Summary: It's New Years Eve and this man simply refuses to do anything but be a pain in your ass.
Warnings: cursing, alcohol
A/N: Sid. did you know. did you know that you're literally a genius. you're so right about grumpy x grumpy. i do not know if I have done this justice but I wrote this out on my phone because I like this request so much thank you for sending one in šā¤ļø
New Yearās Eve is a migraine wrapped in tinsel and cheap champagne. Youāve seen too many years roll over into nothing to care anymore.
Doesnāt matter. Youāre here because the barās open, and when someone says āopen bar,ā you take it as a challenge to see how open it can really be.
āWhatāll it be?ā the bartender asks.
āWhateverās most expensive.ā
He ducks under the counter, comes back with a bottle that looks more like a museum piece than alcohol. Fancy glasswork, gold lettering, the works.
He starts, āThis oneās got notes ofāā
āLet me see,ā you interrupt.
The second the bottleās in your hands, you turn and walk away.
He sputters behind you, but you wave him off. āPut it on the billionaireās tab."
You snake through the crowd and confetti, nodding at a few familiar faces but not stopping for any. Emergency exit in sight, you take a seat where you can watch the chaos unfold while staying out of it.
"Pass the bottle."
You don't even bother looking at him as you respond, "Go steal your own."
"You took the most expensive one."
"Get another one."
"This is easier."
"Go fuck yourself."
"Real festive of you."
Still, despite your best efforts, heās already taking a seat, uninvited.
You take another swig before passing the bottle to him without another word.
He glances at you. "Why are you here?"
"Well, it was quiet before someone showed up."
"Must'a really pissed you off," he says, tipping the bottle back.
God, Bucky was fucking annoying. But his cheeks are flushed pink and his sleeves are rolled up to his elbow.
"Why are you here?" you scowl.
"It's quiet," he replies, like just knows it'll make you mad. He's right.
"Youāre in my space.ā
āThis isnāt your space.ā
āI was here first.ā
āCongrats. Want a medal?ā
"Leave."
"No," he states, resolutely.
Buckyās the human equivalent of a rock in your shoeāpersistent, irritating, and impossible to ignore.
You feel face warm with irritation. "Where's your date gone?"
"Nat set me up, I've never met her before," he says, as though itās the least surprising thing in the world. "Haven't seen her in thirty minutes."
"What, you couldn't brood your way into her pants?"
He gives you a dry, unimpressed look. "I don't kiss and tell."
"Doesn't look like you're doing any kissing at all," you scoff.
He tips the bottle back, takes a slow drink, then hands it to you. "You think about me kissing a lot?"
"I don't think about you."
He snorts, low and humorless, and you hate that it makes you want to laugh.
Bucky's fucking annoying. He's run his hand too many times through his hair, and thereās a smudge of somethingālipstick, maybeāon his collar, and he's stretched out too damn much, like he's right at home.
He sends you a look. It makes you want to hide. You hate the way his eyes linger, like heās waiting for you to flinch.
"Bottle," you demand.
He hands it over silently, crossing his arms over his chest, staring right ahead.
"How much longer?" he asks, checking his watch.
"You can leave."
"Sure can," he says, but doesnāt move.
"So leave."
"No."
You stare at him. "Find somewhere else to sit."
"No," he replies.
The minutes stretch. The bottle passes back and forth, your irritation simmering every time he exhales, every time he looks at you like heās got something to say but doesnāt.
Bucky was fucking annoying. He smelt like expensive cologne and Tide detergent. His eyes are tired and his voice is scratchy. when he shifts beside you, itās like he takes up more space than anyone has a right
He holds his hand out for the bottle. You give it to him.
"What are you gonna do at midnight?" he asks.
"Finish this bottle."
"What about after?"
"I'll get another one."
Bucky rolls his eyes. āThat all?ā
āWhy do you care?ā
āI donāt.ā You glare at him, but he doesnāt flinch. He never does.
āGood."
His jawās tense, his eyes dark and sharp, and for a second, you think maybe heās as pissed at himself as you are.
Silence falls. Itās not comfortable, but itās not uncomfortable either. Itās just there. Like him.
"Whatāre you gonna do at midnight? Cry into whiskey?ā you ask pointedly.
āI could, but you drank it all." He rolls his eyes.
There's a lot left. You give him the bottle. He takes it without a word, fingers brushing against yours.
Bucky takes a swig. āNo one waiting for you at midnight?"
"Loads," you scoff. "Got a line out the damn door waiting to kiss me."
"Uh huh," be says.
There's silence.
You look at him, only for find him eyeing you.
