that she was glad Arachne died quickly. Arachne—who was her own personal nightmare... So yeah, Percy was already being affected by Tartarus (which he later admits), and Annabeth saw that happening. She loves Percy exactly the way he is. She doesn’t want him going dark like Luke did.

I genuinely don’t understand how people are calling her abusive for being scared. Like… god forbid a 17-year-old girl in the toxic depths of hell shows fear because her sweet boyfriend is suddenly smiling as he tortures someone?? Yeah, it was Percy—someone she knows and loves—but he wasn’t acting like himself. And there’s nothing scarier than seeing someone you love become unrecognizable, even for a moment.

One more thing I want to add. People act like Annabeth treated him like a monster afterward, but here’s what actually happened:

Annabeth stumbled toward him. She looked like a corpse wreathed in smoke, but she felt solid enough when she gripped his arms.

"Percy, please don’t ever…” Her voice broke in a sob. “Some things aren’t meant to be controlled. Please.”

His whole body tingled with power, but the anger was subsiding. The broken glass inside him was beginning to smooth at the edges.

Then… they move on. It comes up a few more times individually, but not between the two of them.

She was obviously scared, heartbroken, incredibly anxious and traumatized—from everything—but she wasn’t trying to hurt him or call him a bad person. She just wanted him to come back to her. And he wasn’t himself—he says that. You have to remember: this was right after it happened. Annabeth didn’t know he was going to stop. She didn’t know he was going to come back. For all she knew, that could’ve been his breaking point. He might’ve gone full dark mode, never to be himself again. Like Luke.

She wasn’t yelling or lashing out—she used logic, touch, and a gentle voice to reach him. And it worked. He came back. But she had no way of knowing he would. So how else was she supposed to react in that moment? Calmly? Gracefully? Tell him “nice torturing skills!”?? It doesn’t matter that he saved them. It still scared her. She’s allowed to feel that way. Just like he was allowed to lash out and turn some of his pain back on the goddess. They were both shaken up by it. It was a terrible situation they were forced into.

Okay, this is the greatest ask I've ever gotten and I honestly think about this topic all of the time! Here are my thoughts:

I don't like the way Rick resolved the love triangle either.

I do acknowledge that, according to Greek Mythology, becoming the Oracle means vowing complete devotion to Apollo, so logistically, Rachel taking the chastity vow isn't as cheap a shot as it may seem. However, I agree that because of how Rachel was removed from the playing field, it does, to paraphrase, lead to Percy settling with Annabeth because Rachel wasn't there to be an option.

But to answer your question: If Percy had to choose, who would he pick?

I think he'd pick Annabeth. Not just because he wants to, but because he thinks he supposed to.

Objectively speaking, Percy and Annabeth have five years of history and have fought side by side in countless life or death circumstances. He's the most loyal to her, so he has a predisposition to Annabeth. But I do think this choice would lead to the downfall of their relationship some years down the road.

As for Percy and Rachel, I believe their friendship was genuine at first, but they were both using each other as an escape from their lives, so it makes sense that it would end when it did.

Hell, if it were up to me, I would have still had Rachel become the Oracle, but have Percy and Annabeth wait until after the second war to get together. This way, Percy's fatal flaw (loyalty) allows him to still value and maintain a relationship with both girls and positions Percy to actively choose Annabeth later on. I feel like this is the best way to amicablly resolve the love triangle.

They still go to Olympus, Athena still disapproves of Percy and annabeth that stays the same but they don’t dance straight after they go back to camp and the camera decide to throw a bonfire/ party by the lake to continue the night. Percy drifts off to the dock alone (which is out of view from the other campers) where he sits at the end (it’s a square) with his legs over the edge. He’s takes annabeths necklace out his pocket and twirls it in his hands, a small tear slips down his cheek as he’s thinking how he almost lost her. Cut to annabeth asking Grover if he’s seen Percy and he nods in the direction of the deck. Cut back to Percy, the necklace is back on his pocket and he’s making shapes with the water using his powers, he doesn’t even hear annabeth approaching as he’s so caught up in his thoughts / feelings, annabeth stands slightly away and says “you’re getting better at that” (referring to his powers) he looks up and gives her a soft smile and invites her to sit down. They share a sweet conversation where annabeth thanks Percy for coming to save her, he then pulls the necklace back out his pocket, annabeth is surprised he has it and says “did you have that the whole time? “ And he replies “I held onto this knowing I’d see you again” whilst still sitting side by side, he then puts the necklace on her (parallel to season 1 🥹) she reaches up to touch her necklace and the leans her head on his shoulder. They sit in comfortable silence until annabeth remembers Percy was going to tell her something earlier. Then that’s when he says standing up , i think I owe you a dance, and she takes his hand and then slow dance alone together on the end of the dock 🥹she reaches up to touch is grey streak , then the conversation “you didn’t think I was dead? - NEVER” happens as they sway slowly, annabeth leans in as an almost kiss but turns her head to lay on his chest, then Percy grips her a little tighter.

I Become One with the Plumbing - Bathroom Scene

Annabeth adjusts the straps on his armor.

The first two times he hears her speak, it is clear she is set on figuring out who he is and how he can benefit her. This is further proven during their third interaction (the bathroom scene) when she watches Clarisse and her cabinmates bully him instead of helping him fight. Annabeth verbally admits that she's only looking out for herself. Then, we get that scene with Luke when he also confirms it by essentially saying that Annabeth is desperate to make something of herself and hovers over newcomers to see if they will be her ticket out of camp. So when they prepare for Capture the Flag, and she tells him to accompany her, he fully expects her to be as closed off as she has always been.

Except, she takes him by complete surprise when she pauses their conversation to adjust the straps on his armor.

She did not have to do that, but she did (!!) because she knows firsthand that the world is not kind, especially as a demigod, and demigods cannot be caught slacking. It’s a very brief moment, but it shows that deep down, she does care about other than herself. But it’s one step forward and three steps back when after he breaks Clarisse’s spear, she takes off her hat and reveals to Percy that she watched him get bullied yet again. And then it’s three more steps back when she expresses remorse before shoving him into the camp lake.

At this point, he knows that being a demigod goes way deeper than he initially thought and that Annabeth does care about people other than herself, but, for some reason, would rather shut everyone out and shove people in the nearest body of water than act like it.

“It’s only then that he realizes water isn’t just agitated below them. Some of it has taken a life of its own, serpentine and curling around Annabeth’s fingers, her collarbones, her cheek…. Places he’s wanted to hold, to kiss, or heal over the years.”
