Ahh, so it was a matter of pride, huh? That was interesting, to say the least. What kind of lifestyle would she be insulted for, anyways? Being homeless didnât seem like that much of a lifestyle anyways, more like a lack of lifestyle. Maybe the ninja meant their life choices? Either way, he shook his head, putting on a sly smile.
âI mean, it wasnât good that you hit them, per se⌠But Iâm plenty sure you taught them a lesson, no?â
Quiet, Jesse gave him a small nod, watching his features carefully for any sudden switch. He wasnât creepy but he was certainly attentive, and perhaps that was why she felt so cornered. But it was hypocritical of her to think such, considering the fact that she gave him practically no choice just awhile ago, so the ninja owed him this--she just wasnât used to constant watch wearing the costume.
While his face gave nothing away, Jesse swore she could hear the gears turning in his head, and that made her work as hard as his curiosity. Donât sweat. Just eat. Her movements were almost rhythmic now: cut, stab, bite.
More questions as expected. Mouth full, she took her time chewing the crepe.
âI, uh...â She licked her lips as hesitance grabbed her. âI was goinâ âbout my day anâ...He just thought I was reeeally weird. I do some...sketchy things sometimes, so...â
She paused,
as if awaiting a scowl.
âListen, it wasnât my shining moment so Iâm sensitive âbout it, alright!?â

Aloysius laced his fingers together, resting his chin on top of them. He observed Jesse closely, noticing the way she walked and interacted with people. Something tipped him off about this kid, as if she was⌠Ahh, nothing to worry about. Whatever it was, it didnât matter, someone elseâs money was used to serve both himself and the Ninja Boy that now took a seat in front of him anyways.
His calm dismissal of her jabbing made her smile with pinched lips, powdered sugar clinging to her dopey face. It was only natural for him to want to skedaddle after a good treat and forget this encounter with the exception of satisfying his âcharitableâ nature. If only she smelled, too--she wanted to see that one awkward, cringing smile that screamed Iâm a good person! Be strong!
But his following, honest words caught her off guard. The man looked out the window and let her arrogance waver.
For a moment, she poked at her food. âAlright, alright. Vous avez raison. Je regrette.âÂ
Jesse prepared a thank you with manageable minimal reluctance, but his voice beat her again and traded reprimand with curiosity--something she handled much more easily. âWell, some spoiled brat,â
âCommented on my...lifestyle anâ my nerve...so my pride made me punchâem anâ maybe he was a pinch stronger than me, I dunno.â Well, the ninja definitely wasnât lying about anything. Rather vague but true. âThis wasnât my first rodeo, though so I know how teâ recuperate.â Jesse took another quick bite.Â
It was the one time where his spoils could be noticed, where he could stride into a place, for once, and not be worried about if he had the exact change to get a chance at something sweet. This was his favorite place in Lumiose to spend his spoils at. Naturally, it was a treat to be savored, the very art of being within the walls of the building being a near sacred thing for the burglar.
A man of great taste, obviously. He was a fashionista and a sweet tooth--the frown that stained his face suited his bourgeois exterior. Upset, of course, but not down the spectrum near disgust. The nod of his head (she swore his hair glimmered in the creperieâs warm lighting) piqued her curiosity, amusement and wonderment cracking a smile onto her boyish face as she swiped his offering.
She stood up immediately, cash gripped tight, but he caught her with a request. Come join me. Jesse eyed him somewhat warily, expression suddenly close to blank as she considered his words.
â...Dâaccord.â She almost sounded bored but her prance back to the counter said otherwise.
Her âdinnerâ graciously paid for, Jesse returned to the manâs table, features wiped clean of the friendliness she afforded to the cashier. Change jingled in her woven pouch when she plopped down in her seat, gaze never leaving the well-to-do stranger even when an employee delivered her crepe. A quick merci then she turned, questioning the man.
âYer not gonâ try to abduct me, are ya?â The Ninja Boy pulled her legs up, perched cross-legged on the chair--a great contrast against the refined man in front of her. âI promise Iâm just gonâ spend more of yer money, so donât put teâ effort in takinâ me.â
She flashed a cheesy grin before grabbing only a fork to cut up the thin pancake. Powdered sugar and Magost jelly, yum.Â

Jesse stomped down the buzzy avenue, her feet threatening (but far from achieving) to smash the tormented cobblestone farther into the earth with anger just as fuel. She glared at whoever glanced at her, glass, class and company logos as the only protection between them and her attitude. Many of these people were startled; the bruising of her left eye was bad enough to make others wince at the sight of it.