āNo one waiting for you?ā
You scoff. āWhy, you volunteering?ā
He doesnāt answer right away, just studies you with those sharp, unreadable eyes. āMaybe.ā
"Sure, Barnes, I'll kiss you at midnight," you drag sarcastically.
His face doesn't shift. Your brows furrow.
"Christ, you're bein' serious," you mumble.
He shrugs non committedly. "I could think of worse things to do."
"Wow," you say dryly. "Charming."
"Just sayin'."
With two minutes to go, you find that it's harder to look him in the eye. Your heart stumbles over itself, and you take another drink to cover the sudden heat crawling up your neck.
Either the whiskey was really starting to take hold, or the damn spirit of the damn season was getting to you.
"Look, I wasn't plannin' on asking anyone else," he says.
You raise an eyebrow.
"Do with that what you will," he says, taking a swig.
"What about your date?" you test.
"Don't think she remembers I exist."
You observe him. His shirt is unbuttoned, and his coat jacket lay on his lap. His bowtie also hung precariously from his neck.
Bucky was really fucking annoying. His hair is toussled and his stubble is rough and you're fairly certain his nose is sunburnt. You know this because you've been staring at him every day from the second he stepped foot in the compound, withdrawn and scowling.
It's late and you're tired of a lot of things and you're careless, so you stare too long. He catches you.
"What?" he bites.
"I'm assessing," you say, then add grudgingly, āYou're not... terrible."
Which is a lie. He's beautiful. He's acutely aware of this on some days. Those days are harder for you.
He stares at you. "I can see why there's a line out the door for you."
"Go join them," you say. "I'll finally get some fuckin' quiet."
He exhales a short laugh. "No."
You can hear the crowd shouting numbers, but itās distant, unimportant. Buckyās eyes are on you, steady.
The crowd cheers.
Bucky's really fucking annoying.
But he kisses you like he's liked you all his life. Like he's real tired of waiting. It lingers just long enough to make your stomach flip when you realise he still tastes like whiskey.
When he pulls back, he doesnāt look smug. He doesnāt say anything at all. Just hands you the bottle and leans back like nothing happened.
His cheeks are red. His lips are swollen. He's never looked prettier in his damn life.
āHappy New Year,ā you mutter, staring at the bottle because you canāt look at him.
finding out that actually these allegations have been around for MONTHS and I haven't heard a peep about it until an article comes out that explains the physical and sexual abuse he perpetrated against his victims to the most excruciating detail truly fucking speaks to the sick fascination we have with voyeurism and witnessing abuse and torture. Why did it have to take a Vulture article detailing how he raped multiple women for the news to finally break and convince people. As someone who has only heard of Neil Gaiman passingly from the posts that trended here and there, I am truly so astounded that his massive following here did not deem it necessary to discuss the allegations before it was all laid out before us in horrific detail. I believe the victims and i hope they sue him for all that he is worth, and i furthermore hope that his legacy is so tarnished, that people spit on his books as they pass them in book stores.

āYou want me to what?ā
Bucky dropped his sandwich back onto his plate.
āI was gonna do it but Iām too busy to make every rehearsal.ā
Bucky had been staying in Louisiana for the past month, finally taking a break from going from fight to fight. Sam encouraged him to stay with him at Sarahās place, which Bucky did for a while, but after a couple of weeks, he decided to rent his own place. He was still near to Sam, and was at his house nearly every day, seeing as he was only a fifteen-minute drive away. Bucky just felt like less of a burden this way.Ā
āAnd Iām not busy?ā Bucky countered, staring at Sam from across the kitchen table, where they were taking a quick lunch break before getting back to the boat.
āWellāāĀ
āShut up.ā
āIt would mean so much to AJ. Itās his first dance recital and I think he would be a lot less nervous if someone he knew was on stage with him.ā
āIām not a ballerina, Sam.ā
āYou donāt have to be!ā He quickly uttered, putting down his own sandwich. āThey just need a couple of parent volunteers to step in and play the adults at the beginning of the show.ā
āI havenāt liked dancing since the 40ās. And I donāt know how I feel about being on stage. Would I have to wear a costume?ā
āItās the Nutcracker.ā Sam raised an eyebrow and gave Bucky a judgmental once over. āI donāt think it fits the show to have you dressed like an angsty motorcyclist.ā
āSam, I donāt think I canāā
āUncle Bucky!ā A cheerful voice entered the room as AJ came bounding up to the table.
āHey, kid,ā Bucky smiled, giving the boy a quick fist bump.Ā
āUncle Sam told me you would be a part of my recital!ā
āHe said what now?ā
āWhat?ā AJ asked, oblivious.
