I think one of the reasons why Sailor Moon Crystal disappointed a lot of people was that it was a word for word adaptation of the manga AND when it deviated from the manga and added stuff, it added things no one liked.
Being a straight adaptation of the manga meant it copied the same problems the manga had, like how disposable the villains were and how the supporting cast just straight up disappeared.
Then you had them adding stuff like the crap with the Shitennou being the love interests of the Senshi, and the way Usagi was practically fawned over in the first season. Iβm still pissed about how they changed Jupiterβs introduction and took away her trying to fight the bride monster on her own.
