Athena remembered all of her kids, even the ones that had passed long ago. She made an effort to learn what motivated them, what made them happy, and what they feared. Not once had one slipped through her grasp. But, unfortunately, she didn’t always check up on them frequently enough. Exhibit A: her child was currently clinging to the side of a building in a shiny red and blue getup. The last time she had checked up on Peter, he was just moved from his parent’s home into his aunt and uncle’s. May was a child of Hebe, so she felt comfortable with him in her care. But then everything with the war started and she neglected to check in. Athena was directly saw the consequences with her own eyes.
“Oh, ah, hey Mom.” Peter looked sheepish, even through his mask, and she sighed as she floated 15 stories above the streets of Queens.
“Hello Peter. May I ask why you’re stuck to the side of a building?”
“Um,” he glanced to the side, biting his lip in thought,”it was an accident?”
With a huff, Athena snapped her fingers and they reappeared in a little park not far from his home. She gestured towards a park bench and Peter sat down like a disciplined toddler.
And he did. The stern glare slowly melted away as her son told her of his exploits, the spider bite, the newfound powers, the winged criminal who dropped a building on him-
“I should have taken you to camp long ago.” She paced slowly, Peter looking on in trepidation. “If only I had acted sooner, this whole mess could have been avoided and you could’ve grown up normally.”
“I’m a demigod, I doubt I would’ve had the most normal life anyway.” He nervously grinned, still young but already damaged. She kneeled down, and with the utmost care, took his hand into hers.
“I am sorry, Peter, truly, from the depths of my heart. To have to deal with this alone-”
He piped up, “I had Ned! He’s a child of Hephaestus, he helped-”
“Still, you had to fend off monsters and criminals and fight against superheroes, isolated from me and this stupid war-”
Peter frowned. “What war Mom? Does it have anything to do with the battle that happened a few years back? Aunt May didn’t let go outside, she said it was too dangerous.”
“And I thank her for that.” Athena tugged him into her arms, squeezing him tight. “It’s time for you to receive proper training, before the monsters start to realize your potential.” She held him at arms length, eyeing him critically. “You’ve done well on your own, but I fear what will happen if it stays that way. When summer comes, I’ll send instructions on how to travel to Camp Half-Blood. Please follow them.”
She sighed and stood, stepping back from the bench.
“I must go, before my presence is noticed. Stay safe Peter, I love you.” Her figure flickered as she sadly smiled, and she was gone in an instant.
Peter dropped his head into his hands and groaned. “Gods, what am I gonna tell Aunt May…”