āNothing, IāAJ, could you give Uncle Sam and me a second?ā
AJ nodded and skipped back outside into the sun. Bucky glared over at Sam.
āSo maybe I jumped the gun a bitā¦ā
āSamuel.ā
āYou can say no,ā
āYou know I canāt say no now!ā Bucky flung his hands out, exasperated.Ā
āYou can! Youāll just disappoint him. But if thatās what you want to doāā Sam trailed off, taking a bite out of his turkey and provolone.Ā
āThis is manipulation.ā
āIs it working?ā Sam mumbled and swallowed.
Bucky shook his head and stared at his plate. āYou owe me.ā
āBig time! Promise.ā
āI canāt believe Iām doing this,ā Bucky mumbled, planting his face in his palms.
āRehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays,ā Sam got up from the table and grabbed his now empty plate, āyouāre making the kid really happy.ā
āYeah, yeah. To be clear, I am doing this for him. Not you. I donāt give a shit about you.ā He pointed.
āLove you too, Buddy.āĀ
Bucky found himself that very Thursday at the ballet studio, in a small group of parents, as a petite young womanāwell, she looked about 60, but compared to Bucky, she was youngāintroduced herself, a southern accent clear in her cheery tone.
āWelcome parents and volunteers! Most of you already know me, but Iām Ms. Cindy, the head of this program and this yearās Nutcracker! Iād like to start by thanking all of you for taking time out of your busy schedules to be here and support us and your children. Itās you who keep this dance studio up and running, and Iām so grateful for that. Throughout today, youāll each get called to get your measurements taken so we can be sure that the costumes are ready before the performance. And as for roles, weāll figure that out at the end of class. I have to go teach the little ones, but feel free to take a seat and watch the choreography your students have been learning all season!ā
Bucky followed the others, who seemed to already be acquainted with each other, into a small observing room attached to the studio where AJ was practicing. Bucky stuck himself in the back corner and watched AJ through the one-sided mirror for only a couple of minutes when his name was suddenly called.
āJames Barnes?āĀ
Bucky looked up to see a woman standing in the doorway. He ignored the glances that turned his way as he followed the woman out the door.
Did they know who he was? Did they know what he had done? Or maybe they had no idea. Maybe they were judging him for not engaging with them in polite conversation, maybe they thought he was weird for hiding silently in the corner.Ā
Bucky pushed the thoughts out of his head as the (attractive, he might add,) woman opened the door for him into a new room. It wasnāt huge, but it wasnāt a closet either, and Bucky immediately noted the lines of clothing racks stuffed with colorful dresses that lined the walls.
āI just need to get your measurements quickly for your costume. I can take them now, or if youāre more comfortable, I can send you a list of measurements I need and you can get those numbers to me on Thursday if youād prefer.āĀ
Bucky thought for a moment. He wasnāt entirely sure how to take his own measurements, and he sure as hell did not want Sam of all people helping him. On the other hand, having a stranger so close to him sounds embarrassing and stressful. But he saw the kindness in her eyes, and oddly enough, he felt he could trust her.
āNow is fine."
āSounds good.ā She gave the sweetest smile he had ever seen and told him where to stand. He took off his jacket with ease, feeling somewhat comfortable knowing he had a long-sleeved shirt under to hide his metal arm. He kept his leather gloves on, and she said nothing.
She demonstrated to him how to hold his arm, and he obeyed, holding his right arm out and bent at the elbow. She chatted as she brought the tape measure along his arm. āWhich kid is yours?ā
āOh, none of them.āĀ
He noticed the subtle tilt of her head.
āI mean, Iām not a dad, but Iām AJās uncle. Well, a friend of his uncle but,ā
Luckily, she stopped his ramble before he could truly embarrass himself.
āOh, youāre Bucky?ā She dropped the tape to her side and smiled. āIāve met Sam a couple times, but Iāve heard all about you and him from Sarah.ā
āOh? All good things I hope?āĀ
He asked in a lighthearted tone, but in reality, he was terrified of the things sheād heard about him.
āOnly good things.ā She grinned and grabbed the pencil behind her ear to scribble a number on a chart.
āThatās a relief.ā His eyes scanned the room, trying to think up conversation to fill the silence. āSo are you a parent volunteer?ā
āNot a parent, no. I used to be a part of this program growing up. Itās done so much for me, and I wanted to stay connected, so I help out here and there when I can. I mostly fit the costumes.ā
āThatās cool.āĀ
Cool. Cool. Cool response Bucky. Ask her a question, dammit.
