I'm not entirely sure how to phrase it well, but Spoke's utilisation of bonds and friendships is really intriguing to me. It is something that he has always done.
Of course, the very first thing that would pop into anyone's minds is season 4 β "I'm your teammate, we're the No Pants PP", which Parrot contradicts the moment when asked, denying his ties to Spoke as a gauze for an open wound. Parrot said he always thought he was apart of something greater, oblivious to how each moment was apart of a step-by-step guide, an equally binding contract as the book Spoke shoved into his hand as a reminder.
It is mercy, Spoke's supposed fondness, he is the sole saviour, the only way to defeat everyone else who holds only a fraction of his power. The only way Parrot can survive, and has known to survive, and is a factor of his survival, is by virtue of being a friend to Spoke. Someone Spoke looks at with a smile and says, we're friends. But this is not grace, it's restrictment.
β Everything relies on him and Parrot being friends, everything, their close bond only growing closer for a scheme, a grandiose plan. And in a way, Parrot was right to be believe he was apart of something big, it just wasn't the NPPP.
It wasn't this what made me start thinking, though.
It wasn't "I'm doing this for Poggies".
Despite how he recalls it as the first time he had ever learnt to control himself, what it is remembered for is the opposite, but it is what gets Parrot to listen. That finale was unleashed destruction, the moment the wither skulls slip out of his hands, they could not be contained.
"We destroyed everything they loved", said Spoke, reminiscing. Was there nothing on the land, that he himself had littered with his footprints, that he had faught over, and came out glorious, that would make him love anything?
"This one team, had only one weakness, and that weakness was infact me." Says, Spoke. It was repayment for his weakness, how he drags down his "family", the only one holding them back.
"I knew you didn't have it in you, man. You may have done the wither thing, but we all know that was just you playing a character. You weren't going to betray your friends." Said Redd to him, a season later. Watching uselessly as his civilization is blown to shreds, as his plans go up in flames.
"None of this has to be remembered. This can just all end, this can be in the past. And that's exactly what happened in season 2: one thousand withers destroyed all of the bases, destroyed everyone's homes, killed people." Spoke holds his hand out for Zam, patience running out as he awaits her arrival to paradise. "The thing is, that gave us a chance to move onto a better world. And I had to understand this with Poggies, when we all jumped off that cliff, when we all understood it was our time to move on."
It wasn't "I'm doing this for the NPPP".
"I kind of feel bad watching these clips back, because it seemed like Parrot was fully convinced it was real." Spoke muses in his Wormhole video, the real one.
When Parrot recalls this on his podcast, choked up, the first Wormhole video wasn't yet out. The one entirely made up of lies, with gaping holes in the story, built on a foundation of deception. "But then what broke my heart, you ready for this? I'm about to cry on the podcast dude. I was actually likeβ that actually hurt last night bro. You know the team No Pants People Party? Bro created that only to get close to me dude. So that he can manipulate me. Dude Iβ I can't trust anyone next season. I actuallyβ like obviously it's for content and whatever, but bro I thought I was part of something bigger dude."

Rule of thirds, the Empire had nothing to prove, not by then at least.
He sounds... remorseful. When he accidentally kills Mapicc, he does feel bad, it's real even if it's for a split second. Maybe it's not exaggeration at all, all that comes out of his mouth once the first droplets of blood coats the ground, his armour, his mace. Maybe it was a sobering, maybe it was realisation.
"Uhm... guys, Iβ I don't know what to say. Why did I... why did I kill him, bro? Why did I? I'm not like.... I don't like this anymore, bro. This is not what I.... why did I kill Mapicc....? ....I killed Mapicc." It's easier to back away, let the items on the ground fade out of sight. He never once lowers his mace, though. He stands in place, everyone keeping their distance. He repeats the words until it feels right on his tongue.
"I won't kill you either Jepexx. Dude, I'm just trying to bring my teammates back together. Can Minute like, come down from there? I wanna have a team meeting, bro, I don't know what just happened." He begs them to let him see Minute, the word "teammate" not coming out quite right.
This was the vision of the Empire, he was the vision of the Empire. Everything he is, and could be, and has been.
But more importantly, he wants to talk to his friends before he dies. He knows he'll die. He knows he'll die, and he wants it to be Minute. Every good story ends with defeating the big bad evil, you don't save the princess by not killing the dragon.
Minute is in a similiar boat, kind of like Spoke was in season 2, that's what he tells Minute. Maybe it was the fate of becoming like Spoke that scared him off.
It was the Cleansing.
Or rather, what came after the Cleansing. I've talked a lot about it, things that would be added purple prose if I were to dissect that. In short: it meant everything to him.
And it failed. And it didn't fix anything. It was everything to him, and it quickly became nothing. At least, that's what he yells at Zam, staring her in the eye, limbs cobweb-bound. The Cleasing failed, he failed.
Even after the events, he paraded the shield around, the only one he ever wore. The finale, it's what weighs down his arm, it's what Zam last sees him holding. He had more in his enderchest, stolen relics catching dust, doesn't feel anything when the sun shines light on them.
Spoke was showering her with various gifts, showing her different tools with various different enchants and meanings, and slowly her interest in them wavers, despite her initial excitment. The moment that Spoke realised that she no longer wants anything that he has, he pulls out more personal things, things that he knows meant a lot to her: Pangi's shield, the Empire shield, the Cleanser shield.
He asks her to meet on the mountain the Cleansing started, the hill he wants to die on, and does. The reason why Ro is willing to kill him, free him, is because they are friends. It gets to Ro's heart quick, holds onto that for dear life. He stands by Spoke, opposite everyone, because they are friends, rubbing the salt in Zam's wounds.
Zam asks, why did you kill me?
He denies holding the blade piercing her through, denies being the eyewitness of her slaughter, as if it wasn't his eyes peering through the gap in the obsidian. Never eye to eye.
ZAM: I would have been banned because of you.
SPOKE: Clown was the one that hit you, Clown was the one that killed you. I would never do that to a fellow cleanser. [...] Mapicc would go out of his way to kill someone. But I wouldn't hit him, I wouldn't touch him. Because he's a fellow cleanser.
"I thought friendship meant more to you, but I guess not." Vulnerable to stagnancy, her back pressed against the wall. The tiles are stainted by the blood seeping through her clothes. It's hers, undeniably. His has already washed out, back in his veins to mold the person in front of her.
The sword is already slotted in place, to puncture her throat and hit the wall behind. "Zam, friendship does mean to me. And that's why I'm trying to make this new world come."

I think that this arc will end with us realizing that the "villians" were right in the end.
It will make us question what a villain was.
Was Ashswag a villain if we say Spoke was justified? Do we know Ashswag's full story?
Was Lettuce a true villain if we say Parrot had a right? Do we let what happened to Lettuce slide?
Is Saparata the real villain? Do his friends sta
Who is the villain in Wemmbu's story? Flame's? Are they their own villains because they cause so much destruction, death, and indirect pain? Or is it just because it's "who they are"?
In the end of the Null Arc, we will be wondering who was "bad" and who was "good". In my opinion, it's fully hypocritical to say that Spoke lost everything in Purgatory and became what he is now and NOT let what happened to Lettuce influence how he acted.
Lettuce lost it all as well at once point. Multiple, actually. Was his action towards Wemmbu and Flame from pure malice? Or was it the history behind it?
Is Parrot in the wrong? Is him killing Law for the fear of possibility justified?
We will realize the villians of UU were all correct and it will come down to the bare bones of what makes someone good and what makes them bad.
