Here you will find posts about storytelling, and words of encouragement to help you keep going with your writing journey, as well as relatable writer posts.

I like to post about nature and animals and books, too.

In the future there might also be some personal posts about what I'm up to, and pictures of animals and nature (especially my pet hamsters, and any pets I might have in the future).

Published Works

I have written an episode for the science fiction Big Finish Audio play (under a different name) 'Burrowed Time', part of The New Adventures Of Bernice Summerfield Volume 5: Buried Memories Boxset.

Current WIPs

I've only very recently returned from a very long health break, and I'm still in recovery at the moment, so updates may be very slow.

I like to keep several projects going at once, focusing on one at a time, and switching to another project on the list whenever I get stuck.

__Project Portals__

The first book in either a standalone or a potential duology. YA Fantasy Novel (with maybe cosmic horror elements?) Also the main characters are kind of magical interdimensional pirates who are on the run from said cosmic horror!?

Stage: Initial ideas.

__Project Spell__

The first book in a potential series. YA Gothic Horror Fantasy Novel.

Stage: Outlining/Starting Draft Zero/Worldbuilding. Beginning and end are worked out. Outlining Begins. Starting to properly plan/write out the worldbuilding for future reference. Zero Draft first chapter complete.

__Project Ocean__

First book in a potential series. YA Gothic/Dystopian Fantasy Novel.

Takes place in the same universe as Project Spell but with different characters in a different setting/time.

Stage: Outlining/Starting Draft Zero/Worldbuilding. Beginning and end are worked out. Worldbuilding is in progress.

__Project Door__

Standalone YA Gothic Horror Fantasy Novel.

Update: I've scrapped and completely rewritten the idea of this one, and combined it with a different idea into something new. Basic premise is still the same, but tweaked a bit to be a bit more...gothic horror with some dreamlike abstractness to it. I'm liking this version better, but it does mean we're starting back from scratch.

Stage: Scrapped and redoing/rethinking from scratch. Initial ideas.

__Project Room__

Standalone YA Fantasy Novel with trilogy potential.

Stage: Scrapped and redoing/rethinking from scratch. Initial ideas stage.

__Short Story Moth__

A Short story based on a confused tiger moth that flew into my parents house this year.

Genre: General, word count >1500

Stage: 2nd Draft - 100% done, moving on to draft 3

__Short Story/Flash fiction Ballroom__

This was a practice flash fiction I made some years ago (for a competition that I never entered) which I plan to rewrite and publish at some point. I think it might work better as a short story or a longer flash fiction, because it was limited to under 300 words and I think as a story concept it was probably too complicated to work that short. So there's some rewriting to be done.

Genre: Gothic horror

Stage: 3rd Draft - 20% done, heavy editing/rewriting in progress.

__Short Story Pet Rock__

Wrote the first draft in one afternoon. Who knows when I'll actually get around to editing it? Will I even publish it? It's an anti-ai horror story about getting a Pet Rock and extreme capitalism, but I worry it might be too on the nose for it to work. Will need beta reading at some point to get some honest opinions on it (probably after my second or third draft).

Genre: Horror, dystopian, satire (? Does it count as dystopian or satire if it's a social commentary on current events, and it's not exaggerating all that much, it's a bit too close to reality for comfort and that's a part of the horror? Again that's one for the beta readers to decide. I'm too involved in the writing to figure out the genre at the moment. But I was aiming for horror when I started the first draft.)

Stage: 1st Draft complete, Taking a break from it before editing.

__Other Short Story Projects__

There are at least two or more ideas floating around that I'm in the early stages of developing beyond a list of just ideas. So I'm noting this here in case one of them becomes a new main short story project.

Genres: Horror, Fantasy

Stage: Initial Ideas and Plotting, Begun First Drafts.

What not many people teach you about life, is that there are a lot of unconventional ways you can experience it, and experience it well.

The important thing is to try again - or to try something different and new, if something doesn't work out for you.

You are not a failure.

You failed at something, and failing at something is an opportunity to go in a different direction and grow, not an end.

I've been seeing a lot of posts lately that tell dropouts "you can always go back!"

And that's not bad! It's true for a lot of people! You CAN go back later! You can apply to university, you can get your GED, you can pursue whatever level of education you want. It's not bad to share that message. If you dropped out and want to go back eventually, there is zero timeline. You can go back at any age, with any life experience. You do not have to graduate by a specific age.

But as someone who dropped out of college over a decade ago, sometimes "you can always go back!" starts to feel a little like an empty platitude. Sometimes it starts to feel grating instead of hopeful. Even when it might technically be true, sometimes it still feels like a hollow sentiment.

I just want to say, to anyone else out there who feels that way, who dropped out and CAN'T go back, potentially EVER, whether it's due to poverty or disability or any other reason:

It's okay to drop out and never go back. It might feel shitty, and you may even feel grief over it. That's real, and painful, and allowed. But you are not lesser. Even if you never go back, you are not a failure or a loser. Academics do not define your worth. You are not stupid. And it is almost certain that the system actually failed YOU.