āDo you still dance?ā
āNot anymore. Can you put both arms out to the side please?ā She asked, and Bucky lifted his arms so she could measure his chest. She continued to make conversation as she wrapped the tape around him. āAJ is a great student. He has a lot of potential, he just needs to find his confidence. And heās a great kid. Youāre a lucky uncle.ā
āI am,ā Bucky responded, trying desperately to not freak out at how close she was to him, and how she was only going lower, as she moved to his waist.
She took a break to write down a couple more numbers and returned to him.
āNow I need a hip measurement, so I have to measure around your butt. Is that okay?ā
Bucky gave a convincing nod. āDo what you gotta do.ā
āDo what you gotta doā? What the hell am I saying?
He avoided looking at her and held his breath as she brought the tape around his hips.
āJust a couple more measurements and youāll be out of here,ā she assured, dropping the tape from his hips. āYou can put your arms down now.ā
Bucky let his arms rest at his sides.
She quickly went about measuring his legs and finished a couple of minutes later.
āYouāre all good to go, Mr. Barnes, thank you!āĀ
āYou can call me Bucky,ā he tried to hide his bashful smile and started to exit out the door, but stopped and turned at the last moment. āWhat was your name again?ā
āOh, Iām Y/N.āĀ
āIt was nice to meet you, Y/N.āĀ
He liked the way it felt on his tongue. With that, he said goodbye and returned to the observing room.
Thirty minutes later class was nearly over. All that was left on the agenda for the day was to form the groups.
āSo it seems we have an odd numberā¦Lois, is this everyone?ā Ms. Cindy asked, looking over to her assistant.
āEveryone that signed up, yes.ā Lois, a shorter girl with an auburn bob, tapped on a clipboard.
āLetās just see how this goes. Mr. and Mrs. Tudor will be group one, Mr. and Mrs. Malone will be group two, Mrs. and Mrs. Cardoza will be group three, and that leaves Mr. Barnesā¦ā
āWe could have him be a single parent to his group?ā Lois offered, looking up from her list.
āWe could, but then who would he dance with at the party scene?ā
Bucky swore he saw a literal lightbulb light up above Ms. Cindyās head as her gaze fixated somewhere in the back of the room where you were simply passing by.
āOh, Y/N? Dear?ā She called in a uniquely falsetto voice.
āYes, Ms. Cindy?ā Y/N answered, pausing.
āI realize youāre already doing our costumes, but would you be interested in volunteering as one of the parents? We are short a person.ā
āOh, umā¦ā
āYou can think about it Dear. Itās no trouble if you feel that itāll take up too much time, we appreciate you for your dedication to the costumes.ā Ms. Cindy was careful to add.
Despite her initial hesitance, Y/N spoke up.
āI can do it.ā
āAre you sure?ā Ms. Cindy blinked, surprised by the answer.
āYeah,ā she breathed, āyes. Iāve already got measurements, all I need to do is submit an order. And I canāt tailor anything anyways until the shipment comes in.ā
āA round of applause for our beautiful and dedicated Y/N, everyone!ā Ms. Cindy cheered and began clapping her hands in a circle. The parents all joined in, and Bucky gave a quiet few claps. āThat means Mr. Barnes and Y/N will play the fourth couple. Splendid!ā
Lois tapped Ms. Cindy on the shoulder and pointed to her watch. Time was almost up. Ms. Cindy was fast to get back to business.
āNow letās quickly assign each group their children, and then we can end rehearsal.ā
āBuck, Iāve got some good news.ā Samās voice flowed through Buckyās phone.
It was Tuesday morning, and Bucky had been up and dressed since seven in the morning, eager to pick AJ up, even though class wasnāt until 5 p.m. He was currently lying on the couch, watching the clock tick by.
āWhat, you finally learned to use the potty like a big boy?ā Bucky mocked.
āIt was one time. ONE. TIME. You know I donāt fuck with clowns!ā
āI donāt like clowns either, but you donāt see me shitting myself at the Halloween Festival.ā Bucky quietly chuckled.
āFirst of all, I didnāt āshitā myself. I peed. A little. And second of all, I had a lot of hot chocolate beforehand, and my bladder was at max capacity, andāwhy the hell am I explaining this to you?ā
āBecause you know Iām never going to let you live it down.ā
āMoving on,ā Sam sighed, āI was calling to tell you that you donāt need to be in the performance with AJ anymore.ā
Bucky shot up from his lying position. āWhat do you mean?ā
āMy schedule freed up a bunch so I can take AJ and be in the show now.ā
āOh.ā
Bucky slumped back onto the cushions, dejection dripping from his voice. Sam clearly picked up on it.
