Pencil Drawn Geometric Gifs by Benjamin Zimmermann

German artist Benjamin Zimmerman (Konkretegifs) has added a new twist to the world of geometric gifs: Drawn by pencil or marker on paper. He created the animations in Blender, prints out the frames, and re-traces them, giving his loops a live and obviously hand drawn look. Geometric gifs are evolving in interesting ways. I am still looking for the first claymation geometric gif. If you have seen one. send me a note ;)

I dare to say this is a very odd time of my life journey.. All my life I have been preparing for this moment, for the moment of getting my degree. That is done now, what am I to do ? I find myself wanting to follow so many different paths , art, pole, dancing etc.

I just watched ‘The Idiot’ by Dostoyevsky and perhaps because of this I am feeling emotional. Perhaps it is because I stumbled upon my mothers wedding album by mistake looking for a book and was caught me by surprise.

What I know is that I am going through a period which I am changing and developing as a person. I find myself oddly patient, oddly mature at times now. I have even surprised myself. I am at a point in my life where I do not know what to expect from myself but I know that I am on a path which I have not chosen, yet, I agree with it.

Something deep down in my soul told me to cry and in the beginning I was unsure of the reason and then I understood, I am scared of taking the next step in my life. I am scared of the changes the future brings and without my permission forces upon me. Where will I be this time next year? Where will my family be? How does all of this influence my art? How can I create art when all of the ideologies I once had, just a few weeks ago, seem not so sure anymore.

And with this thought crossing my head I realized how alone, how truly alone I am. All of my childlike hopes and dreams obliterated by one thought, by one moment of understanding. Everything now will change and I have two choices. One, live in denial and try to fight the change which will just make me end up tired and more disappointed than ever. Or, I can accept it, embrace it and change with the changes..

Individuality and Conformity

Conformity and Individuality. People see conformity, at least to an extent, as something bad, as something to be avoided. When growing up i remember people telling me “If they told you to jump off a cliff would you do that ?!” . When I was older I realized that even though they had good intentions the did not realize them selves that they also conformed. Everyone conforms in one way or another and it is a necessity to exist so the “individual” exists.

Even though I have concluded to this I still can see how conforming is harmful. In society’s quest for peace and order, sexism, racism and general bullying was born. “Don’t swear your a woman!” “Immigrants are criminals!THEY are the problem!” “ Look at him! He is a whale!”

Heading into April everyone has began feeling the pressure for the Degree Show.. Everyone from us the students to the tutors and the head of Fine art is tense, agitated and stressed. I thought that I have done a lot of work since September but today when I went to my studio space, I looked around and realised that I havent done anything worth while! Then as I desperately searched through the piles and piles of paper for one final piece I realised that I have been tricking myself into believing I have done the work I was supposed to do. My project, conformity and sexism … im not even sure what the title, my OWN title means! I dont know where I stand on this subject and what my point is and then I wonder why it is so hard for me to make final images. I cannot write a story if I first dont decide on the story!

Conformity and Stereotypes… some people see the connection while others don’t. I have been doing a lot of research and thinking about these subjects lately and my point of view has started to change. Conformity is necessary . Individuality cannot exist without conformity . The world exists because of “contrast” , because of opposites. One cannot exist without the other, life without death, happiness without sadness, love without hate etc.

Another thing I have been thinking abouy this weekend is those people that really try to escape conformity but end up being a stereotype. A woman falling for words, a man giving false impressions etc. This classic game between a man and a woman. It has happened million of times and it will happen another million times. And even though those people know what they are getting into and they dont want to , they will still do it. This to me, seems like a form of conformity. Because they are use to this, because they know it even though they dont want it they will go through somethig just because it seems normal in a way even though it is “bad”. Perhaps it is late and I am not thinking straight, perhaps I am not good at expressing myself but hopefully what I write is comprehensible enough

My Practice

In Conformity individuality does not exist. Conformity sells a false sense of importance and individuality. To be able to conform society uses different means like sexism. Our behavior must be according to “terms and conditions”. Women be woMEN and Men be MEN! Even our se defines us and control us.

What makes us us, is an illusion that the word "individual" gives us. We believe in this word, we protect this word. We are living a life that is the equivalent of another copy of a cheap book, the colour might be different but it still is the same book !

Words With Strangers p.1

One day, on the 12th of November 2014, myself and my friends Anna and Roussa went for a coffee. Since it was my birthday we wetn to one of my favorite places in Aberdeen the 'Food Story'.

There is a table there, a very nice table, right next to a big window with seats right next to it. The table looks vintage in its style and very old. There are ware and tears all around it, which just adds to its beauty and fascination.

Words With Strangers

I small project I am working on while working on my one about Conformity and Sexism. Words With Strangers is a small idea , that my friend Roussa and I thought of and I am continuing. We went to a small cafe in Aberdeen and put little notes in the drawers of one of the table in hopes to get responses. As a good surprise we got a lot of responses and waiting for more hopefully . Now I am gathering the notes and trying to create a piece inspired by this or even use the notes for the piece.

In the following weeks I will post little paragraphs about this project in a form of a story so stay tuned !
