Little Cat Garden

Added a ton of plants into the garden today. I figured it stopped raining so I better "make hay while the sun shines" so to speak. Put the rest of the tomatoes in along with peppers and cucumbers. I made the trellis for the cucumbers myself because I am stingy jerk. Seriously though, I do not want to pay $10 for a stupid trellis. I also covered the strawberries with a net today to discourage my fine feathered friends from eating my bounty. The iris and the catnip loved all the rain. Everything else is just getting ready to pop! My roses and peony should be any day now...

In brighter news, my father (the Master Gardener) has gifted me some new tomatoes and peppers for my garden!  He starts his plants inside from seed around February and now they are a very substantial size. I am very excited to put them in...I just need it to stop raining!  I also need to get some more tomato stakes for them.  I might get a tomato cage for the cucumbers as well....

The weather FINALLY warmed up! We just had a frost last week. Ridiculous. My mother in law graciously gifted me two new raised beds which I’ve added in. So far I’ve put in rainbow chard, kale, green beans (bush variety), roma and jetstar tomatoes. The strawberries are also looking great. I have a boatload of flowers I started from seed as well. I still need to put in the cucumbers, zucchini, and peppers.

Catnip started to bloom so I had to cut it back. It's HUGE this year. I love it, the cats love it, and the mosquitos stay faaaar away.

First batch of sprouts (minus the rainbow chard and the strawberries). The portulaca is a miracle of nature. They are only 3 days old in the above photo. I have never seen a seed germinate that quickly! I'm trying my best to keep the cilantro alive but I'm worried I might have fried it a bit. I overplanted Thyme, but this way I can share with friends and and family. Also pictured: catnip, basil, larkspur

Fresh catnip toy I created! My cats love to eat catnip off the plant but not from my hand (weirdos!) Unfortunately they cannot be trusted with a whole plant or else they will destroy it. Now I just prune a few branches off at a time and stick them into half an Easter egg toy that had holes on top. They don’t even realize it's not the real deal!

Maybe I should change this blog name to little derp cat garden?

So my local market had a bag of strawberry shoots for a dollar and change. I picked up a bag because, fyeah, 15 plants for less than 2 dollars?! I just recently put them into the ground today and being the rebel I am, placed them waaaaayyy too close together. In reality, I am just an idiot who didn't read all the instructions. I figure I will just let nature do its survival of the fittest thing and only the Dovahkiin of strawberries will survive. Hopefully they grow or something magical!

Is cilantro supposed to be this floppy?

Apparently the catnip plant is her personal salad bar.

Thank you!  I'm actually just about to get started re-upping this blog as spring is (very slowly) starting to sprout here in New England!  I can't wait for it to warm up so I can get out there in the dirt and watch everything grow!!!

I also thought you could just spray insecticide on, but I keep reading that you need to wait to see the bugs first for it to work? I have no idea what I'm doing...help please!
