Murph: On December 11th, the Sabres defeated the Canucks 3-2. It was also the night that the much talked about show Heated Rivalry took a shot at Buffalo. The main character saying Buffalo is terrible and their team sucks too. The Sabres took that personally, maybe, because they just suffered their first loss since that episode, 9-1 since they caught those strays from TV. Shorty: I saw were the pride of Kamloops Hudson Williams, plays Shane Hollander in that show, is going to be on The Tonight Show tomorrow. Dave: Oh that's cool. I watched the series. And a lot of things in question for what's going to happen if they come up with season two.

The Athletic: What made you decide to get a buzz cut?
Demko: I got a buzz cut because some barber messed me up really bad. It was bad, man. That picture will never leak. It was the day before I got engaged, I went to get a haircut and the guy just sewered me. It wasn’t even on-centre, it just wasn’t me at all. I was trying to let it grow out to see if I could salvage it and the more it grew out the worse it got. So I figured I’d start clean.
The Athletic: So you didn’t go team play bald intentionally?
Demko: I was trying to play it off like I wanted to buzz it, but it was more of a necessity than anything.

Saroya Tinker: I play a predominantly white sport. I wanted to kneel there and I talked to my coach about it and I told them that I simply wouldn't play if you wouldn't let me kneel. So I figured, “well, people don't want me here already. I've spent my whole career fighting back. So, I don't care at this point as to what people think of me.” So I made the choice to kneel and then raise my fist the next game.
Gwen Berry: Here we are. We were forced over here. We built this freaking country. We have years and years and centuries of unpaid labour. With no reparations coming forward. And it's just like you still don't want to see us here? You capitalize off our lives, off our trauma, off our culture. But when it comes time for us to stand up for ourselves and say enough is enough, it's a problem. Come on, it doesn't make any sense.
SHUT UP AND PLAY episode 1 is out NOW! Give it a listen and share!!
From NFL's original anthem protester David Meggyesy, to Gwen Berry’s probation and all points in between, Saroya asks outspoken athletes what they’ve gained - and what they’ve lost. Saroya also talks to CEO and part-owner of the Seattle Kraken Tod Leiweke on how the Kraken be proactive rather than reactive, what the future holds for athlete activists and the business of sport.

"Athletes have been standing up for important issues for decades, in some cases by not standing. We'll tell some of those stories from history and we'll look to the future. When we're done, I hope all of us, you, me, our guests, I hope we all have a better view of why athlete activism is so powerful, why some athletes pay an outsized price for taking their views public, and most importantly, where we're headed. This is Shut Up and Play, an inside look at athletes as activists. Remember, this is a podcast for everyone, even if it makes you uncomfortable. In fact, I kind of hope it does."
Hiii Tumblr! It’s been a while. I’m back to share an exciting project I’ve been working on. Extremely grateful that I got to create some illustrations for Saroya Tinker’s new podcast SHUT UP AND PLAY. Each episode of the podcast profiles athletes of today and yesterday with the guts to leverage their visibility and status to stand up for their beliefs - to risk the championship for the ideal.
Follow the podcast on Twitter and subscribe for the first episode dropping July 13th!!!
Mismatch in size
John Scott: You know, I have a theory with Vancouver and correct me if I'm wrong, but I talked to Tyler Myers about this. I've skated with this player in the summer when I played. Is it distracting to play with Brock Boeser because he's so handsome? Does it take you off your game when you're jumping off the bench on the bench and you kind of look away from the play because he's just so hypnotizing with his looks? What's that like to play with somebody who's just so damn handsome?
JT Miller: You know what? I'm harder on him than anybody on the team, so on and off the ice. And I try to tell him ugly as many times as I can. With the young guys these days, the last thing you need is more air in the tires, pumping them up. So I am fully degrading and breaking him down just to keep their level to sea level as much as I possibly can. But no, we all know he's a good-looking cat. That's the only thing I'm going to give him. I'm not going to give him anything more.
John Scott: That's too good. Jealousy is the highest form of flattery, J.T. That's all I say.

Bo Horvat left the game in the third period, adding injury to insult in the 4-0 loss.
It was Pride Night for the Canucks, which they mostly handled well. They set up a partnership with TD Bank to donate funds to QMUNITY, a local LGBTQ organization, and firmly shut down homophobic comments on their social media. The problems only started during the game when the Canucks DJ, Barron S, made some questionable music choices.
Clearly attempting to fit the Pride Night theme, Barron S played several songs that could be termed “gay anthems,” but also played songs like Aerosmith’s “Dude (Looks Like a Lady),” a song that has been used to attack transgender women, and Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl,” which even Perry has admitted is problematic. It almost seemed like Barron S googled LGBTQ-related songs, landed on Wikipedia, and ended her search.
It’s not the first time Barron S has made questionable song choices. Her use of “Chelsea Dagger,” a song famously used as a goal song by the Chicago Blackhawks at the height of their rivalry with the Canucks, was a faux pas, but her song choices during Hockey Talks Night in 2019 were far worse. On a night all about mental health, Barron S queued up “Where is My Mind?” by The Pixies for the ceremonial faceoff.

Our man Cody found that his clip of the amazing J.T. Miller goal was tweeted out by a very popular podcast. Given their connection with the most misogynist sports site out there, he went and had some fun.
When you link to someone else’s clip like this, you have no control over how they present their name, so Cody kept changing his screen name to make a statement about how he felt about how sports should be covered.
