okay LAST post about this i promise (tho i can promise no such thing) but it might sound like i am being extremely hyperbolic when i say that the terminally online desire to punish people over mistakes they made in the past or opinions they might have once held but moved on from is a kind of thinking that bleeds into the real world and the real prison system and capital punishment etc etc but i am being so serious actually i have never been more serious. carceral thinking is more than just about the justice system, it is something that you learn extremely young ("only Bad people go to prison" "prison is a punishment for people who deserve it") and then carry with you for as long as you live if you dont question it
anyone who has committed a transgression becomes "bad," must be ousted from their community without given chance for understanding, empathy, growth. that is their punishment for being bad: they must be removed. and when you look at the world through that sort of lens, its no longer about the prison industrial complex, its about how you see and treat the human beings around you. its how you isolate people and prioritize someone getting their comeuppance, getting "what they deserve," over a genuine desire for rehabilitation and education
i neeeeeed people to understand this and know that once you do it has to change your entire framework around what this behavior actually means for the way society as a whole treats people. you are not immune to carceral brainwashing just because you put things like "acab" or "abolish prisons" in your twitter bio. it has to start from the ground up
