Something my dear friend said to me that i think fits
what I really like about all these vintage coupleβs portraits is that there is a very certain romatic decorum kept up β certain themes and poses β which, while of course being the mainstream preferred view of couples repeated throughout many studios, are justβ¦ so nice to look at.Β
this staged affection, a mix of theatricality and intimacy, the couple holding still for a couple of moments and now immortalised in a very set sequence of embraces and kisses. there is a charm to it even when I canβt tell whether this was a genuine couple portait or just actors hired by the photographer.
the kiss on the bare shoulder (eyes perfectly averted), the cheek caress, the piano and the violin, the interrupted embrace, the woman tilted back as in a half-stopped danceβ¦
I simply must torment you a bit with these, let us see some of my personal favourites! (part one due to the image limit)
let us start with the kiss on the cheek (eyes averted! oh the pose! these were taken between 1910-1940)
or the nearly opposite energy (how daring!) of the kiss or caress with direct eye contact (1910-1930)
and then the innocent β yet so flirty β classic of the park encounter! (1890-1920)
and then the famed kiss on the bare shoulder β what an idea, what a vibe, such intimacy! (1910-1930)
and oh, I am not done, look at this β the adoration of the woman! look at this expression, this pose, this decorum! (1910-1940)
and then some of my favourites from the more playful or direct category, enjoy (1910-1930):
and, at last (thank you for still being here and witnessing my recent fascination with vintage polish photography) my three absolute favourites outside of any particular categories (1910-1930)
just look at her. just look.
"You can say that [orangutans] are not dependent on social support and approval, and if you admire this in them, that an orang is irredeemably his own person, 'the most poetic of the apes', researcher Lynn Miles told me once in an unguarded moments. What she had in mind was the difference between orangs and chimps in the way they carry on their discourse with the world.
Chimps are much admired for their tool use and for their problem-solving relationship with things as they find them...the orang is, let us say, not so replete with enterprise. Give an orangutan the hexagonal peg and the several shapes of hole, and then hide behind the two-way mirror and watch how he engages with the problem.
And watch and watch and watch--because he does not engage with the problem. He uses the peg to scratch his back, has a look-see at his right wrist, makes a half-hearted and soon abandoned attempt to use his fur as a macramΓ© project, stares dreamily out the window if there is one and at nothing in particular if not, and the sun begins to set. (The sun will also set if you are observing a chimp, but the chimp is more amusing, so you are less likely to mark the moment in your notes. An orang observer has plenty of time to be a student of the vanities of sunset.)
You watch, and the orang dreams...when casually and as if thinking of something else, the orang slips the hexagonal peg into the hexagonal hole. And continues staring off dreamily."

Disney is doing crazy things in the japanese mobile game sphere rn
you may be familiar with disney twisted wonderland, the gacha game in which various disney villains are used as direct inspiration for handsome anime boys. well that game was so successful that disney is trying to do it again but this time they're just animeboyifying whatever
here's mickey, goofy, donald, and chip & dale. yeah they turned mickey & friends into anime boys. they're an idol unit or something. they're technically not anime boy versions of the source characters, they have different names. mickey's guy is "Neo Michel". not michael, michel, like he's french. chip & dale are "Ruska Moncrief" and "Ranka Monk", they have different last names, they're not brothers anymore so that they can be yaoibait instead, anyways this post isn't actually about these guys I'm just setting the stage for the actual humanizations I wanted to show you
They also did monsters inc. And. Well it's obvious from the designs who mike and sully are. but you will also notice. the blonde one on the left. with glasses. monsters inc is kind of famously about just the two guys so they didn't really have a lot of other non-villain characters to take anime boys inspiration from, I guess, so, well,
Yeah it's her. they made an anime boy version of the mean receptionist slug. her name is roz btw, as all of boygachagame twitter has become extremely aware of in the past 3 days as we speculated prior to the release of the full image who tf the third guy was. the anime boy's name is "noah slugger". at this point no parody of the types of things gacha games will make gijinkas of will ever be able to live up to what disney is officially spending their own real money on designing