āWhat do you mean, āOhā? I thought this was good news for you. I know I forced it onto you and all, and your thing isnāt really being on stage in front of a bunch of people.ā
Bucky picked at the edges of his fingers, carefully considering his next words.
āI mean itās not my thing, butāI donāt know, I feel like Iāve committed. And I get to spend some time with AJ, yāknow? And, truth be told, itās not all bad.ā
There was a pause on the line before Samās voice rang through.
āThatās awfully sweet Buck. And very out of character for you.ā
āShut the fuck up, I can be nice.ā
āYes, of course. Bucky Barnes, the worldās famous sweetheart, how could I forget?ā
āIām hanging up now,ā Bucky warned.
āBye, metal man.ā
āFuck off bird brain.ā Bucky was about to hang up, but quickly added in a serious tone, āIāll be there this afternoon to pick AJ up.ā
āYouāre a good man.ā
āWhatever.ā
āWelcome back everybody!ā Ms. Cindyās high voice rang. āWe are going to practice the beginning of the show where the families enter the party. Weāll take it group by group, so letās start with group one, the Tudors. Your family is super excited for this party, so weāll have you enter stage right and I need the children to be skipping and bubbly.ā
Ms. Cindy instructed the groups one by one. Eventually, she got to Buckyās group, which he shared with you and four kids, including AJ.
āAnd our final group, group four, is the family that does not want to attend. The parents should be trying to get the kids to smile, and at least act like they are happy to be there.ā
Bucky let you take the lead and simply followed what you did. He walked beside you, stopped when you stopped, turned when you turned.
āGood, now make it look like you are trying to get the kids to smile.ā
Bucky copied the way you pointed to your cheery smile and did his best to ignore the embarrassment bubbling in his chest.Ā
The comically grumpyāand much better actors than himākids sighed and plastered on cheery expressions.Ā
āGood, and you can continue walking.ā Ms. Cindy ordered.
Group four finished the short trek across the stage successfully. For such a simple task, Bucky had felt surprisingly nervous.Ā
Ms. Cindy quickly gave her praise and ordered everyone to start over. As Bucky and his group were going back to the line, she offered some advice.
āY/N and Mr. Barnes, could you try holding hands? You donāt look as ācoupleyā as everyone else.ā
Bucky gulped. Of course you donāt look as ācoupleyā as everyone else, all the other couples are actually couples, and married for Godās sake!
You, on the other hand, simply said āOkay.ā
āGroup one, go,ā Ms. Cindy called, and the Tudors began to cross the makeshift stage.
The line moved forward, and Bucky with it. He began to sweat a little.Ā
Hold your hand? With my left hand? My metal hand?
She simply glanced at him and gave him a small smile.
āAnd group two,ā Ms. Cindy called.
Everyone stepped forward.
The good news is that Bucky was wearing his gloves, but surely sheād notice his hand felt different and think he was weird. Although, did she already know about his arm situation? She did mention that sheād heard about him and Sam from Sarah. Maybe she already knew, and wouldnāt care?
āGroup three!ā
Bucky looked back at the kids trailing behind him and spotted AJ beaming right back at him. Suddenly, Bucky felt ridiculous.Ā
Bucky, youāre being an idiot. Be a man and hold her hand. Itās not that deep. Youāre doing this for AJ.
āAnd four,ā
He grabbed her hand and started to walk with her. The first thing he noticed was how small her hand felt in his. It gave him an unfamiliar tingly feeling in his chest. He wasnāt sure he liked it, but it was better than anxiety.
He tried his best to puff out his chest and mimic her confidence as they walked. Bucky stopped halfway through, like they were supposed to, and turned to face the kids like last time. He pretended to point to his smile and finished the walk across the stage.
āExcellent! Letās move on.ā
Bucky managed to make it through the entire class without sweating his clothes off from nerves.Ā
āYou ready to go, AJ?āĀ
AJ yelped, āWait! I want you to meet one of my friends!ā He dramatically waved over to a little girl with a sunflower barrette in her hair who came skipping over. āThis is Ava.ā
āHi, Ava.ā Bucky gave an awkward smile.
The little girl looked up at him unphased.Ā
āHi, Mr. Bucky. So are you really a superhero?ā
Straight to the point, huh? āOhāum,ā
āHe is!ā AJ butted in, āHeās friends with my Uncle Sam, they save the world all the time!ā
Ava crossed her arms across her chest and jutted a leg out.
āSo can you fly?ā She squinted.
āNope, I canāt fly.ā Bucky began to rub the back of his neck.
āCanāt your Uncle Sam fly?ā She asked, looking at AJ with skepticism.
