Returning to a previous idea where Sweetheart was an undercover agent who got close to Milo because his father was a rogue cop.

What if, instead, Milo was the one that got close with Sweetheart, a young, naive, ambitious detective with much to prove, to gain an inside source into DUMP? What if he's just been using Sweetheart for intelligence to report back to his father, who he's been protecting being Sweetheart's back, even going so far as to give Sweetheart false leads?

What if, instead, Milo was the one who eventually falls in genuine love with Sweetheart and realises he's been putting them into grave danger and tried to get out with Sweetheart, without telling Sweetheart what has been happening so as to preserve their relationship?

What if it's too late?

What if Milo's father's lackeys come to threaten Milo into staying, and inadvertedly clues Sweetheart in on what was happening? The truth of their and Milo's love?

What if Sweetheart, hurt and angry, leaves Milo, even going so far as to plan to report everything to DUMP? Or worse still, they know they should report him, but they love him too much still, and just resign from duty and plan to move away?

“All I can tell you is… that I… I fell in love with you two years ago. When we got trapped in this place together. And I loved you two years later when I pulled you back in… And I still love you now. And I’m sorry.” Avior sobbed, curling in on himself. He looked up. “Do you believe me?”

The conflicting feelings rolling off of his starlight in waves was practically enough to knock him over.

Avior wasn’t as good at distinguishing emotions as specialized demons and daemons were. They all needed to know the difference between emotions they could feed on, and ones they couldn’t. Avior, as an inchoate, didn’t have that problem. He still knew emotions—their shapes, forms, edges—like a second language he was fluent in, but sometimes it was hard to tell the difference between some. And human emotions were complicated. Basic ones mixed together to form new ones. They could be difficult to discern.

He thought he could feel surprise. Betrayal. Empathetic sorrow. Anger. Confusion. Hurt. And—

Love?

No. No. Love felt like a flower blooming. This was… not even a flower bud, yet. Infatuation, maybe.

His starlight stared at him with wide eyes and a slightly gaping mouth. Tear tracks cut through the smoke stains on their face from descending down to the fourth circle to find him.
