But I think I once proposed an AU where the PAKs actually originated from somewhere else, evolved beyond their original creators' control, and started parasitically taking over different alien species until they discovered Irk, decided the Irkens were the ideal hosts, and completely enslaved the entire race. Then they stared breeding them to be unable to survive without them. But they are still born with a brain with it's own consciousness, separate from that of the PAK that gets attached to them at birth, and that brain has no control over the body. Which is pretty close to actual Yeerk lore in the Animorphs books. Although, when I first came up with the idea I was probably taking inspiration from the Borg more than anything else.

I can very much relate to this and all jokes aside, I know the reason why I read more fanfics than original novels is because I’m here for the characters I already know, love, and am passionate about. with original novels, I don’t know who these characters are, I’m not passionate enough about getting to know them. which is the same reason why I don’t read fics with ocs either. which is not to say original novels and ocs are bad. but personally, I’m only here for my comfort fictional men being put in Situations

It doesn’t mean “this is ideal or healthy or even realistic”. It means “this is beautiful, this is tragic, this is grotesque, this stirs emotion”, even if it’s not, as @starryroom puts it, something you would be comfortable seeing play out in front of you at Taco Bell. It’s about grandiosity and mythology and heroism writ large. It’s about playing with the id, as beautiful and terrible as it can be.

For goodness sake, rec the fics. Rec them on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Bluesky, Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, or the reanimated corpse of MySpace. Rec them on Pinterest. Rec them by semaphore, smoke signal, or Morse code. Rec them via a page ripped out of a college-ruled notebook and folded into a tiny triangle and flicked across a classroom while the teacher is looking in the other direction. Heck, rec them on Slack, Teams, email, text, postal mail, or a message scratched with a long stick into snow, sand, or dirt. Just rec the fics.

And I WANT that for everyone. I want people to be allowed to choose what I wouldn't, do what I wouldn't, because then I would be free to do what I want and need.