āYep!ā
āSo if you canāt fly, what can you do?ā
Before Bucky could even begin to stutter, Y/N appeared.
āHey, Ava! I think your mom is looking for you.ā She said, placing a hand on the girl's shoulder.
āOkay, I gotta go. Bye AJ,ā Ava quickly spouted and ran off towards the doors.
āBye!ā AJ shouted.
Bucky noticed Y/N holding his blue cap out to him.
āI think you forgot your hat.ā She spoke softly.Ā
āDidnāt even realize, thanks.ā
āItās no problem, Bucky.ā
Bucky was about to give a lopsided grin when AJ interjected,
āOnly friends and family call him that.ā
āOh, Iām sorry! James, then.ā She brought her hand to her cheek.
āNo, no, Bucky is fine,ā Bucky quickly corrected, āyou can call me Bucky.ā
āYouāre sure? I donāt mean to overstep,ā
āYou arenāt, I like it when you call me Bucky.āĀ
He instantly felt his cheeks get warm at his confession. Before she could respond, he quickly changed the subject.
āOh, by the way, I wanted to let you know that I canāt be here at the next rehearsal. AJ will be here, but I completely forgot that Iāve got an appointment that day.ā A monthly check-in with Dr. Raynor that he forgot to move. āI donāt know if you want me to meet somewhere instead, or I can just come early on Tuesday and you can catch me up to speed orā¦I mean whatever you think is best.ā
āIf you want, we can meet on Friday at my place. I can send you the address if youād like?ā
āYeah, yes, sure, let me get my phoneāā he fumbled while grabbing it out of his pocket, āwhatās your number?ā
āHey, come on in!ā Y/N appeared behind the crisp white door of a cute house, not unlike the Wilsonās, and gestured inside before grimacing. āSorry, I shouldāve asked before, are you cool with dogs?ā
Bucky nodded.
She gave a sigh of relief and fully opened the door. Bucky couldnāt help but smile at the graying corgi staring back at him.
āThis is Frank,ā Y/N said, bending down to bring the panting dog into her arms.
āHi, Frank.ā Bucky greeted, giving the dog gentle pets with his right hand. āYour house is lovely,ā he added after catching a glance around.
āOh, thanks!ā She smiled, walking into the living room area to set the dog down on the couch. āThis is actually my parentās house, Iām just house and dog sitting for the week while theyāre out of town. Usually, I live in my apartment.ā
āIs this where you grew up?ā Bucky asked, eyes searching the place. He noted the multitude of picture frames lining the wall and the slightly worn couch.
āThe first eighteen years of my life. I told myself Iād be out of Louisiana by the time I went to college, but clearly that didnāt happen.āĀ
āWhere did you want to go?ā
āNew York, San Francisco, I donāt know, maybe even Australia or France.ā she laughed at the absurdity and sighed. āCāest la vie,āĀ
Bucky stuck his thumbs in his pockets and stared down at his feet, unsure of what to do next.
āCan I get you anything? Water? Iced Tea? I can make some coffee. Are you hungry?ā
āJust water is fine,ā
āSure, one second.ā
Bucky took the opportunity to explore the room. His curiosity was set on the shelf beside the fireplace, and the multitude of shiny awards it adorned.Ā
Several faux gold figures of ballerinas and a plaque filled the space, as well as what looked to be a photo album. Bucky thought better than to touch it, however, he did notice the significant lack of dust on it compared to the trophies.Ā
āI see the obnoxious shrine of my dancing days has caught your attention.ā
Bucky spun around, cheeks a little pink at the notion of being caught wandering. He was looking for the right thing to say as you took a seat on the couch and placed the water on the coasters.
āLooks like youāre an amazing dancer.ā He nodded, hoping that it was the appropriate thing to say.
She ducked her head at the compliment. āI was okay.ā She pointed to just beyond his shoulder at the photo album. āYou can look at it if you want,ā she offered, clearly sensing his curiosity.
Bucky grabbed the binder from its spot on the shelf and took a seat next to her. He slowly opened the book to the first page.Ā
There you were, 4 years old in a bright pink tutu, beaming at the camera. The page was covered in cute stickers and artistic swirls.Ā
āMy mom has a knack for crafty things,ā she said, vaguely gesturing to the book.
Bucky hummed and began to gingerly flip through the pages. It was odd but endearing seeing you change through each photo and page, but one thing that stayed constant was your eyes. In every photo they had the same sparkle, the same light. It looked so right on you, but he didnāt recognize it in you now.
Bucky stopped on the page dedicated to age 17 and marveled at the costume you were wearing. He couldnāt look away from the intricate feathers and sequins.
