Little Fish

My name is Susan Buroker, an artist living in Smithtown for the past 40 years. A life long resident of Long Island I grew up on the south shore. I have witnessed the change from a farming culture to an industrial economy as agriculture waned and urbanization spread eastward from New York City. My art is informed by studies crossing different disciplines and ideas that range from social issues to ecological imbalances.I have been awarded the 2019, Huntington Arts Council – Long Island Arts Grants, NYSCA, Creative Individual for “Little Fish”. “Little Fish” is an interactive puppet performance showcasing the effects nitrogen pollution has on aquatic life. The story is centered around Millers Pond in Smithtown. The concept for this project, “Little Fish” developed out of witnessing the local pond in my community become impaired by the DEC due to nutrients causing algae/weed growth and low dissolved oxygen. Storm water runoff carries nitrogen from lawn fertilizers and nitrogen from animal waste, causing HAB’s (harmful algae blooms). The low level oxygen inhibits the growth of fish and causes stagnation resulting in fish kills by late summer. Witnessing the dead fish and the pond laden with green algae I imagined if the community knew the affects of nitrogen lawn fertilizer, would there be a difference? I am honored and thrilled to have the support to further this project. The next four months will be quite busy preparing.
