It's weird to think about how long Undertale has existed by now and how influential it's been on contemporary indie creatives. For example, Gooseworx (Amazing Digital Circus) was originally popular for making Undertale remixes. Joel G (ENA)'s first video uploads are Undertale fan animations. Even the Deltarune guy started off making Undertale stuff

Remember when the entire internet believed that it was entirely the fault of Anish Kapoor that consumers weren't able to purchase an airplane paint that required proper ventilation and a paint booth to use, entirely on the word of a pigment manufacturer who then used the video to advertise his pigments?
Strictly speaking, most (spray) paints require proper ventilation and a paint booth to use. Vantablack's original formulation wasn't even a paint, it was a vapor-deposited crystal that was applied by putting whatever you were coating in a vacuum chamber. Later versions eventually did get into a more paint-like format but still require post-processing in vacuum chambers.
It still isn't sold direct-to-consumer because it's not meant to be "really dark paint" (though BMW did build a concept car coated in it) it's an engineering material designed for precision optics and sensors, and its application is a little more complicated than rattle-canning something flat carbon black.
From Columbia Journal of Law & the Arts, June 3rd, 2025 by Amelia Chen:
The "airplane painting company" was Surrey Nanosystems.
They gave Anish Kapoor exclusive rights to use Vantablack in artwork, which means he paid them a lot of money to write up a contract that the only manufacturer of this type of paint was only going to sell it to Kapoor. A contractual agreement that nobody else is even allowed to attempt to use it.
Nobody had to take Stuart Semple at his word, they could look it up legally. They could ask to also be trained to use Vantablack and rejected by Surrey Nanosystems. It's not that it's a "license to use it" as much as it is "and nobody else can."
If it hadn't been for the 'exclusively' bit, it still would have been restrictive to do, but the attempt to improve the pigment Could have been made.
It also wasn't the first time this happened: Yves Klein did the same with an exclusive blue pigment. There was still outrage in the 1960s when "Klein Blue" was exclusive to Yves's use. (Note: It is VERY blue.)
As far as the art itself, I mean, at least Kapoor puts up warning signs for his installations? Though you know, insurance liabilities need to be viable. But this is how he's using it in his installations. You have to sign a waiver to see it.
A man fell into a hole in an artwork on view at "Anish Kapoor: Works, Thoughts, Experiments" at the Serralves museum in Portugal.
So, Semple went out of his way to call Kapoor out and invented several new acrylic pigments to be petty and included a Kapoor rider. -I promise not to give this to Kapoor-
And then,
instead of letting a sleeping dog lie,
Kapoor heard he wasn't supposed to have a new pigment from Semple. Legally restricted. Y'know, like he did with Vantablack.
So he used his money and wealthy connections and paid a sequence of people to be able to get it.
What did he do with it? Oh, he covered his middle finger in the pigment and posted it online, tagging Semple.
Kapoor got it after Lisson Gallery purchased the pigment from Semple. A tumblrina is cited as having found that out on legit news sites.
Semple then went on to make Black 2.0 and Diamond Dust, both with the Kapoor rider on each sale. Semple is still making pigments. The pigments he makes get good reviews.
So, unless they're somehow secretly friends and all of the sales benefitting Semple were a favor Kapoor did for him, I'm not sure how anyone "was just taking a pigment seller's word" for anything?
Like, that all did happen. It was funny, and petty, and Kapoor participated in the interaction, like what? Did you buy Semple's pigments? Did you feel ripped off?
Like what's the source to be all "oh we were all gullible" about it? Are we supposed to deny reality now?
i realize this is a hack live at the apollo type observation but its really striking how "good customer service" in the us does not mean "providing customers with a good service", but instead "providing customers with a terrible service but forcing the people providing it to act slavishly obsequious at all times"

i know i said i did not want to talk about the nolan odyssey but i do have one more nodyssey post in me. i actually think the idea of odysseus understanding his story as existing both in and out of a historic timeframe is a fun way to handle the liminality caused by the story being part of an extensive oral tradition. however having him say "our age of bronze is collapsing" is perhaps not the way i would have done that
"Shaking my head so everyone knows I disapprove" was meant to be a joke about needless posturing in preemptive defense against a hypothetical bad faith crowd, but I fear it's pmuch now a lifestyle

Story-driven roguelike where you actually resolve the central problem with no contrived shooting-our-own-themes-in-the-foot excuse for why you just keep iterating on it forever after the credits roll, and any runs after that are framed as PTSD dreams about all the shit the protagonist went through.
Just imagine all the fucked up postgame difficulty modifiers you could easily justify in this framing. Nightmare mode mod where all the trash mobs have the face of your dad.

someone sent me anon hate last night over this that was like "hope you enjoy the cruel, empty world you're creating" and i think insisting that art can only exist if intellectual property laws exist is a far dimmer view of the world than anything i could consciously propose