āThat was for our Spring production of Swan Lake.ā
Bucky turned to see a subtle smile on her lips. She was looking at the book, but it seemed as if she was seeing right through it.
āYou were the swan?ā
āOdette, yeah.ā
Bucky turned the page once more, except this time there was no photoājust the outline of where one would be on a mostly blank page, minus the glittering bold number ā18ā.
āAnyway, the choreography,ā she quickly chimed, her attitude dramatically changing, āIāve got the video right here, we can watch it first.ā
She snatched the album up and placed it back on the shelf before handing him her phone. Bucky watched the thirty-second clip of two of the volunteersāpossibly the Tudors if he remembered correctlyāas they danced a shockingly simple routine.
āThatās it?ā He cocked an eyebrow.Ā
āThatās it.ā She assured. āReady to try it?ā
āI might be a little rusty, itās been a while since Iāve danced.ā
She turned on the music and started counting under her breath.
They started by facing each other, their right palms in front of them, and placed against each other. They both took a step in, a step out and circled around the other to which they were now in the opposite places. She curtsied, he bowed, and then they repeated the step in, step out, switch. Now they stood next to each other, and she held her arm out over his. They took three steps forward, and the music grew into a faster tempo.
āEasy enough?ā Y/N asked, grabbing her phone to stop the music.
It was suspiciously simple, Bucky thought, but then again, the adults were just a small addition to the show. Itās really about the kids.
āWe can make this more interesting.ā He remarked.
āWhat do you mean?ā
āLetās try it again.ā Bucky gestured to her phone.
She obliged and restarted the music.
They went through the routine again, all the way to the end at which the music began to speed up. As Y/N went to pause the music again, Bucky grabbed her arm and pulled her in. She gave a surprised gasp, but Bucky wasnāt regretful once he saw the smile on her face. He pulled himself back and began to spin her around and basked in her soft laughs. After pulling her back in again, and dancing around each other, he dipped her. She wrapped her right leg around him in response and he hoped she didnāt notice his smirk transform into a blush.Ā
āAlright Mr. āI might be a little rustyā, someone has moves!āĀ
Bucky helped her up once she removed her leg.Ā
āI used to be better,ā he mumbled.
āNone of that,ā she softly chided, bringing his chin up, āwhere did that confidence just go?ā
Bucky shook his head. āIāll keep practicing, then youāll see,ā he simpered.
Time went on and not a day went by that Bucky didnāt think of you. After weeks of practice, it was finally dress rehearsal. Bucky was surprisingly calm even though they were no longer practicing in a studio, but in the local high schoolās theater, in full costume. You held his hand through itāliterally, for some partsāand Bucky was grateful for it.
It was Friday night, the final rehearsal before the show the next day, and Bucky was just about to drive off when he realized how cold his hand felt against the steering wheel. He cursed himself and ran back inside, luckily finding his leather gloves sitting on a chair in the wings of the stage. Right as he was about to scamper off, he noticed a figure at the very front of center stage. He recognized her immediately, and without a second thought, he approached from the darkness of the sides and into the light of the stage. She had already changed out of her ballgown and was back in black leggings.
āHey.ā He uttered, slowly taking a seat next to her at the end of the stage. He let his legs dangle over the edge.
āHey,ā she gasped, bringing a hand to her heart. āSorry, I thought everyone had left.ā
āI forgot my gloves.āĀ
āSeems like you have a habit of forgetting things,ā she teased.
āOnly when it comes to clothing, apparently.ā
āIs AJ not waiting for you?ā
āNo, he left with a friend. Heās got a sleepover with Marshall tonight.ā
āGotcha.ā
A thoughtful quiet settled over them, but Bucky couldnāt ignore the somberness in her eyes, gazing over the expanse of empty velvet seats.
āCan I ask you something? You donāt have to answer if you donāt want to.ā
āShoot.ā
āWhyād you stop dancing?ā
She was quiet for a minute. Bucky started to think she wasnāt going to answer, but eventually, she whispered,
āI didnāt have much of a choice.ā
She began mindlessly rubbing her knee.
āI tore my ACL my senior year. It was our annual production of The Nutcracker and I was cast as the Sugar Plum Fairy. There was a rumor that some influential talent scouts were going to be attending. So when my knee started hurting I ignored it. I didnāt tell anyone. I worked my ass off and pushed myself harder when I really should have been resting, but I was stupid.ā She gave Bucky a short glance. āOpening night came, and so did my solo. Everything was going fine until I heard a pop. Next thing I know my leg is on fucking fire and Iām hitting the ground.
