He’s not on a therapist’s couch, he’s just alone and he’s gotta have this solo rehab in the space of a very short time. It’s a hard thing to dramatize, and the only way to really do it, I think, is to get inside his head and to actually make it very surreal. - The sheer weight of Thorin’s depression is enough to bend the surface of that gold. - He has a sense of realization, and he gets split in half into sort of two Thorins, and he sees the bad Thorin get consumed leaving the good Thorin“.

“So while we have Richard delivering this powerful performance, obviously the sound is providing a lot of the back-up. Because we are showing, you know, very disturbed person who’s gone to some form of madness basically going through rehab in forty-five seconds, and the sound is a big part of selling that hopefully to the audience - is that you’re conducting this sort of monologue, conversation with himself inside his head, and it’s almost like it’s helping him to form some sort of a clarity of what his behavior’s been. He sees himself from the outside and then he literally visually starts to see himself from the outside as well as he stands here watching the sick part of his personality get drown in the gold”.
