I’ve honestly been having such an art style crisis and people don’t comment on my posts when I ask for help with my art style so how did u get urs? 😭😭😭
that is…a very good question!
for the longest time, ive never really felt like i had an art style. i feel like sometimes its harder for the artist to be able to see the art style they have because they spend so much time looking at their own art. one of the things that i feel has helped me in developing my art style is mainly just drawing all the time. i really enjoy consuming other people’s art, so i often take a lot of inspiration from the things i see. do i like the way a certain artist draws their eyes? i’ll try it our and see where it takes me. i notice the way someone picks color and find it cool? imma try it out with my own art and see if i like it. my art style is something that has developed over the years and has been molded by all sorts of things i consume, including media. i find myself making pinterest boards and collecting things i like and wanna try incorporating into my art.
another thing i would say is to experiment with different techniques. whether you’re doing traditional work or digital, finding a style of working that you like makes it a lot easier to just create things and develop a style. i played a lot with brush packs on procreate, from like 2020-2023 my art would constantly look different in terms of technical style, i feel like i still implemented stylistic choices that tied back to my ‘artstyle’ but using different types of brushes, coloring, and shading techniques definitely helped me in finding something i liked to work with. it’s why my style usually consists of sketchy and messily rendered art. try messing around with every aspect of your work, and slowly you find ways to create that just feel more natural.
if you can, ask those around you to pick out certain aspects of your art that sticks out to them. you can try and narrow it down yourself as well, writing down specific things you notice across all your art. it can help you figure out if you want to focus on aspects or steer away and experiment in different directions. i still feel like my art is constantly evolving, i understand the feeling of frustration that can come from trying to create work in a style that you feel suits you, but i can say from experience that what’s helped me the most is simply to just keep drawing, finding inspiration and continuing to create things even if you absolutely despise it at times. there’s time i get so pissed off at my drawings that it makes me wanna stop drawing for like a week, and sometimes i do benefit from that.
i guess to summarize all the nonsense i just wrote, i developed my style by constantly creating art regardless if what i made looked good to me or not, eventually i kinda sorta just developed ways of drawing that i felt suited me, forming a style. i really don’t know if this is going to be helpful to you anon, but it gave me something to think about, so thank you! i wish you luck with your drawing endeavors!
