‘Translation Studies? But don’t you just need a dictionary?’

When people go into Translation Studies because they are ‘good with languages’.

When I have an assignment due the next day.

When someone looks at my source text and goes ‘This is untranslatable!’

‘Translation Studies? That’s cool … So you speak all the languages and stuff?’

Helping other students both with their translations and their essays while struggling to keep up with my own work.

When the editors of the journal to which I’ve submitted an article reduce the word limit for their papers out of nowhere simply because reasons.

Reading the little note at the beginning of some German texts that says ‘while we’re using male forms only, we of course mean to refer to both men and women’.

When after my talk at a conference on the topic of translation and power, someone from the audience asks ‘but isn’t your argument a political one?’