Hello Ryan I am here to help. So the first step is pretty easy: Three cheeseburgers are worth 18, so each one is worth 6. If these are dollars, that's a steal!
From the second equation we get that cheeseburger plus fries-squared is five. Subtracting cheeseburger, which is six, from both sides, we get that fries-squared is negative-one. Math fans will know that there are two solutions to this; either fries are the "imaginary unit" πΎ or they are its negative, -πΎ. We'll do the rest of the problem with πΎ, keeping in mind that at the end we should also take the complex conjugates as solutions.
Finally, we have that cup to the power of fries, minus cup, equals three. Replacing fries with πΎ, and moving a cup to the other side, we get that cup-to-the-πΎ is equal to cup-plus-three.
Now, the weird part about this is the cup-to-the-i. The problem with this is that complex exponentiation is technically not a thing. That is to say, there is no one function which is mathematically equal to "input-to-the-power-of-πΎ". In fact, there are infinitely many such functions.
Fortunately, due to reasons that take about six pages to explain (trust me I've done it), there is one particular function that many people have agreed is "the most reasonable one". This is not a mathematical notion, but a human preference. Seeing as this question was presumably written by a human, I am comfortable with using this function.
So, what function is this? Well, given a complex number rβ ΞΈ written in polar form (if you don't know what that means don't worry), where -Ο < ΞΈ β€ Ο, then (rβ ΞΈ)^πΎ = e^(-ΞΈ)β ln(r).
Applying this to our problem a value rβ ΞΈ will be a possible solution for cup if e^(-ΞΈ)β ln(r) = rβ ΞΈ + 3. Splitting this into real and imaginary parts, we get two equations: e^(-ΞΈ) cos(ln(r)) = r cos(ΞΈ) + 3 and e^(-ΞΈ) sin(ln(r)) = r sin(ΞΈ). We can graph these equations on Desmos:
The possible values of cup are the intersections between the red, green, and purple. There are infinitely many of these which have an angle of around -Ο/3, and there are two weirdos: One which is a complex number very close to -2.98, and one which is somewhere around -25. The possible values for cup are all of these infinitely many solutions, and also all of their complex conjugates.
They were right, 99% of people can't solve it.
i've actually been working on some formulae to give all possible solutions to complex exponentiation problems recently, so here's my take on this:
let the value of the glass = z, for z β β:
z^(Β±i) = 3+z
let z = rΒ·e^(iΞΈ) for r,ΞΈ β β, -Ο < ΞΈ β€ Ο
β΄ z = rΒ·e^i(ΞΈ+2Οn) for all n β β€
β΄ (rΒ·e^i(ΞΈ+2Οn))^(Β±i) = 3+rΒ·e^i(ΞΈ+2Οn)
distribute powers (apologies for the use of β):
r^(Β±i)Β·e^(β(ΞΈ+2Οn)) = 3+rΒ·e^i(ΞΈ+2Οn)
convert to the same base:
e^i(Β±ln(r))Β·e^(β(ΞΈ+2Οn)) = 3+rΒ·e^i(ΞΈ+2Οn)
split into real and imaginary components:
re: cos(Β±ln(r))Β·e^(β(ΞΈ+2Οn)) = 3+rΒ·cos(ΞΈ)
im: sin(Β±ln(r))Β·e^(β(ΞΈ+2Οn)) = rΒ·sin(ΞΈ)
in effect, all this changes is the restriction on the domain of theta to be between -pi and pi, so you can just ignore that constraint.
affirmations:
- itβs fun to be awake & in an upright position
- consciousness is a gift
- i CAN do this anymore

This isn't even a hate message this is just the funniest possible thing in the universe. I'm losing my shit laughing right now
Trying and failing πππ
I do think part of the reason we don't have standardized clothes sizing is because clothes are. Really complicated. Most of them do actually have more than one aspect of fit. It makes sense that companies resist printing like the dozens of measurements they use to make, say, a pair of jeans. On one level, it's just a lot for a customer to think about and consider. And then on the other...
They don't want people to understand that "the problem" they have is that the jeans aren't made for them. Manufacturers prefer for them to continue buying jeans they don't like and feeling like their body is the problem.
But if you had to list all the measurements, it would quickly get really obvious suddenly how many decisions got made as "these jeans are actually only for people of one body type" and "wait, all the jeans basically are made for this same body type". Which might make more room for competitors to actually make jeans for different body types! Can't be having that!
I just get so upset! People constantly have the same problems with clothes they own and conclude that it's an inherent problem with their body, often incorrectly assuming it has to do with having more fat/muscles even when it's about a completely different measurement. Because nobody fucking knows about crotch length!!! They don't think about it!
Why do they even make apps for ADHD. You want me to use my 24/7 handheld immediate distraction device? To manage my 'gets distracted too easily' disorder? Ooooh we developed the perfect tool for managing your anemia. Its hosted in Dracula's castle. π
Picked up my phone to consult my task list for today and now I'm reblogging this instead, case in point

I've reached the point where cynicism is a major turn-off for me. You're not smarter than idealists, and you're not helping.
Funny that the stereotypical cynic is an idealist who aged out of it. In my experience, the reverse is true. I was an extreme cynic as a teenager and then I noticed how profoundly limiting it was, and also that "cynics are cool and smart" was a message that was being constantly reinforced by corporate media for some reason.
#yes! cynicism reads as very juvenile to me#and yes prev often stemming from teen pain
Yeah, like I see black-pilled people on here and my default reaction isn't "oh, these must be world-weary old warriors who've lost their faith in humanity", it's "these people are in their 20s and need a hobby"
I also think that the present era has proven that authoritarian leaders don't actually want a population of wide-eyed idealists, they want a population of jaded assholes who are convinced that everyone is lying, any resistance is either a scam or doomed to failure, and nothing can ever get better.