Some kidâs fist had branded her face and even her name onto a pink slip. Suspension, her mother had sighed. The walk home felt longer than usual but at least Mom mercifully spared her from a lecture. Again. Jesse had lost that battle, and she wasnât so sure if she was going to win the war. She was tired of it; school sucked Spoink balls and summer was just around the corner. Teasing, beckoning. Trash that uniform--it doesnât suit you.
Her parents warned her again, of confiscating her ninja disguise. The thought of it pressed a grumpy huff from the Ninja Boy, and she âaggressivelyâ tucked loose hair back up into her bucket hat. Leaving the house in a rush, she abandoned her purple scarf in the dryer, certain that her make-shift âdomino maskâ and new accessory would suffice. Fellow Kalosians would surely be proud. With a hmph, Jesse stepped into a creperie in the most civilized manner. Casually stepping into a building with the ninja suit.
New year, new me.
--Jesse, May 2016.
She ordered a Magost crepe, slipping away from the counter, throwing âTheyâre covering it for me,â over her shoulder before she sat at an occupied table. The stranger across from her was alone, busy munching away until the âboyâ cleared her throat.

It had only been a couple of weeks, but it seemed that her popularity had peaked. No, no! Not for being the young Marchioness Lestrange of Lumiose, but for being the âEyeâ of Lumiose. In all of the years spent in her beloved hometown, she hadnât thought to view the city behind those windows in this kind of light â though thankful that she did. And to think it had all started on a day that tricked her into thinking it was like any other prior to it.
Jesse crawled onto the beach towel lain before her, lowering herself to lie on her front. Frogadier croaked, but she ignored her Pokemon and idly traced the joyful Politoed that speckled it. Only an hour had passed since dÎner and her PokeBalls were already sold-out. PokeMart representatives would be impressed with her salesmanship-- and be outrageously jealous of her profit. She didn't deserve it! Those PokeBalls weren't hers to give away in the first place.
But who would suspect a thing? Route 4 was full of naive beginner trainers (loaded with mommy and daddy's gift money) and unmindful old gardners. They couldn't possibly link the Boutique robbery to a sweet little girl's PokeBall stand, err, mat. Pigtails was generous, cultivated and well enough to sell the finest of PokeBalls that she, uh, just so happened to have a fair supply of.
Right.
Think of the money, she'd tell herself after every sale. But the ninja couldn't deny how draining this mundane task was. She couldn't believe that people subjected themselves to this sort of work. Stuff some excitement into your 'busy' lives, she'd scream internally with wild exasperation. Frogadier made another sound, and Jesse slowly turned her head to peer up at him. The frog pointed to his eye, seemingly cognizant of her distress, her need for hope.
Someone special was about to start their shift.
She dressed appropriately for the night, donning her prized disguise. Jesse departed 'headquarters' through her bedroom window and climbed balconies to reach the rooftop, like every other night, but that'd be it. No more ordinary, she decided. She eyed a different fate, a new purpose.
The search didn't take too long with her three partners scouring the city. Her Ninjask returned with a Juice Shoppe flyer-- the Eye was headed for Autumnal Avenue.
Upon arrival, the ninja descended onto the cobblestone. The road was quiet. With Ninjask withdrawn, she heard neither bug or French buzz-- just the faint footsteps of an elusive force. Hype over courage pushed her out of her hiding spot. The ninja emerged from the shadows of an alley and walked towards the praised vigiliante. She didn't want to jump her, didn't want to accidentally make herself an enemy. She calmly approached the hero that had yet to exhibit any awareness of her presence, but there was no telling that that was the case.
"What's on te' menu tonight?" The ninja tested daringly, eyes trained on the back of the Eye's head. "Hey, if yer on yer way to a fight, count me in. I'd be happy to crash a drug deal, too. You ain't gotta do this alone."
The girl couldn't help but grin. She was dying to hear her plans, to pique her interest and gain her approval. Surely she didn't sound too desperate?

