Because this blog is my brain dump space, it's not something I necessarily want to have too much of my identity attached to.

I need fat female characters in tv whose weight is inconsequential. It means nothing to the story.

She's fat and gets the guy and no one bats an eye.

She's fat and the hottest chick in the sorority and that's normal.

She's fat and an actress and she gets good roles.

She's fat and she's funny and she has character depth and growth.

She's fat and the main character and no one mentions her weight once.

I'm fat and my weight doesn't play a part in my day to day conversations, or plans, or friendships. Why can't I have that on tv?

Hey did you know that people with anorexia or other restrictive EDs who actually lose significant weight, become underweight, maintain low body weight for years etc have been shown to have a literal, biological brain difference allowing this to happen rather than just being "good" at having an ED? Did you know that the vast majority of people with EDs involving restriction are average or overweight and never become thin regardless of the ED? Anyway you don't lack discipline you have a mental health issue that's ruining your health, and your weight has very little to do with what health actually looks like and NOTHING to do with your character or worth as a person.

The second article points out that a lot of fatter/larger people with restrictive eating disorders are assumed to have bulimia and/or binge eating disorder, rather than anorexia, simply because they are not underweight.

Then it goes on to say that fat people make up a large percentage of the patients diagnosed with binge eating disorder.

This can obviously be true either way - binge eating usually coincides with restriction, and fat people are very, very prone to restrictive behavior around food due to societal and medical pressure - but it made me think of the comic panel about the study finding 98 % of people like to participate in studies:

If fat people are most likely to be diagnosed with binge eating disorder (even when they have anorexia), then the statistics will show that more than 50% of binge eating disorder patients (= people who have been diagnosed with it) are fat (without being truly representative of how many people REALLY HAVE binge eating disorder).

It’s still a very important read.

SIMPLE GUIDE:

Body Horror: Things that cannot happen in real life. EX: The Thing, stomach mouths, eyes on hands, etc

Gore: Fresh injuries, often severe. EX: Severed leg, gutspill, deep gashes, etc

NEITHER: Healed injuries and burns, congenital differences, missing appendages, etc. If I could theoretically go to the store and see that character browsing the isles- It isn't body horror or gore. That's just a person. *AND the amount of people that tag, not just fictional characters, but real human beings as body horror is staggering. Its not solely a fandom issue, ableism and bigotry against anyone that looks sufficiently "different" is prevalent in real life and has devastating consequences.
