In 1981, TSR released the “Fiend Folio”, a book of monsters created by gamers in Britain. As a companion to the original, 1st edition “Monster Manual”, the Fiend Folio was odd. With a small handful of exceptions (such as the Penanggalan, and other basic undead) the creatures were not drawn from folklore and mythology. As a young gamer, that threw me, a little. In the years since, however, I’ve come to love its quirkiness.

As I’ve said before, plenty of AD&D monsters are easily dropped into a Gamma World game with little or no need to make changes. Here I’ve presented what I consider 10 great examples, all illustrated by Russ Nicholson, who was in my opinion the best of the contributing artists to the book.

He really likes this one dude character I’ve heard affectionately referred to as “Don Bluth’s Boyfriend” for his ever-present appearance and lovingly rotoscoped charm.