âYou know, Lumiose is actually a pretty nice placeâŚI could definitely get used to this. AhhhâŚâ
It was notoriously difficult to please the hopelessly picky Ace Trainer, but the beautiful crown jewel of Kalos defied the impossible and was starting to win over Alexis in a big way. Countless Trainers flocked to the streets each day from all walks of the region, and the blonde found herself never in want of challengers or admirers. Even in the elite dining clubs of Le Wow and Sushi High Roller, Alexis found ways to satiate her cravings for battle (often crushing waiters with her Pokemon while idly enjoying some of the best cuisine that she had ever tasted). By the evening, with her new fans reluctantly leaving her side, Alexis enjoyed a nice break from the dayâs action with pleasant walks down boulevards splattered with vibrant sunset.
Yes, Lumiose was just the right mixture of competition, relaxation, and class for the Ace Trainer. There was definitely evidence as to why the crown jewel of Kalos was ranked among the top tourist destinations in the entire world, but Alexis was about to find out that the city of her dreams also had its ownâŚunique imperfections.
I swear to ArceusâŚif I find you, youâreâŚyouâre going to pay for this!
"Can it, Barbie."
Stifled laughter shook the young ninja (less intensely than the obvious fury rumbling their enemy) but her hand remained steady. The prankster's work wasn't always beautiful, but she sure got the jobs done. And however triumphant, she musn't let the delight distract or delay; probably much to the poor victim's dismay, there was plenty more left up Jesse's sleeve. Frogadier, level-headed and right on course as usual, prodded his trainer's shoulder as if to say get a move on.
"Yeah, yeah. We ain't gonna lose 'er. Just takin' it all in. Don't go off--" Jesse swiftly lowered her arm. "--on me."
Almost immediately the atmosphere oddly shifted from summery to chilly-- spine-chilling was the goal. The showy streetlights flanking the stomping blonde flickered, glow pulsing weakly before they switched off completely one by one down the road. Above, Frogadier followed the pace effortlessly while Jesse was just a little bit behind, still hesitating a second or two before leaping onto the next rooftop. Though, she wasn't discouraged considering how the jumps were starting to feel easier, more fun.
She was getting better at this.
Caught up, the ninja and her Pokemon settled near the edge, the front seat. The street was dark, but contrasting golden locks were easy to pinpoint in the uninviting shadows. Jesse spared the lone girl a quick glance before locking eyes with her Ninjask. The Bug Pokemon, now joined by his elusive twin, Shedinja, was hovering behind the cover of a tree. She gave Ninjask a nod, and the Pokemon backed up. A moment of silence below before a sudden gust tore down the street towards the girl, ripping the calm and flinging leaves and perhaps lifting skirts.
Jesse pursed her lips. "Fro-bro? You wouldn't happen to know Mist, wouldja?" The frog shook his head but inched forward anyway to send out some bubbles.Â
"Doesn't really fit the mood I was goin' for but whatever. Nice one..."
â¤: Fire, I'm sorry we couldn't make it in time to see your parents. - from Jackie from the au thread seeking a friend for the end of the world
Inbox me a ⤠to talk to one of my previous/other characters!
Fire opened his eyes and was somewhat alarmed by the ceiling painting that greeted him in the darkness. Jacqueline couldnât sleep either, huh? He wished to roll onto his side to face her completely, but Pikachu slept soundly on his chest. This surprised him; the Pokemon knew tonight would be everyoneâs last, but he was so at peace. All their partners were.
Well, they did tire themselves out breaking in and playing around the one and only Parfum Palace.
âDonât worry about it, Jackie,â he whispered ever so softly. Heâd be terribly upset with himself if he woke any of the Pokemon scattered about the room. Fire turned his head to afford her a small smile. It was probably about midnight and the regal chamber was so dim, but it wasnât starless. Jacquelineâs eyes were looking back at him, still wide and still full of lifeâ beauty that couldnât be equaled by the luxuries in the abandoned castle.
It was a goddamn shame the universe didnât know what it was erasing.
âThey should be okay; they shouldnât worry either âcause Iâm in good hands,â he sighed. Pikachu shifted, prompting the trainerâs hand to gingerly pet the mouseâs head.
Everything felt so fragile, so delicate.
âThanks for the fun, Jackie. I wish we had found each other sooner.â
