Do you think Kattigan learned Spare The Dying during the rebellion? Perhaps he learned it from Marienna or somehow after the Marienna and Esme incident?
Regardless, it's heartbreaking he couldn't use it on the people that really mattered to him: Marienna, Esme, Thjazi, and now Teor. The fact (cmiiw) that he kept trying to use the spell on Teor and even wanted to spit on him after learning about Shadow Thjazi, but didn't want to split up the Pridesire siblings after they just reunited.
Kattigan holds so much resentment and feelings of failure towards himself, calls his spells "meager" and such...