āI embarrassed myself and our entire company. My knee took longer to heal than it should have because of more poor choices I made. What should have been nine months of healing turned into years. By the time it was safe enough to start dancing again, it was too late. I was too far behind my peers. Even still I sometimes have issues with it.ā
Bucky simply nodded, taking in her words.
āI tell myself Iām over it because it was so long ago. But deep down I know Iām not. Iāve asked my parents to take down all of my stupid awards, at least store them away somewhere, because itās just some sick reminder of what I lost. Actually, the whole reason I started volunteering in the first place is because my mom told me I should. Said it could be good for me. She never said so, but I really think she was hoping that by being surrounded by ballet again, I would feel motivated to begin training again. But itās a pipe dream.ā
She took a deep breath and looked up at the ceiling.
āAll I ever was was a dancer. And a good one. It was the only thing I was good at, besides sewing, but I only learned that after I injured myself. The whole town knew me as the dancer. I guess the problem with having my entire identity wrapped around one thing is that when that thing goes awayā¦well, who are you? Who am I, if not the girl whoās going to be on the stage one day? My entire identity was ripped from me.
āIāve just been wading through life. Time keeps moving and crashing around me, but I havenāt changed. I still donāt know who I am, besides the girl who couldāve been great. And now Iām justāstuck.ā
Her eyes went wide for a second before squeezing them shut as if she had forgotten she wasnāt alone.
āGod, Iām so sorry, you didnāt need to know all of thatāā
āNo, Iāā Bucky stopped her and hesitated to rest his hand on hers. āI can empathize. I hate that you had to go through that. That youāre still going through it. I can understand not knowing who you are anymore.
āA long time ago, I used to be someone else. I used to be charming, independent⦠happy. But after I was drafted my identity was no longer my own. I was a fighter. I belonged to the army. And then I belonged to Hydra. And even after, I belonged to the Avengers, the world, whoever needed me to fight, I was their soldier. But Iām tired.ā At those words, Bucky slumped. āI donāt want to fight anymore. But I have no fucking clue who I am if not a soldier. Iāve been trying to figure that out.ā
āI canāt tell you who you are,ā she whispered after a moment, ābut I can tell you that whoever you are, I like you.āĀ
Bucky blushed.
āI like you too. Itās kind of embarrassing actually,ā
āWhat is?ā
āI didnāt really want to volunteer for this. Sam forced me. And while I love being here for AJ, Iād much rather hang out with him outside the theater where Iām not expected to be looked at on stage. But then I met this pretty costume designerā¦and suddenly it wasnāt so bad.ā
āPretty?ā She asked, tilting her head.
āBeautiful. Absolutely gorgeous.ā He specified.
āWhat a coincidence. I also met the most handsome and charming man recently.ā
āCharming?ā
āHe doesnāt realize how charming he is. I guess thatās part of his charm.ā
āHe sounds great.ā He turned to face her more directly. āJust to be clear, you are talking about me, yes?ā
āYes, you oaf.ā She laughed.
Bucky pursed his lips.
āWould you be willing to let this oaf take you out on a date sometime?ā
āMore than willing.ā
āThatās a relief,ā he sighed, falling back onto the stage. āI figured it was 50/50.ā
She gave him a silly grin and shook her head in amusement.
āYou underestimate yourself, Bucky Barnes.ā
The final performance was perfect. Well, as perfect as it could be with a production of the Nutcracker with dancers ages ranging from 6 to 106. Most importantly, AJ had fun and did a fantastic job. After the show and final bows, Sarah, Sam, and Cass came rushing onto the stage to congratulate AJ (and Bucky of course. Sam made sure to tell him that he was very proud of how brave he was, and Bucky rolled his eyes. He secretly appreciated it, though.) Cass handed one bouquet to his little brother and the other to his uncle, who funny enough lit up in a similar way as his nephew at the gift. But Y/N lit up the most when Sarah handed a third bouquet to her.
āFor keeping Bucky in line, and giving a beautiful performance,ā Sarah clarified.
āYouāre so sweet,ā she beamed, pulling Sarah in for a quick hug. āI have the perfect vase for this.ā
āCan we go get ice cream now?ā AJ jumped.Ā
āLetās get you out of your costume first,ā Sam said and gave a quick wink to Bucky before herding his sister and Nephews backstage. āWeāll see you by the car Buck.ā
Bucky nodded and turned his full attention to Y/N. He felt weirdly high after the performance. āWanna join us for ice cream?ā He asked, placing his hands on her waist.
āGladly.ā She smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck.
I like dancing with you.
A/N: If you've made it this far, tysm for reading!!! I really hope this doesn't suck complete ass, idk what happened š° Im going to go hide in a hole now and question everything