A couple people have reblogged this with the comment that it's also okay to be totally confident in the decision to drop out, and to not grieve about it at all. And you know what? Yeah! They're right!

I personally still deal with a lot of grief about how my university career ended, but that's just one experience. I know other people with zero regrets, who talk openly about the ways that dropping out literally saved their lives. Life throws nasty curveballs sometimes.

So, to everyone who dropped out, for whatever reason, and however you feel about it: the educational system is a fucking minefield, but academics don't define your worth, and sometimes dropping out is the only option. Rock on.

#Also - good things can come from dropping out #There are so many things I learnt about myself BECAUSE I dropped out #It is very true that when one door closes - another opens.#I would not have become a film/tv extra or discovered I enjoyed acting and growing plants if I hadn't dropped out of uni.#I would not have worked on my creative writing as hard as I did or got PUBLISHED if I hadn't dropped out of uni.#And you know what the irony is? What course I dropped out of? An English Language with Creative Writing degree.#It turned out studying English Language wasn't for me - and as for the Creative Writing - I self taught myself a lot of the syllabus.#Granted over the course of many years - and I still have some knowledge gaps to fill in - but I've been getting there.#I'm not sure an undergraduate Creative Writing course would even have me back now -I might be overqualified at this stage??#But I have not attempted to go through the process of re-applying so tbh I have no idea what level of qualification I'd be at.#The point is at the moment - I'm happy where I am. And yes I grieve what could have been. But in hindsight I am grateful I dropped out.#We're taught that it's a big failing if you drop out of uni. But it can also sometimes be a blessing in disguise.#Failing can be a good thing

Yesterday, in a flash of madness, I wrote an entire short story from start to finish.

-which means that the first draft will probably sit on my computer for about a year or so before I actually get around to editing it. Maybe I won't even publish it, like many of my other works.

But hey. At least the first draft is complete.

Friendly reminder that writing is a skill and it's okay to practise.

There's absolutely no rule that says every piece of writing needs to be perfect or needs to be part of a story or needs to be polished up and posted on the web for all to see.

Assuming that everything you write (or draw or create in any other way) has to be "good enough" to share can really fuck you up. Do it for fun, do it for practice, do it for the feral friends who will love it even when it's shit. It's okay to make complete bullshit sometimes.

Sometimes you'll write something only to go back later and realise it's not complete bullshit, and actually it's worth polishing up into something worth posting. Sometimes it will be complete tosh you want to make sure no one but you ever sees.

Both those outcomes are okay. Both those outcomes are practice.

Skill takes practice.

I am going to add that you don't need to feel obligated to prove your worth as a writer, either. You also can write whatever you like, so long as it isn't harmful to others. Share what you enjoy, or don't. Just don't be a snot to others when they post. It takes courage to share what you create and we should be lifting one another up. Encouragement goes a long way. Use it.

I’d rather my foreshadowing be completely obvious to absolutely every reader I have, to the point where my big reveal is actually no surprise to anyone, than to not foreshadow anything in order to guarantee that my big reveals have maximum shock value

Because the thing is, you ultimately want your readers to notice your foreshadowing in some capacity. Ideally not knowing the plot twist from the first page, of course. But the average reader should be at least subtly influenced in their understanding of the story by the foreshadowing, so that it feels like a logical progression by the time they reach the plot twist

But no foreshadowing for a big twist? All that shock will quickly be replaced with confusion, and immersion is broken. It’s better to make it too obvious than to have it come entirely out of left field

5 Tiny Writing Tips That Aren’t Talked About Enough (but work for me)

These are some lowkey underrated tips I’ve seen floating around writing communities — the kind that don’t get flashy attention but seriously changed how I write.

1. Put “he/she/they” at the start of the sentence less often.

Try switching up your sentence rhythm. Instead of

“She walked to the window,”

try

“The window creaked open under her touch.”

Keeps it fresh and stops the paragraph from sounding like a checklist.

2. Don’t describe everything — describe what matters.

Instead of listing every detail in a room, pick 2–3 objects that say something.

“A half-drunk mug of tea and a knife on the table”

sets a way stronger tone than

“There was a wooden table, two chairs, and a shelf.”

3. Use beats instead of dialogue tags sometimes.

Instead of:

"I'm fine," she said.

Try:

"I'm fine." She wiped her hands on her skirt.

It helps shows emotion, and movement.

4. Write your first draft like no one will ever read it.

No pressure. No perfection. Just vibes. The point of draft one is to exist. Let it be messy and weird — future you will thank you for at least something to edit.

5. When stuck, ask: “What’s the most fun thing that could happen next?”

Not logical. Not realistic. FUN. It doesn’t have to stay — but chasing excitement can blast through writer’s block and give you ideas you actually want to write.
