literally when critics talk about television made for teenagers today and they point out how uncanny the dialogue is like it’s ripped from a twitter thread. it’s because it is. so much media today is made for the express purpose of like becoming a screencap or viral gif or buzzfeed article. none of it is authentic even the most annoyingly woke teens (i was one of them) don’t speak like that in real life. it’s literally designed to appeal to neoliberals whose only understanding of activism is empty symbolism. and when a show or film or novel that isn’t placating us in this way picks up traction people denounce it all together because they don’t want to do any thinking of their own.
